History will lay down its Roots on Memorial Day. Beginning Monday, May 30 at 9p and running for four consecutive nights on History, A&E and Lifetime, the eight-hour event series developed by History, from A+E Studios, is a reboot of the miniseries offering a historical portrait of American slavery that recounts the journey of one family and their will to survive. Cast includes Forest Whitaker, Anna Paquin, Laurence Fishburne, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Anika Noni Rose. LeVar Burton, who portrayed Kunta Kinte in the original Roots, is a co-executive producer. “Nearly 40 years ago I had the privilege to be a part of an epic television event that started an important conversation in America,” Burton said. “I am incredibly proud to be a part of this new retelling and start the dialogue again, at a time when it is needed more than ever.”
The CW revealed midseason premiere dates for new limited series Containment, the return of Reign and the final season of Beauty And The Beast. Containment will debut Tuesday, April 19 at 9p, following The Flash. Reign returns with on a new night, Monday, April 25 at 8p, taking over the slot for Crazy Ex- Girlfriend’s following that show’s season finale on April 18. Beauty And The Beast begins its farewell run Thursday, June 2 at 9p.
NBC is hoping for some Satisfaction when it airs a special primetime SNL episode Saturday night, 10-11p, featuring Tom Hanks as host and Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards as musical guest. And, yes, it does happen to be February sweeps. Start Me Up.
Donald Trump and Univision settled their lawsuit arising from Univision’s decision last year not to broadcast the Miss Universe and Miss USA pageants. Terms of the settlement were not disclosed, but both issued amicable statements. Said Trump in a statement, “I have known Univision’s president and CEO, Randy Falco, for more than 20 years and I’m glad we are able to put these differences behind us.” Echoed a Falco statement: “I have known Donald Trump for many years in both a personal and professional capacity and we are pleased to settle this matter and move forward.”
Matt LeBlanc and Chris Evans have a new squad. BBC America announced motorsport guru and Formula 1 commentator Eddie Jordan, world record-breaking German racing driver Sabine Schmitz, motoring journalist and YouTube petrolhead Chris Harris and car reviewer Rory Reid will join the duo for the new reboot of Top Gear.
Taylor Swift, nominated for seven Grammys this year, will open the show on Monday, February 15, with a song from her nominated album 1989. Alabama Shakes, Joey Alexander and Miguel are also slated to take the stage as the final additions to the 58th annual celebration of all things music, airing live on CBS at 8p.

Emmy winner K.P. Anderson is headed to Lionsgate TV in a new overall deal to create original, new series and formats via his Pygmy Wolf Productions. Lionsgate will have exclusive rights to alternative and scripted TV content produced by Pygmy Wolf. For the past 11 years Anderson was exec producer and head writer of E!’s The Soup; he also developed and exec-produced series including BBC America’s The Nerdist, Nickelodeon’s You Gotta See This and Style Network’s The Dish.
Stuart Miller, Emmy-winning producer of Comedy Central‘s The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, will serve as an executive producer for the new Bill Simmons talk show slated to debut on HBO later this year. Former Daily Show writer Jason Ross will serve as head writer for the new series, and Peabody-winning producer Kim Gamble will co-executive produce.
The Diceman cometh. Showtime has set Sunday, April 10 at 9:30p as the premiere date for new comedy series Dice. The scripted, semi-autobiographical show will follow the life of comedian Andrew Dice Clay, chronicling the stops and starts of his career in his transplanted home base of Las Vegas. Series also stars Kevin Corrigan, with guests Natasha Leggero, Lorraine Bracco, Adrien Brody, Michael Rapaport, Wayne Newton, Criss Angel and Rita Rudner. Dice was created by Scot Armstrong (Old School) and is exec-produced by Armstrong, Sean Furst, Bryan Furst, Clay, Bruce Rubenstein, Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka.
AMC ordered a new late-night talk show, Geeking Out (wt). Hosted by Kevin Smith (Comic Book Men) and Greg Grunberg (Heroes) the half-hour show will look at pop culture through a fanboy lens and feature talk, clips, celebrity interviews and out-of-the-studio segments. The series is produced by Matador Content and The Weinstein Co. in association with Bandwagon Media with Jay Peterson, Patrick Reardon, Smith and Grunberg serving as executive producers.

FYI’s new docuseries Bride & Prejudice will walk down the aisle on Tuesday, March 8 at 9p. The series follows three star-crossed couples who desperately want to get married, but whose prejudiced family members do not approve of their unions.
Steve Rotfeld Productions is adding a new series to its Xploration Station three-hour block of STEM-focused programming that airs Saturday mornings on Fox affiliates. YouTube personality and Ellen Show regular Steve Spangler will host DIY Sci, a do-it-yourself pop-science show set to debut this fall that follows Spangler as he uses “everyday” items to turn the world around him into an unexpected laboratory. New series joins Xploration Awesome Planet, Xploration Outer Space, Xploration Earth 2050 and Xploration FabLab.
Looks like Days Of Our Lives will live another day. Word is the soap, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this season, got a renewal for number 51 on NBC. “In a business where having a show remain on the air for two seasons is considered a success, what Days has achieved is extraordinary,”said Jennifer Salke, president, NBC Entertainment.
Is it summer yet? Insane Pools: Off the Deep End dives in for a sophomore run on Animal Planet on Friday, February 26, at 9p. The series follows mastermind Lucas Congdon and his Lucas Lagoons team as they take their business and customers’ backyards to a new level.
Starz will bring back hit series Outlander for a second season on Saturday, April 9 at 9p. The network yesterday also released a first look at its tongue-in-cheekteaser art, featuring onscreen couple Claire Randall Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) on the steps of Versailles.
Cheaper by the dozen? Brenda and Toby Willis and their 12 children will return to TLC in a second season of The Willis Family, debuting Tuesday, March 15 at 10p. The new season revolves around the musical family recording and producing a new album. First season averaged 1.4 million P2+ viewers.
Spike is celebrating the 100th episode of Bar Rescue on Sunday, March 6 at 9p with the return of new eps of the Jon Taffer-starring series. For the milestone episode, Taffer heads to a Minneapolis suburb to settle the score between two feuding bar owners at Mac & Chester’s and SRO, where the bar is literally split in half.
CBS, Warner Bros. Television and comedy series Mom are teaming with the U.S. Surgeon General to raise awareness of the addiction epidemic. A new 30-second CBS Cares PSA, featuring U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek H. Murthy and series stars Anna Faris and Allison Janney, will debut after the Mom ep “Diabetic Lesbians and a Blushing Bride” on Thursday, February 18 at 9p.
America’s Navy World of X Games will air Saturday, February 13 at 2p on ABC featuring the best of X Games Aspen 2016. The sports and youth cultural event took place at Buttermilk Mountain in Aspen, Colo. January 28-31.
TNT will air the Juma-produced off-court special NBA Talent Challenge on Saturday at 6p, featuring talented ballers demonstrating their musical chops. “We couldn’t have a better group of entertaining judges for a talent competition than Shaq, Kenny [Smith], Charles [Barkley] and host Ernie Johnson,” Juma President Robert Horowitz tells Cynopsis. “Viewers are in for a real treat as we showcase eight NBA players with off-the-court skills ranging from piano to trumpet and sax to rap and even painting.” Judges will select the top five competitors; viewers then decide the winner via Twitter.
Animated series Lego Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures is headed to Disney XD this summer. Featuring new heroes and villains in adventures with familiar Star Wars characters, the series centers on a family of scavengers who build and sell starships. The series is a production of Wil Film, the Lego Group and Lucasfilm, and was developed for television by Bill Motz and Bob Roth (Penguins of Madagascar), who exec-produce with Torsten Jacobson (Lego Star Wars: Droid Tales) and Jill Wilfert (The Lego Movie).
Nickelodeon is unleashing animated genies-in-training series Shimmer and Shine for a second season, and launching a product portfolio including toys and games in conjunction with Fisher-Price, plus bedding, party goods and costumes in conjunction with Fisher-Price. The network debuted some of the new line at Toy Fair in NY this weekend.
Sprout will host a Land Before Time marathon this President’s Day weekend featuring all 13 films in the series, beginning Saturday, February 13 at 9a.
Disney Junior’s Doc McStuffins is expecting. The series will delve into the joys and challenges of adoption in a multi-episode story arc that begins Friday, March 4 at 8p. Experts from the National Center on Adoption and National Center on Adoption and Permanency served as consultants.
DreamWorks Animation and Lagardeere Active TV are in a new agreement that grants Lagardeere free-to-air and basic pay-tv rights for their family and kids channels to broadcast DreamWorks Animation’s television series, including Dragons: Race to the Edge, The Adventures of Puss in Boots, All Hail King Julien, Turbo Fast and The Mr. Peabody & Sherman Show. The collaboration will launch on Gulli in September 2016 with Dinotrux, DWA’s first original series.
Betty Boop is back. A new animated series starring the iconic cartoon character is in development at France-based Normaal Animation, producer of the Peanuts TV series, in partnership with Fleischer Studios (Max Fleischer created the character) and King Features.
ZooMoo Networks acquired animated series Origanimals and The Hive from Bejuba! Entertainment. Both series will be airing across all ZooMoo territories in the US, Asia and Latin America – with The Hive set to premiere in March followed by Origanimals in April.
Shawn Ashmore (X-Men movies) will co-star as a dashing assistant DA opposite Hayley Atwell in Conviction, ABC’s legal drama pilot. The show, from The Mark Gordon Co. and ABC Studios, was co-created by script-writer Liz Friedman and Liz Friedlander, who will direct the pilot. Mark Gordon and Nick Pepper are executive producers.
Daniel Sunjata (Graceland, Rescue Me) will be the lead in ABC’s drama pilot Notorious, from Sony Pictures TV and The Firm. Inspired by the relationship between defense attorney Mark Geragos and veteran Larry King Live exec producer Wendy Walker, the project was written by Josh Berman (Drop Dead Diva) and blogger Allie Hagan (Suri’s Burn Book).
Kyle Schmid (Being Human) will step into a lead role in History’s new military drama Six. Developed by A+E Studios and The Weinstein Co., the series about the brotherhood of Navy SEAL Team Six was written by William Broyles (Jarhead) and special ops veteran David Broyles.

Parkes-Macdonald and Image Nation Abu Dhabi acquired the exclusive rights from the Cousteau Foundation to develop a film and/or TV series based on the explorations of Jacques Cousteau, according to Deadline.
Turner France is the latest to launch animation channel Toonami, focused on delivering action-driven content for kids ages 8-12 including DC Comics-derived shows Batman, Superman, the Justice League and Green Lantern.
BBC Four acquired thriller series Modus, from Sweden. The drama follows a criminal psychologist and ex-FBI profiler who returns to Sweden to spend more time with his two daughters but becomes entangled in a case after the eldest daughter, who has autism, witnesses a murder.
Syfy’s 12 Monkeys is headed to Hulu as part of a new licensing deal with NBCUniversal. All episodes of the first season will be available for streaming beginning February 24.
NBCUniversal and Paramount Pictures will stage a cross-portfolio, multiplatform partnership to support upcoming theatrical sequel Zoolander 2. The companies created a spoof public service campaign titled “The Outside Matters,” featuring Ben Stiller as the film’s eponymous character in a series of parody PSAs. In the days leading up to the film’s release, the videos will air on the networks, digital and social platforms of Bravo, E!, NBC, Telemundo and USA.
Dish Network and Fox settled their years-long dispute over ad-skipping technology housed in the Dish Hopper DVR. Dish subscribers will not be able to use AutoHop commercial-skipping functionality for new shows that air on Fox owned or affiliated stations. The agreement also covers disputes involving Slingbox technology and the AutoHop, PrimeTime Anytime and Transfers features.
In other Dish news, the company’s $20-monthly Sling TV streaming service is offering Cinemax to subscribers willing to pay an additional $10 a month. The offering makes Sling “the first live standalone Internet TV service to deliver Cinemax to an audience of cord-cutters and cord-nevers,” says the streaming company’s CEO Roger Lynch.

HGTV’s top-rated Fixer Upper shattered its ratings performance to date with a new premiere episode on Tuesday, February 9 at 9p that hit a series high rating of 1.6 among A25-54. Tuesday’s episode was the No. 1 telecast on cable and the No. 3 telecast on all of television among A25-54 and W25-54 ratings and impressions in the 9p-10p time slot. In addition, HGTV was the top-rated network on Tuesday in primetime among W25-54 and the No. 4 network among A25-54. More than 8 million total viewers watched HGTV on Tuesday night, making it one of the top five rated nights in the network’s history.
Telemundo’s biomusical scripted drama Celia propelled the network on Wednesday to its best performance at 8p since 2012, becoming the most-watched program on Telemundo in its time slot in recent years among total viewers (1,754,000) and A18-49 (675,000), according to Nielsen. On the heels of Celia, Telemundo’s new 8p romantic comedy Quien es Quien delivered 1,246,000 total viewers and 638,000 A18-49 during last night’s premiere.
During the week of February 1 ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live drew its biggest overall audience and matched its strongest performance among A18-49 in two months, since Thanksgiving week, according to Nielsen’s Live + Same Day ratings. Kimmel shot up over the prior week by 17 percent in Total Viewers and by 12 percent in A18-49, standing as the only 11:35p talk show to post week-to-week growth among young adults.

Fox topped 8p with 2.2/8 for American Idol, followed by ABC’s The Middle with 1.8/7 and The Goldbergs with 2.0/7. At 9p ABC pulled ahead with an average 2.2/8 for Modern Family (2.6/8) and Black-ish (1.8/6), followed by Law & Order: SVU on NBC with 1.9/6. NBC took first at 10p with 2.0/7 for Chicago PD; CBS’s Code Black was second with 1.3/5.
