Netflix added 9.3 million subscribers – versus the 4.9 million Wall Street had projected – to hit 269.6 million in the quarter ended March 31. The company also beat analysts’ forecasts with $9.37 billion in revenue. But the streamer said it planned to stop reporting subscriber totals starting with its first quarter results in 2025. “In our early days, when we had little revenue or profit, membership growth was a strong indicator of our future potential,” said the streamer in a letter to shareholders. “Now we’re generating very substantial profit and free cash flow (FCF). We are also developing new revenue streams like advertising and our extra member feature, so memberships are just one component of our growth. In addition, as we’ve evolved our pricing and plans from a single to multiple tiers with different price points depending on the country, each incremental paid membership has a very different business impact.”
Netflix renewed “The Witcher” for a fifth – and final – season, as production on season four of the fantasy drama commences. “It’s official, ‘The Witcher’ season 4 is in production,” posted Netflix on X, along with a video of a cast table read. “But that’s not all, we’re already planning season 5, which will be the final season and bring this epic show to a fitting conclusion. See you on The Continent.”
CBS’s “Elsbeth” will be back for a second season. “’Elsbeth’ has charmed audiences with its singular blend of delightful humor, distinctive ‘how-done-it’ storytelling and the inventive, brilliant quirkiness of Elsbeth Tascioni,” said Amy Reisenbach, President of CBS Entertainment. The series is also delivering 11 million viewers after 35 days of viewing, up 52% from time slot predecessor “CSI: Vegas.”
CBS’ “The Late Show” will air live from Chicago during the Democratic National Convention, holding down in the Windy City from August 19-22. “I started my career in Chicago, let’s see if I can end it there,” said host Stephen Colbert.
MediaCo Holding, operator of New York’s WQHT-FM (Hot 97) station, has acquired Estrella Media’s network, content, digital and commercial operations, including the EstrellaTV network and its linear and digital video content business, and FAST channels EstrellaTV, Estrella News, Cine EstrellaTV and Estrella Games. “This combination of tested media brands and talented teams will fuel growth of content and distribution for the benefit of our multicultural audiences,” said interim CEO Jacqueline Hernández. “We believe this combination is the first step in building a unique multicultural media company that will reach diverse US audiences wherever they choose to consume content and create value for marketers working to reach these important audiences.”
Marketing partnership of the week goes to Flonase and Shondaland, the makers of “Bridgerton,” for content that’s getting raves from viewers. As the Netflix show heads to its season three premiere on May 16, featuring Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton, aka “Polin,” a “Bridgerton”-like video created by the brands shows members of the Ton overcome with pollen as they stroll through gardens. The group looks for a cure at a nearby apothecary, only to discover it won’t be ready for 200 years. “’Bridgerton’ has such an incredibly engaged audience and we are constantly looking for ways to deliver fun and delightful moments,” said Chris Diiorio, CMO at Shondaland. “Partnering with Flonase on this campaign provided the perfect, unexpected collaboration that celebrates ‘Polin’ season.”
Oh, Canada! The Writers Guild of Canada has called for a strike authorization vote as it nears the April 23 deadline for its negotiations with the Canadian Media Producers Association. The current contract expired on December 31, and the two sides have been in talks since October. Compensation and AI protection remain sticking points.
Donald Trump isn’t the only one being admonished to keep quiet in his hush money trial. Judge Juan Merchan chastised the media for publishing details about a seated juror, who had to be dismissed after she said the publicity prevented her from being able to be impartial. “There’s a reason why this is an anonymous jury, and we’ve taken the measures we have taken,” Justice Juan Merchan told the press. “It kind of defeats the purpose of that when so much information is put out there.” |

Ample Entertainment’s three-part wildlife reality competition show “The Hungry Games: Alaska’s Big Bear Challenge” landed an order from Peacock. The series, a co-production with Canada’s Love Nature that follows the bears of Alaska’s Katmai National Park as they bulk up for winter hibernation, will be narrated by Rhys Darby (“Flight of the Conchords”).
Netflix has ordered “America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders,” produced by One Potato Productions and Boardwalk Pictures in association with Campfire Studios, and follows the 2023-24 season. The new series comes after the squad ended its 16-year run on CMT with “Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making The Team.” “The kind of access and creative freedom we need to make the kind of work we want to make is not easy to come by – especially when dealing with a brand as large as the Dallas Cowboys,” said executive producer Greg Whiteley. “To their infinite credit, the Cowboys offered unfettered access for the year we filmed the DCC and left us alone. The result is an authentic portrait of one of the most storied and beloved institutions we have in American pop culture.”
Esquire article “The Redemption of Al Sharpton,” a profile of the civil rights activist and MSNBC host, has been acquired by ABC Signature to develop as a limited series. Deadline reports Anthony Anderson (“black-ish”) is expected to star as Sharpton and executive produce.
HBO and Bad Wolf (“Doctor Who”) are in the early stage of development on a series about disgraced, jailed art dealer Inigo Philbrick. Bad Wolf has grabbed rights to upcoming memoir All That Glitters, by Orlando Whitfield, a business partner of Philbrick.
Screen Australia and LA-based Dynamic Television (“Ginny & Georgia”) have launched the Dynamic Television Scripted Initiative. Tom Durant Pritchard (“The Crown”) has joined season five of Masterpiece drama “Miss Scarlet” (fka “Miss Scarlet and the Duke”), currently filming in Serbia. Pritchard’s character replaces William “The Duke” Wellington, who left with his portrayer, Stuart Martin.
Lifetime has extended its relationship with Garcelle Beauvais, who will executive produce two more “Black Girl Missing” movies. The films continue the conversations about systemic inequalities where missing girls and women of color are ignored. Beauvais will also star in and executive produce a Terry McMillian Presents Lifetime Original Movie.

“The Big Door Prize” returns for a second season on Wednesday, April 24. The Apple TV+ comedy follows the residents of Deerfield as the Morpho machine readies them for the mysterious “next stage.”
Three-part docuseries “99,” celebrating the year Manchester United made a remarkable comeback, is set to premiere Friday, May 17 on Prime Video. The series tells the story of how, in 1999, Manchester United made football history by winning the Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League.
Medical transformation series, “Botched Bariatrics,” featuring patients suffering complications from their bariatric surgery, premieres Wednesday, May 15 at 10p on TLC.

Instagram is rolling out a new photo sharing app, Notes, in select markets. “We’re in the early stages of experimenting with a dedicated space for photo and text content with TikTok Notes,” posted the company on X. “TikTok Notes is available for download and limited testing in Australia and Canada.” According to the app stores’ description, “TikTok Notes is a lifestyle platform that offers informative photo-text content about people’s lives, where you can see individuals sharing their travel tips and daily recipes.”

The Celtics are the #1 seed in the Eastern Conference and will take on the #8 seed in the first round of Playoffs. NBC Sports Boston’s live game coverage will be led by play-by-play announcer Mike Gorman, marking his final Playoffs series after 43 years in the role.
Isabella Echeverri is joining Telemundo Deportes’ commentary team as a network soccer analyst, starting Saturday, April 21 at 8:25a on Telemundo for Premier League’s Everton v. Nottingham Forest. The former Colombian professional footballer made her debut performance on the network during the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023.
