Google has made a proposal to settle an EU antitrust investigation into its digital advertising business, a source tells Reuters. The move comes ahead of a scheduled court hearing this week related to a 4.32 billion euro fine over Google’s Android mobile operating system.

Google also announced new Android features that allow users to control their Google TV with their phone, play games from GameSnacks in Android Hide, control their phone with facial gestures and hide sensitive photos in a “Locked Folder,” among other things. They can also get “Heads Up” reminders to watch where they’re going when walking while using their phone.

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney got a hard “no” when he asked Apple to reinstate Epic’s developer program account, saying his company would adhere to Apple’s guidelines this time around. “Epic committed an intentional breach of contract, and breach of trust, by concealing code from Apple and making related misrepresentations and omissions,” responded Apple. “Apple has exercised its discretion not to reinstate Epic’s developer program account at this time. Furthermore, Apple will not consider any further requests for reinstatement until the district court’s judgment becomes final and nonappealable.” Epic is appealing a court decision that found Apple was within its rights to boot Epic for breaking its rules.

Facebook CTO Mike Schroepfer will step down in 2022 and become a “senior fellow,” working on initiatives like recruiting and fostering the company’s AI investments. Andrew Bosworth, head of Facebook Reality Labs, will take on the CTO position after a transition period.

Paypal has introduced the first version of a “super app” that combines direct deposit, a digital wallet, bill pay, crypto capabilities and more. The company has also partnered with Synchrony Bank for PayPal Savings, which will offer a high-yield savings account with a 0.4% Annual Percentage Yield.

Premium streaming platforms have been increasing spending on social media in an attempt to attract young, new streaming consumers, according to BrandTotal. The social media research company reports that from June 23 to September 20, Disney+ (30%), HBO Max (23%) and Hulu (21%) have been the top providers in terms of share of voice on social-media platforms. YouTube commanded 59% of all ad impressions, followed by Twitter with 32%, Facebook with 7% and Instagram with 2%.

Nielsen announced an “Impressions First Initiative” to support the move to impressions-based buying and selling in local markets. The move to impressions will occur in conjunction with the integration of broadband only homes into Nielsen’s local measurement metrics in January 2022, and lays the groundwork for implementing Nielsen ONE across local, national, and digital measurement. “Impressions are the great equalizer across all screens, programs, listeners and viewers,” said David Kenny, CEO of Nielsen. “Nielsen’s move to prioritize reporting impressions will help standardize the way it measures ads and content, enabling greater comparability across National, Local and Digital and is in line with Nielsen’s initiative to drive comparable metrics which are foundational to Nielsen ONE.”

Facebook has agreed to participate in the September 30 Senate hearing, “Protecting Kids Online: Facebook, Instagram, & Mental Health Harms.” Facebook’s Global Head of Safety Antigone David is scheduled to attend the hearing, which Senator Richard Blumenthal said will “examine the toxic effects of Facebook and Instagram on young people and others.”

Google delisted a game from Google Play and suspended the developer’s account after drawing criticism for a lapse that allowed sexually explicit ads to direct users to the app’s listing in the Play Store. The ad violated guidelines that state sexually explicit ads are a violation of Google’s Developer Program Policies.

NBC is collaborating with Pinterest to mark the premiere of the network’s “Ordinary Joe,” a drama about the choices people make. For the first time, Pinterest is combining an immersive experience with Creator Idea Pins to help Pinners explore their “what if” journey. The personalized quiz experience features a series of questions related to users’ passions resulting in a Pinterest board of Creator Idea Pins.

Influencer marketing platform CreatorIQ has acquired influencer marketing analytics platform Tribe Dynamics. The deal brings together Tribe Dynamics’ analytics and benchmarking solutions with the ability to make those insights actionable through CreatorIQ’s Creator Intelligence Cloud. The combined company will extend CreatorIQ’s position as the largest influencer marketing SaaS platform in terms of revenue growth, data authority and global expansion with over 450 customers, 250 employees and $90 million in funding.

Hamburg-based Musicube, a provider of advanced AI solutions for the music industry, has completed a raise of $560,000 USD, led by German investors including Holger Hübner, co-founder of the Wacken Open Air. Musicube plans to expand into the US market and deliver more scalable solutions for the music streaming market; musicube’s technology generates more than 500 tags (moods, instruments, and more) for more than 47 million songs using its audio analysis AI.

IPG Mediabrands is tapping new Gracenote Inclusion Analytics solution to help gain new visibility into gender, race, ethnicity and sexual orientation of talent appearing in linear and streaming TV programming. Mediabrands will leverage the data and insights to help its clients reach key target audiences, meet marketing objectives and deliver on DE&I related initiatives.

Ryff has partnered with Parrot Analytics to target global sports, TV and film viewers based on their interests. Parrot’s global audience demand and brand affinity databases aim to eliminate irrelevant or unsuitable product placements and increase brand ROI for Ryff customers.

Yahoo has partnered with Shopify to help Shopify sellers grapple with the loss of third-party cookies. Sellers can now use Yahoo ConnectID, a people-first persistent identifier for the cookie-less world.

IRIS.TV and SpringServe are working together to enable video-level contextual targeting for CTV through SpringServe’s platform for ad inventory management aimed at making it easier for advertisers to extract maximum value from their CTV investments, leveraging contextual targeting to enhance performance and ensure that messages connect directly to the intended audience, while providing publishers with the tools to enhance revenue.

OOH advertising marketplace AdQuick.com announced it has formed a strategic partnership with global digital OOH marketplace VIOOH. AdQuick customers are now able to tap into VIOOH’s U.S. inventory immediately. More countries will be added to the partnership in the coming months.

A report from the VAB demonstrated that an increased TV investment, combined with a total audience TV buying strategy, results in clear business gains. “Our analysis proves marketers who target all consumers and broaden beyond traditional buying demos experience significant financial upside,” said Danielle DeLauro, EVP, VAB. “KPIs including customer base growth, website traffic and revenue are all impacted by shifting to a total audience mindset, which for data-driven DTC brands is a winning component of their success.” Since 2017, the 30 DTC brands analyzed have invested over $3 billion in TV advertising, significantly increasing their presence on the platform. Among the outcomes of brands’ expanded investments:
· This equates to over 600 billion national TV impressions over the time period for these 30 brands, with 70% of the delivery towards adults 50+.
· The exposure to this adult 50+ audience resulted in the influx of new consumers through the digital storefronts of the 30 brands.
· This drove clear business results with exponential growth in consumer action and digital engagement across brands: from Q1 2017 to Q1 2021, unique visitors per month increased by an average of 63%; total visits per month increased by an average of 135%; and total minutes increased by an average of 89%.

STREAMING

Apple TV+ had fewer than 20 million subscribers in the US and Canada as of July 2021, Apple told the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, allowing it to pay discounted rates to production crew members. The IATSE is seeking to eliminate that discount, established in 2009.

Connected TV is among the fastest growing channels in digital advertising today. According to eMarketer, 67% of the U.S. population is expected to be using CTV by 2025, representing a $27 billion dollar ad market. To that end, Viant Technology Inc. and Integral Ad Science announced an expanded partnership integrating IAS’s CTV fraud pre-bid solution within the Adelphic advertising software, enhancing CTV fraud protection capabilities for brands and agencies.

Comcast launched new wireless streaming device the XiOne, enabling the first delivery of video services over internet protocol for Sky customers in Europe. The device is part of Comcast’s larger hardware strategy to own “input A” on TV sets.

Wurl has unveiled Wurl Perform, a new performance marketing service that enables streaming TV apps to acquire new viewers and reduce churn via targeted promotional campaigns. With Wurl Perform, every campaign impression and conversion is measured, which provides streamers trackable return on ad spend.

Redbox expanded the reach of its streaming app to millions of devices via a distribution agreement with Vewd. Its app will be pre-loaded on new Vewd powered televisions and set-top boxes in the U.S. Vewd will also feature the Redbox app to existing customers on brands such as Hisense, Funai and Tivo, as well as Pay TV operators like Evoca

CBSN streaming service has a new name: CBS News. Along with the move, local news streaming services will be rebranded, such as CBS News Denver and CBS News Boston. Neeraj Khemlani, President and Co-Head of CBS News and Stations revealed the name change during a town hall, noting that it is “another example of how we are bringing our divisions together.”

Polaris, the Black-owned, free ad-supported streaming channel, is coming to Vizio’s SmartCast platform. Created by digital media pioneer and journalist Rahman J. Dukes, Polaris aims to uncover and share stories created by Black, Indigenous and People of Color about Hip-Hop and Black culture.

MATV Motorsports Network launched 24/7 streaming channel MAVTV Select on Pluto TV. It features a vast lineup of racing content including “American Sprint Car Series,” “Late Model Dirt Series,” “Pro Pulling League,” “ARCA Menards” and more available for free.

WAVE.tv is now available on Atmosphere. Already a sports partner to Snap, Facebook, TikTok, Instagram and YouTube, the deal expands WAVE.tv’s distribution footprint to reach Atmosphere’s 25 million viewers.

Steann Media and CatapultX have joined forces to bring content providers a new way to monetize content through non-intrusive programmatic ads. CatapultX’s technology uses AI to power contextually relevant and non-interruptive video ads integrated directly within video content.
