Unified Heavyweight Champion of the World Anthony Joshua OBE inked a new “career-long” promotional deal that will keep him with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing. The IBF, WBA, WBO and IBO face will put his crowns on the line against former Undisputed Cruiserweight king Oleksandr Usyk at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London this Saturday.

“We’ve built some great foundations over the years and I appreciate Matchroom – the company, the team, the family business,” said Joshua. “That’s kind of what drew me towards you guys as well, the integrity that the Hearns have when it comes to boxing and business.” He added, “I’ve felt comfortable during my years as a boxer and I always felt that the business outside of sport is harder than the actual fighting due to the history and some of the problems that some fighters have had. So, to be with Matchroom Sport has been a blessing for myself, my family and my team.”

PROGRAMMING

 

North American soccer is making history beginning in 2023,announcing that all of the clubs from the top two first division leagues in North America — Major League Soccer and LIGA MX — will compete in a completely reimagined Leagues Cup. The event will serve as an annual, month-long , tournament and both leagues will pause their respective seasons for one month during the summer to compete. “The new Leagues Cup with every club in MLS and LIGA MX competing in an intense, month-long, tournament will establish new standards for what is possible between our two leagues, and further showcase our players and clubs to a global audience,” said MLS Commissioner Don Garber. “Since its launch 3½ years ago, our partnership with LIGA MX has grown quickly and the competition has brought out the best in both of us. On the path to the FIFA World Cup in 2026 hosted by the U.S., Canada and Mexico, this is the perfect moment to produce a tournament that will elevate the profile of Concacaf and showcase the incredible passion our region has for soccer played at the highest level.” 

Football continues to roll for the new season as networks report strong viewership upticks in the opening weeks. ESPN reports that Week 2 of Monday Night Football delivered an average of 13.8 million viewers, ranking as the second most-watched Week 2 MNF game since 2014 and up 13% over 2019 numbers. The all-Manning presentation on ESPN delivered 1.9 million viewers, up 138% over Week 1.

On NBC, Sunday Night Football so far is notching a TAD average of 22.2 million viewers, to deliver the franchise’s best start through Week 2 since 2017 and up 12% from 2020. Football Night in America, meanwhile, is pulling a 7.4 million average on NBC, for the show’s best start since 2018 and up 27% over 2020.

FOX, meanwhile, saw viewership spikes of 7% in Week 2 of the NFL season. The singleheader delivered 18,473,000 viewers, up 7% over last season’s comparable window and ranking as the channel’s most-watched singleheader since 2019. It also scored FOX Digital’s most-streamed Week 2 ever, with an AMA of 565,200 across all properties.

The NFL on CBS maintained its own strong start to the season with its Week 2 viewership on Sunday, averaging 24.291 million viewers in the national 4:25p window, up +28% from Week 2 last season. In fact, the 4:25p game window ranked as CBS’s most-watched national game window in September since 2014. Viewership for the regional 1p game window delivered an average of 14.179 million viewers, up 44% from Week 2 last season.

With all the tallies, the league now reports that season-to-date NFL viewership is averaging 17.7 million viewers across TV and digital platforms, up 14% year over year the highest average through Week 2 since 2016. Share is also up 25% YoY.

In college sports, CBS Sports’ college football Saturday showcase at 3:30p pitting Alabama and Florida scored as the most-watched SEC ON CBS season opener since 2013. The matchup averaged 7.863 million viewers, up 76% vs. last year’s comparable game and scored as the most-watched television program of the day on any network.

In addition, CBS Sports announced its college football Saturday showcase for Oct. 2 at 3:30p, selecting the SEC ON CBS matchup between Alabama and Ole Miss. Brad Nessler, Gary Danielson and reporter Jamie Erdahl will call the action from Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa.

FOX Sports’ own college football numbers are off to the company’s best start ever, bolstered by viewership being up 41% over 2019 levels. Through Week 3, CFB on FOX is averaging 4,174,000 viewers, with last week’s Nebraska/Oklahoma matchup averaging 4,210,000 viewers.

Rounding out our ratings barrage, FOX Sports also reports that its coverage of Sunday’s NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series averaged 1,452,000 viewers. That ranks as the most-watched event in series history.

According to ESPN, ‘All for Hockey’ “bridges the gap between hockey and humanity, telling the story of the game of hockey from the perspective of a wide variety of real fans. NBC Sports teamed up with SharpLink Gaming, an online sports technology company that connects sports fans, leagues and sports websites to sports betting content, in a move to create a free-to-play, interactive game for the Ryder Cup. Ryder Cup Fantasy online game will be available on www.RyderCup.com and the official Ryder Cup mobile apps for iOS and Android, with fans able to choose six golfers from either the U.S. or European teams and earn points the same way the professional golfers will earn points in the Ryder Cup matches.

The Philadelphia Flyers and Wells Fargo Center announced a landmark agreement with SeatGeek that designates the company as the official ticket exchange for the team and the arena. Through the agreement, the Flyers became SeatGeek’s first ever NHL ticketing partner, and the agreement is SeatGeek’s first official partnership in the Philadelphia area.

Riot Games’ first-ever Wild Rift Horizon Cup will land in Singapore starting November 13. Sportradar announced that Michael Jordan will serve as a special advisor to Sportradar’s Board of Directors, while also increasing his investment in the company.
