STREAMING SNIPPETS

The best way to reach audiences is to combine all forms of TV, according to a new report from Effectv. “Advertisers should look to OTT as a powerful complement to linear TV and STB VOD to take full advantage of a multi-screen strategy of reaching audiences where they are,” said Dave Pajeau, Executive Director, Advanced Platform Solutions at Effectv. Some takeaways from the whitepaper:
· OTT is growing rapidly but its relative scale is still small compared to linear TV, especially taking into account non-ad supported SVOD consumption.
OTT, along with STB VOD, is an effective complement to linear TV as a way to optimize reach and frequency. When taking an audience-first approach, advertisers should be device-agnostic: OTT will deliver its relative share of audience as part of a well-rounded total TV media plan.

Short-form service Quibi, set to launch April 6, is facing a claim that one of its key technology features infringes on the intellectual property of Eko, a company that creates interactive videos. Eko says it invented the technology used in Quibi’s “Turnstyle,” which plays different videos depending on how viewers are holding their phones. “Over 10 years, Eko has contributed a multitude of patented inventions to the interactive video space,” an Eko spokeswoman said in a statement. “It appears that others have found significant value in incorporating our technology into their endeavors without our permission. We are hopeful for an amicable solution that rightfully recognizes our work.” Quibi responded that the “Turnstyle” technology was developed internally, and they have received a patent, adding, “These claims have absolutely no merit and we will vigorously defend ourselves against them in court.”
