The ad industry is tacking online hate speech with the #EngageResponsibly social media campaign, set to launch later in 2021. “With this initiative, the ANA will bring together the industry to educate and inspire consumers to act,” said ANA CEO Bob Liodice. “We will provide the industry with a turnkey, no-cost solution that matches the brand safety protocols used by those organizations committed to responsible advertising under the GARM framework.” The effort is backed by funding from spirits marketer Perod Ricard.
Netflix canceled espionage thriller “Hit & Run” after one season. The pricey drama took three years to produce, thanks to the pandemic, and closed with a cliffhanger kidnapping.
On the flip side, Netflix handed “Virgin River” a two-season, 20-episode order, for seasons four and five. The romantic drama is based on the bestselling book series by Robyn Carr. Netflix also renewed reality series “My Unorthodox Life,” for a second season.
Amazon repeated as #1 in Brand Keys’ annual loyalty ranking, followed by Apple, Netflix, Domino’s Pizza, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Google, WhatsApp, Instagram and Nike. TikTok rose to #25.
Discovery, Inc. is aiming to raise awareness for endangered species with the installation of a bronze tiger statue, created by artist Sonny Behan, at the United Nations building in NYC ahead of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly. Discovery supports nearly six million acres of tiger habitat across India, Bhutan and Russia through its Project C.A.T campaign, launched in partnership with World Wildlife Fund to help protect and support the conservation of a transboundary tiger landscape.
The state of the NYC Media and Tech Industries is strong, but increased diversity and an openness to startups and tech innovation is key to future growth, according to an assessment by the NYC Media Lab. “New York used to be able to sell itself as being the center of everyone. Writers, storytellers, photographers, all would come here to be ‘in the mix,’” said Steven Rosenbaum, Executive Director of NYC Media Lab. “But the mix is now online, with less in person events or coffees….New York needs to sell the ability to connect with a diverse talent pool, critical for these industries to continue to grow. That is what makes New York unique and powerful.”
Twitter has agreed to settle a securities class action lawsuit brought against it in 2016 that claims Twitter violated the Securities Exchange Act by knowingly misleading investors over some of its metrics, which artificially inflated the price of the stock. If approved, Twitter will pay $809.5 million.

STREAMING
Netflix tied CBS’ 1974 record Emmy haul of 44 this year, a milestone not lost on its execs. “I was here eight years ago when we started having drama shows with ‘House of Cards’ and we had no idea if we were going to be eligible even,” said Peter Friedlander, the streamer’s head of US and Canada scripted series, on a press call. “So to be where we are as of last night eight years later felt like such a sea change, and it’s so thrilling.” But when it comes to airing the Emmys ceremony, don’t look for Netflix to steal the show just yet. “Broadcast TV still does great live events and they know how to put these shows on,” said Bela Bajaria, Netflix head of global TV.
Think FAST: Google has held discussions with programming partners about distributing free, ad-supported channels to Google TV, reports Protocol. The free streaming channels could launch on Google TV as early as fall 2021. Thoughts on the possible move? “Because Google owns the hardware in Chromecast, as well as SSP and DSP assets, it can quickly move to compete with end-to-end players like Roku and the OEMs for CTV ad dollars,” offered Michael Zacharski, CEO Engine Media Exchange. “However, it could appear as both an obvious play to connect the dots for advertisers looking to fulfill omnichannel media solutions and an opportunity to gain maximum advantage in the data targeting and measurement space, as Apple and Google continue their work to scuttle the current cookie based ad economy.”
“Discovered by chance” is the #1 way viewers are finding streaming service content, according to a study from Conviva, with 38% of respondents citing it as a top source for content discovery. That was followed by “saw on TV” (34%), “recommended by friends or family” (30%), “recommended while watching a streaming service” (28%), “friends were talking about it in person” (27%), “read or heard a review” (21%), and “saw an ad on social media” and “friends were talking about it on social media” (both 20%). For more on the challenges and solutions on content discovery, check out today’s Cynopsis Big TV panel on optimizing platforms for content discovery – details on the event are below.
That Big TV Virtual Conference starts in just a few hours! This virtual experience will highlight hard-hitting topics like innovative strategies for retaining streaming subscribers, mastering local OTT, turning measurement into incremental reach, averting the cookiepocalypse, and so much more. Grab your pass now, before it’s too late!!
COMING UP
CBS concert special “Broadway’s Back,” immediately following the streaming-only Tony Awards ceremony on Paramount+, will include appearances by Kristin Chenoweth, André De Shields, Jake Gyllenhaal, Audra McDonald, Idina Menzel, Lin-Manuel Miranda and more. The special will air live on Sunday, September 26 from Broadway’s Winter Garden Theatre.
Turner Classic Movies will celebrate the life and career of Hollywood Golden Age actress Jane Powell with a programming tribute on Saturday, October 16. Powell passed away on September 16 at age 92.
