10/01/21: The Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime Show landed five artists for this year’s celebration

Super Bowl LVI has its halftime performers locked in as Pepsi, the NFL and Roc Nation locked in a quintet of artists. The Pepsi Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show will see Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige and Kendrick Lamar take the stage at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood on Feb. 13, 2022, airing on NBC and Telemundo and streaming live on Peacock. The show marks the first time the five multi-award-winning artists will perform together on stage.

As part of the collaboration around the Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime Show, Pepsi and the NFL have also joined together to support the launch of Regional School #1, a magnet high school in South Los Angeles that is set to open for students next fall as part of the LA Unified School District.

“Artists like Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg were at the forefront of the West Coast hip hop revolution, so to be able to bring them back to LA, where it all began alongside Eminem, Mary J. PROGRAMMING

Qatar fueled a 10-year deal with Formula 1 that will rev up in 2023. In addition, Qatar’s Losail International Circuit will host its first ever Formula 1 Grand Prix on November 19-21, with the country set to host the 20th event of the 2021 season.

Univision TUDN’s coverage of the UEFA Champions League saw Paris St-Germain/Manchester City average 981,000 viewers and 511,000 A 18-49, according to Nielsen, to rank as the second best UEFA Champions League Group Stage match telecast ever in the US. For the stage, matches across Univision’s networks are up double digit advantages versus a year ago with an average audience of 485,000 Total Viewers 2+ (39%) and 250,000 A18-49 (38%).

ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown will originate live from Gillette Stadium on Oct. 3 to mark Tom Brady’s return to New England and preview Week 4 action. The fifth road trip in the 36-year history of Sunday NFL Countdown, Sam Ponder will host this three-hour pregame with Tedy Bruschi, Randy Moss, Matt Hasselbeck and Rex Ryan.

ESPN revealed plans to launch a new NHL program, titled The Point and kicking off on Oct. 7. The series will be hosted by John Buccigross and will air Tuesday-Friday on opening week on ESPN before settling into Thursdays at 3p on ESPN2. The Point premieres October 7 at 5p on ESPN2 live from Studio F in Bristol.

ESPN will also launch Debatable – a new digital-exclusive series – across the network’s Twitter, Facebook and YouTube channels and the ESPN App. The series will be led by a rotating team of signature voices that will “carry the spirit of the network’s former show Highly Questionable into Debatable and take on the most compelling topics from around the sports world with even greater depth and digression.” New 45-60 minute episodes will be available every weekday.

Speaking of the company, ESPN’s viewership for the 2021 season of Sunday Night Baseball was up 18% over 2020, according to Nielsen. Sunday Night Baseball averaged 1,456,000 viewers across its 24 telecasts. Viewership for 2021 was also up double-digits from 2020 among Women 18+ (20 percent), Women 18-49 (16 percent), People 12-24 (20 percent), People 18-49 (12 percent), People 12-17 (11 Percent) and People 18+ (18 percent).

NBC Sports will see an all-women broadcast team call the ShopRite LPGA Classic at the Bay Course at Seaview Hotel and Golf Club in Galloway, N.J., this week on GOLF Channel, marking the first-ever all-women golf broadcast team in U.S. television history. The commentary team will feature Cara Banks handling play-by-play duties, alongside analyst Judy Rankin, tower announcer Paige Mackenzie and on-course reporters Karen Stupples and Kay Cockerill. Tournament coverage will be produced by long-time NBC Sports and GOLF Channel producer Beth Hutter.

The National Lacrosse League revealed its full 2021-22 game schedule, beginning with Face Off Weekend, December 3-4. Each team will play nine home and nine away contests during the season. TSN will broadcast a regular season “Game of the Week” on linear television as well as distribute every regular season game on its digital platforms, the TSN app or TSN.ca.

Josina Anderson joined CBS Sports HQ as an NFL Insider where she will serve as an on-air reporter on the free 24/7 streaming sports news network. Anderson will also contribute with a weekly appearance on the CBS Sports Pick Six NFL Podcast alongside host Will Brinson, and cover the NFL with written editorial articles each week on CBSSports.com.

ReachTV and the NFL cemented a multi-year licensing rights agreement that will see ReachTV carry national NFL games across more than 2,500 of their owned-and-operated screens in over 85 airports throughout the country. The multi-year deal gives ReachTV the exclusive rights to air NFL games across airports, including Thursday Night Football, Sunday Night Football, Monday Night Football and the complete slate of national games on Sunday. It will also include the Playoffs and Super Bowl.

Heading into the final three races of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series – Talladega (Oct. 2), Martinsville (Oct. 30) and Phoenix (Nov. 5) – the series is averaging 602,000 viewers per race on FS1, according to Nielsen. That number marks a 19% rise over equivalent events in 2020 (506,000), and 12% bump over 2019 (539,000).

Sugarlands Distilling Co. and the New Orleans Saints inked a multiyear accord making Sugarlands Shine the “Official Moonshine of the Saints.” As part of the deal, Sugarlands will also produce two specialty products unique to the New Orleans market and surrounding areas. “Few teams in pro sports have a fanbase as passionate and loyal as the Saints,” said Ned Vickers, president and founder, Sugarlands Distilling Co. “We put that same passion into developing each of our craft cocktail products and we’re thrilled to enter into a long-term partnership with the Saints. NIKE co-founder Phil Knight as well as other Oregon alumni announced the formation of Division Street, Inc., a sport venture that leverage NIL opportunities for University of Oregon athletes. To lead the effort, Knight has tapped Rosemary St. Clair, former VP and GM of NIKE Women, to serve as CEO of Division Street, and the company has partnered with former Oregon star Sabrina Ionescu to serve as Chief Athlete Officer.

DIGITAL, DATA & TECH

ESPN Fantasy Football scored a new all-time record for sign-ups this season, up 21% over last year and up 3% over the previous high set in 2019. The new milestone for Fantasy Football follows record participation in the 2020-21 seasons of ESPN Fantasy Basketball and Fantasy Hockey, which also set all-time highs for sign-ups over the previous year, up 21% and 8%, respectively.

Stats Perform and LiveLike partnered on an integrated offering that “brings stats to life within live sports viewing.” Through this partnership, Stats Perform’s trusted sports data will be integrated into LiveLike’s platform, using AI to insert stats into features such as trivia and quizzes.

Fanatics’ new trading card company raised $350 million at a $10.4 billion valuation with the Series A round for the spinoff company coming from Silver Lake, Insight Partners, and Endeavor. The three investors collectively secured an approximate 3.4% stake in the new company.

ESPORTS

Valve is tapping hardware brand SteelSeries to serve as the official peripherals brand for Dota 2’s The International. With the deal, the company will now provide its slate of mice, keyboards, headsets, and accessories to players participating in The International 10. SteelSeries will also host a series of activations during the tournament in Bucharest.

Gen.G and Puma revealed the newly designed jerseys for the 2021 League of Legends World Championship, featuring artwork designed by famed streetwear designer and Gen.G’s Executive Brand Advisor Heron Preston. The jersey will be worn by Gen.G’s League of Legends Champions Korea. The jersey is revealed as the next phase of a partnership between PUMA and Gen.G, which was initially announced in June 2020.

Hawks Talon Gaming announced the promotion of Wesley Acuff to Director of Esports. In his new role, Acuff will be responsible for managing the daily esports operation and leading the organization through the annual NBA 2K League Draft.
