Cynopsis: DIGITAL
01.24.13
Good morning. It’s Thursday, January 24, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Netflix and YouTube have been working together on DIAL, a new open-source protocol meant to link separate screens much in the same way Apple currently does with its AirPlay product. The goal for DIAL, which stands for “discover and launch,” is pretty straightforward: It’s designed to enable second-screen devices to discover and launch apps on first-screen devices, provided that they’re plugged into the same home network. The DIAL website provides a pretty good example of why and how this would improve the home entertainment experience. To put it simply, the protocol removes the hurdle of having to launch an app on a connected TV before users can interact with it via their second-screen device. With DIAL, a Netflix user can launch the streaming app on a smartphone and tablet and then use it to launch the app on a connected TV screen, without needing to touch the remote or the gaming controller. As noted earlier, DIAL is similar to AirPlay. However, according to GigaOM, which was able to get some additional info about DIAL from Netflix, DIAL in some ways expands beyond what AirPlay is capable of. For instance, DIAL will be able to tell if an app is installed on a connected TV, and if it isn’t, will direct users to the corresponding app store to download it. Per GigaOM, DIAL will also be able to launch web apps on the TV, if the device supports it.
What’s interesting about this protocol, aside from the companies behind it, is the support it’s receiving from the CE and content communities. Netflix told GigaOM that Sony and Samsung provided a lot of assistance in ensuring that the protocol was compatible with their existing software. In addition, content providers like the BBC, Hulu, Pandora, and Flingo have already put their names down on DIAL’s application name registry.
More NATPE 2013 news from Content Television: The division of Content Media Corporation plans to make Larry King Now, the digital talk show hosted by the legendary broadcaster, available for international audiences. Produced by Ora TV, an on-demand digital network co-founded by former CNN anchor and investor Carlos Slim, Larry King Now first made its debut in the US exclusively on Hulu and Hulu Plus. Content Television is now offering digital and TV rights to the series worldwide, including secondary broadcast rights in the US. Larry King will be in attendance at NATPE.
SBS Interactive, the digital division of the Spanish Broadcasting System (SBS), has re-launched MegaTV’s website to provide entertainment, sports, and news video content for the US Hispanic audience. Revamped after “months” of experimentation, which involved direct user feedback, Mega.TV offers more video content from SBS’ lineup of Spanish-language shows and novellas, as well as sports and news content. Other features include enhanced search and navigation capabilities, mobile optimization, geo-targeted information and news, social media integrations, and the ability to participate in live chats with MegaTV show talent.
LoveFilm, Amazon’s SVOD service in the UK, has struck a deal with Channel 4 to offer its members access to archived programming from the British broadcaster’s 4 on Demand (4oD) service. This includes titles such as Peep Show, Father Ted, The Inbetweeners, Queer as Folk, and Friday Night Dinner. LoveFilm says new content will be available via a custom section on the service. The service will also look to bring additional titles from Channel 4 in the future, including “seven series” of Shameless (the original version) and every episode of The IT Crowd.
Here’s some web-centric TV news to snack on: truTV is launching a new series starring Shaquille O’Neal that will see the former NBA superstar put “his own hilarious spin on online videos.” Premiering Thursday, February 21, at 10:30pm ET/PT, Upload with Shaquille O’Neal will feature Shaq and his comedian friends Gary Owen (Think Like a Man) and Godfrey (The Mr. Men Show) scouring the web for the funniest online videos and then commenting on them. In other words, it’s Tosh.0, but with Shaq. They’ll also look to produce their own viral videos, as well as pull pranks and create parodies of trending pop culture stories. truTV has so far ordered 10 episodes, all of which are executive produced by FishBowl Worldwide Media’s Vini Di Bona and Bruce Gersh, Mike Gibbons, Greg Heller, Susan Levinson, and Beth Greenwald, along with Shaq Entertainment’s Shaquille O’Neal, Perry Rogers, Colin Smeeton, and Mike Parris.

Glam Media, in partnership with SaaS analytics company Moat, has launched Glam Content Analytics. Glam describes its branded advertising content partnership with Moat and the Glam Content Analytics product as a way to provide advertisers with measurement that goes beyond simple page views and shares. The product is designed to determine how much attention a user pays to a particular piece of content through “focus-related attributes” such as whether the user is scrolling through the content and/or how much time is spent with the content in the user’s active browser window. To create these measurement tools, Glam says it, along with Moat, collected data from over 350 Glam bloggers running more than 60 content marketing campaigns.
HBO has renewed its deal with video optimization technology provider Conviva to support the premium programmer’s HBO Go and MAX Go streaming services for another six years. The deal also expands Conviva’s suite of services to HBO’s international partners in order to help the distribution of HBO Go across the globe. HBO Go uses Conviva’s Precision Video technology on select Conviva-supported platforms to prevent viewers from having to deal with buffering interruptions. Via Conviva’s Insights platform, HBO analyzes the viewer experience with the streaming service. It then takes those insights and looks to improve each individual engagement by using Precision Video to maintain optimal bitrate and CDN stream source, all in real time.
During Google’s Q4 2012 earnings call, Nikesh Arora, the company’s SVP and Chief Business Officer told the audience that YouTube users are now watching more than 4 billion hours of videos on the site per month. In May 2012, YouTube had reported that viewers across the globe were watching more than 3 billion hours of YouTube videos per month. In addition, Arora said that YouTube’s top 100 advertisers spent 50% more in 2012 than in 2011. Another interesting number that Arora threw out was $8 million. That’s how much revenue Google brought in thanks to YouTube viewings of Korean star Psy’s music video for his viral hit “Gangnam Style.” The music video so far has more than 1.23 billion video views on YouTube. Since YouTube shares half of the ad revenue with content creators, which means Psy so far has made $4 million from YouTube views alone. Here are some additional stats that YouTube recently updated.
Global ad spend grew 3.3% year-over-year between January and September 2012, according to Nielsen‘s quarterly Global AdView Pulse report. Advertisers continue to spend the most on TV ads (no surprise there), but Nielsen’s report says that its online and cinema ad spend that grew the most during the January-September 2012 time period, with year-over-year increases of 7.7% and 9.2%, respectively. That said, online and cinema account for the two smallest slices of the overall media spend pie, with 2.7% and 0.3% share of spend, respectively.

77% of Generation X and Y believe celebrity culture is more influential in our lives today than it was five years ago, and 66% believe it will be even more influential five years from now than it is today. This is according to the Celebrity Yearbook section of NBCUniversal Integrated Media’s The Curve Report, which looks to examine the “intersection of digital trends, celebrity culture, and consumer behavior” based on data from Generation X and Y survey respondents, expert interviews, and proprietary research.
