Netflix added 9.3 million subscribers – versus the 4.9 million Wall Street had projected – to hit 269.6 million in the quarter ended March 31. The company also beat analysts’ forecasts with $9.37 billion in revenue. But the streamer said it planned to stop reporting subscriber totals starting with its first quarter results in 2025. “In our early days, when we had little revenue or profit, membership growth was a strong indicator of our future potential,” said the streamer in a letter to shareholders. “Now we’re generating very substantial profit and free cash flow (FCF). We are also developing new revenue streams like advertising and our extra member feature, so memberships are just one component of our growth. In addition, as we’ve evolved our pricing and plans from a single to multiple tiers with different price points depending on the country, each incremental paid membership has a very different business impact.”

Netflix renewed “The Witcher” for a fifth – and final – season, as production on season four of the fantasy drama commences. “It’s official, ‘The Witcher’ season 4 is in production,” posted Netflix on X, along with a video of a cast table read. “But that’s not all, we’re already planning season 5, which will be the final season and bring this epic show to a fitting conclusion. See you on The Continent.”

CBS’s “Elsbeth” will be back for a second season. “’Elsbeth’ has charmed audiences with its singular blend of delightful humor, distinctive ‘how-done-it’ storytelling and the inventive, brilliant quirkiness of Elsbeth Tascioni,” said Amy Reisenbach, President of CBS Entertainment. The series is also delivering 11 million viewers after 35 days of viewing, up 52% from time slot predecessor “CSI: Vegas.”

CBS’ “The Late Show” will air live from Chicago during the Democratic National Convention, holding down in the Windy City from August 19-22. “I started my career in Chicago, let’s see if I can end it there,” said host Stephen Colbert.

MediaCo Holding, operator of New York’s WQHT-FM (Hot 97) station, has acquired Estrella Media’s network, content, digital and commercial operations, including the EstrellaTV network and its linear and digital video content business, and FAST channels EstrellaTV, Estrella News, Cine EstrellaTV and Estrella Games. “This combination of tested media brands and talented teams will fuel growth of content and distribution for the benefit of our multicultural audiences,” said interim CEO Jacqueline Hernández. “We believe this combination is the first step in building a unique multicultural media company that will reach diverse US audiences wherever they choose to consume content and create value for marketers working to reach these important audiences.”

Marketing partnership of the week goes to Flonase and Shondaland, the makers of “Bridgerton,” for content that’s getting raves from viewers. As the Netflix show heads to its season three premiere on May 16, featuring Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton, aka “Polin,” a “Bridgerton”-like video created by the brands shows members of the Ton overcome with pollen as they stroll through gardens. The group looks for a cure at a nearby apothecary, only to discover it won’t be ready for 200 years. “’Bridgerton’ has such an incredibly engaged audience and we are constantly looking for ways to deliver fun and delightful moments,” said Chris Diiorio, CMO at Shondaland. “Partnering with Flonase on this campaign provided the perfect, unexpected collaboration that celebrates ‘Polin’ season.”

Oh, Canada! The Writers Guild of Canada has called for a strike authorization vote as it nears the April 23 deadline for its negotiations with the Canadian Media Producers Association. The current contract expired on December 31, and the two sides have been in talks since October. Compensation and AI protection remain sticking points.

Donald Trump isn’t the only one being admonished to keep quiet in his hush money trial. Judge Juan Merchan chastised the media for publishing details about a seated juror, who had to be dismissed after she said the publicity prevented her from being able to be impartial. “There’s a reason why this is an anonymous jury, and we’ve taken the measures we have taken,” Justice Juan Merchan told the press. “It kind of defeats the purpose of that when so much information is put out there.”

Ample Entertainment’s three-part wildlife reality competition show “The Hungry Games: Alaska’s Big Bear Challenge” landed an order from Peacock. The series, a co-production with Canada’s Love Nature that follows the bears of Alaska’s Katmai National Park as they bulk up for winter hibernation, will be narrated by Rhys Darby (“Flight of the Conchords”).

Netflix has ordered “America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders,” produced by One Potato Productions and Boardwalk Pictures in association with Campfire Studios, and follows the 2023-24 season. The new series comes after the squad ended its 16-year run on CMT with “Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making The Team.” “The kind of access and creative freedom we need to make the kind of work we want to make is not easy to come by – especially when dealing with a brand as large as the Dallas Cowboys,” said executive producer Greg Whiteley. “To their infinite credit, the Cowboys offered unfettered access for the year we filmed the DCC and left us alone. The result is an authentic portrait of one of the most storied and beloved institutions we have in American pop culture.”

Esquire article “The Redemption of Al Sharpton,” a profile of the civil rights activist and MSNBC host, has been acquired by ABC Signature to develop as a limited series. Deadline reports Anthony Anderson (“black-ish”) is expected to star as Sharpton and executive produce.

HBO and Bad Wolf (“Doctor Who”) are in the early stage of development on a series about disgraced, jailed art dealer Inigo Philbrick. Bad Wolf has grabbed rights to upcoming memoir All That Glitters, by Orlando Whitfield, a business partner of Philbrick.

Screen Australia and LA-based Dynamic Television (“Ginny & Georgia”) have launched the Dynamic Television Scripted Initiative. The program will fund the development of up to four scripted television projects. “When considering how to allocate resources and have a positive impact on Australian drama, we realized Screen Australia is the perfect partner,” said Dan March, Managing Partner of Dynamic TV. “We are all excited to facilitate new stories from the terrifically talented writers and producers Down Under.”

Tom Durant Pritchard (“The Crown”) has joined season five of Masterpiece drama “Miss Scarlet” (fka “Miss Scarlet and the Duke”), currently filming in Serbia. Pritchard’s character replaces William “The Duke” Wellington, who left with his portrayer, Stuart Martin.

Lifetime has extended its relationship with Garcelle Beauvais, who will executive produce two more “Black Girl Missing” movies. The films continue the conversations about systemic inequalities where missing girls and women of color are ignored. Beauvais will also star in and executive produce a Terry McMillian Presents Lifetime Original Movie.

Apple TV+ mystery thriller “Sunny” premieres with the first two episodes on Wednesday, July 10, followed by new episodes every week through September 4. The darkly comic series stars Rashida Jones (“On the Rocks”), who also serves as executive producer, along with stars Hidetoshi Nishijima, Joanna Sotomura, Judy Ongg, YOU, annie the clumsy and Jun Kunimura.

“The Big Door Prize” returns for a second season on Wednesday, April 24. The Apple TV+ comedy follows the residents of Deerfield as the Morpho machine readies them for the mysterious “next stage.”

Three-part docuseries “99,” celebrating the year Manchester United made a remarkable comeback, is set to premiere Friday, May 17 on Prime Video. The series tells the story of how, in 1999, Manchester United made football history by winning the Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League.

Medical transformation series, “Botched Bariatrics,” featuring patients suffering complications from their bariatric surgery, premieres Wednesday, May 15 at 10p on TLC.

Season two of Peacock’s “We Are Lady Parts” premieres Thursday, May 30. Educational activist Malala Yousafzai and comedian Meera Syal are set to guest star.

COMING UP

“Call Me Country: Beyonce & Nashville’s Renaissance” starts streaming Friday, April 26 on Max. Produced by the CNN FlashDocs unit, the special explores the conversation about what defines country music.

A second HBO special from comedian and actress Nikki Glaser debuts Saturday, May 11 at 10p. “Nikki Glaser: Someday You’ll Die” was taped in December 2023 in Seattle. “I’m so grateful that once again, HBO has put their trust in me to say what I feel into a microphone while wearing a tiny dress,” said Glaser. “Someday I’ll die, and when I do, I hope I’m remembered for this performance (and this dress).”

The 77th Annual DGA Awards have been set for February 8, 2025 at the Beverly Hilton. That puts the ceremony three weeks and a day ahead of the Oscars.

FOX News’ Lawrence Jones will visit diners in the blue wall states of Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania for the “FOX & Friends” “Breakfast with Friends” series starting Tuesday, April 23rd. Jones will speak with patrons about the issues shaping voters’ decisions this election year.

Actor, filmmaker and producer Mark Duplass (“The Morning Show”), will receive the Excellence in Acting Award during his previously announced “Innovation Talk” at SeriesFest. The event takes place May 1-5 in Denver.

Comcast has introduced two new prepaid services, Now Internet and Now Mobile, featuring all-in pricing, with no contracts or credit checks. Customers can sign up, pause, or cancel online, anytime. “Consumers have told us they want low-cost, easy-to-use connectivity and entertainment options that deliver the same reliability and consistency of our leading Xfinity services,” said Dave Watson, President and CEO of Connectivity and Platforms, Comcast. “With NOW, we’ve developed a new product construct from the ground up to be simple and easy for anybody who wants Internet, mobile or TV on their own terms without sacrificing quality.”

Instagram is rolling out a new photo sharing app, Notes, in select markets. “We’re in the early stages of experimenting with a dedicated space for photo and text content with TikTok Notes,” posted the company on X. “TikTok Notes is available for download and limited testing in Australia and Canada.” According to the app stores’ description, “TikTok Notes is a lifestyle platform that offers informative photo-text content about people’s lives, where you can see individuals sharing their travel tips and daily recipes.”

Yahoo and AdImpact are partnering to offer better targeting and differentiated political viewership audiences for activation across local and national campaigns this election year, by blending Yahoo DSP’s streaming targeting with AdImpact’s data to better reach politically inclined viewers. The partnership will tap into a new viewership targeting capability that enables political advertisers to reach their potential voters more effectively and at the right cadence. “As the road to November heats up, there’s a significant untapped opportunity for political campaigns to reach voters with CTV,” said Elizabeth Herbst-Brady, Chief Revenue Officer, Yahoo. “Our partnership with AdImpact will give campaigns and advertisers alike the ability to better reach their intended audiences and control frequency through the Yahoo DSP and not inundate viewers.”

EarthX and streamer Dailymotion are launching a sustainability-focused network on April 22, Earth Day. Programming will include EarthX series like “Texas Gator Savers” and “EarthX News,” along with Dailymotion programming focused on people, landscapes and wildlife. “Through this collaboration, we can amplify our reach and deliver impactful content that celebrates the majesty of our planet while highlighting the urgent need for conservation efforts,” said Dan Russell, President of EarthxTV.

SPORTS ROUNDUP

The Boston Celtics are headed to the 2024 NBA Playoffs beginning Sunday, April 21, and NBC Sports Boston will bring fans the live call of several first round games, one-hour Pregame and Postgame shows, and additional comprehensive coverage throughout the postseason. The Celtics are the #1 seed in the Eastern Conference and will take on the #8 seed in the first round of Playoffs. NBC Sports Boston’s live game coverage will be led by play-by-play announcer Mike Gorman, marking his final Playoffs series after 43 years in the role.

Isabella Echeverri is joining Telemundo Deportes’ commentary team as a network soccer analyst, starting Saturday, April 21 at 8:25a on Telemundo for Premier League’s Everton v. Nottingham Forest. The former Colombian professional footballer made her debut performance on the network during the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023.

The Basketball Tournament, a $1 million winner-take-all summer event, struck a multi-year media rights agreement with FOX Sports to carry games on FOX, FS1, and FS2. “We are thrilled to make FOX Sports the new home of TBT,” said TBT co-owner and Golden State Warriors guard Chris Paul. “The event has experienced tremendous growth these past few years and this agreement will take it to new heights.”

MoonBall Media, led by former World Series Champion Eric Hosmer producer and former player Anthony Seratelli, launched in February with original unscripted programming, a weekly podcast, social media content and FAST channels. Seratelli shares how the two athletes transformed their professional baseball careers into a multi-faceted media company, in Cynsiders.

Monumental Sports Network scored record viewership for Tuesday’s game between the Washington Capitals and Philadelphia Flyers. The telecast was the most watched single-game regular season broadcast since the network rebranded from NBC Sports Washington and relaunched in September 2023. It also marked the most watched regular season game on either network since February 1, 2022.

John Forslund will call the action with commentary from Darren Pang and Jennifer Botterill. The Basketball Africa League announced the 52 players from 11 countries across Africa, Europe and the US who will compete in the 2024 Basketball Africa League’s Nile Conference group phase, which will take place from Friday, April 19-Saturday, April 27 at the Hassan Mostafa Indoor Sports Complex in Cairo. Keshet International has acquired the exclusive worldwide distribution rights to the documentary “2024: 100 Days That Rocked the Royals” from ITN Productions. Commissioned by UK’s Channel 5, the film follows the series of crises that hit the royal family in the first three months of 2024.

Orange is launching the third season of its flagship program “Y’Africa,” airing weekly on 15 national TV channels across Africa. The new season is dedicated to the journeys of 28 rising sporting talents from 12 countries.

NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises unveiled a new structure for Telemundo Studios designed to boost its scripted content. Ronald Day has been elevated to President, Entertainment and Chief Content Officer, and Javier Pons has been appointed Executive Vice President of Telemundo Studios. Most recently, Pons was General Director of Globomedia.

James Warburton left his job as Managing Director and CEO of Australia’s Seven West Media early, and has been replaced by SWM CFO Jeff Howard. Warburton had planned to step down in June.
