   IN THE NEWS

Midterm spending for the 2026 cycle is on track to top $10 billion – just 8% shy of the 2024 presidential cycle ($11.2 billion) and 16% higher than the 2022 midterms ($8.9 billion), according to Kinetiq’s The $10 Billion Midterm. Broadcast leads with 46.2% of spend, while streaming captures roughly 25%.

Eighty-seven percent of agency professionals believe the traditional agency model is either broken or will be within 3-5 years, according to a survey from Basis. Its 2026 report paints an industry under pressure from complexity, economics, and AI disruption, forcing a rethink of how agencies operate, deliver value, and get paid. The bottom line: AI can accelerate growth, but only if it runs on structured, connected systems. “As the agency model transforms, the question now is what tools, technologies and practices these businesses will use to refit and remodel,” said Ryan Manchee, SVP of Brand Marketing at Basis. “While AI can be a business accelerator and force multiplier for agencies, it is only effective if it operates on advertising systems that are structured and connected.”

Roku’s got game: The Roku City screensaver is leveling up with a free interactive game. Roku City Dash lets users fly through the fan-favorite metropolis, weaving past familiar landmarks and hidden Easter eggs while dodging obstacles to rack up a high score. “It’s a fun way to celebrate our beloved town, expand our platform’s interactivity, and give users a new way to spend time with Roku,” said Lisa Holme, Head of Content at Roku Media.

The season two finale of HBO Max’s “The Pitt” delivered a series-high 9.7 million US viewers through its opening weekend, reports Warner Bros. Discovery. The medical drama is averaging 15.4 million viewers across all episodes, up 50% from its first season average, making it the sixth current HBO Max series to top 15 million domestic viewers, after “House of the Dragon,” “The White Lotus,” “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” “The Last of Us” and “IT: Welcome to Derry.”

HGTV has re-edited an episode of “Renovation Aloha” that showed footage of human remains discovered during filming in Hawai‘i. The remains are considered sacred, and state law prohibits their depiction on camera. The network apologized, with Warner Bros. Discovery’s VP of Communications Lynne Davis Adeyemi stating: “We take the concerns raised by the Native Hawaiian community very seriously and are committed to ensuring our programming is respectful and appropriate.”

Prior to Washington, Wellons was CNBC’s San Francisco Bureau Chief, where she helped launch the bureau in 2015 and build the brand’s technology coverage in the Bay Area.
