IN THE NEWS

All together now: As streaming surges, Nielsen announced it is unifying its streaming solutions under one banner, encompassing ad-supported and subscription-based service models across content, ads and platforms. “With this comprehensive suite of streaming measurement solutions, content creators, platforms, studios and advertisers will have an unprecedented view of who is streaming, what they’re watching, which platforms consumers are gravitating to and how much time they are spending with streaming content,” said Deirdre Thomas, Managing Director, U.S. audience measurement product strategy.

Tegna stations went dark this week for three million Dish TV customers in 53 markets when the companies couldn’t come to terms on a new retrans agreement. “Tegna is looking to sell its stations to the highest bidder and is simply trying to exploit Dish customers as a way to get the maximum price and further fatten their wallets,” said Brian Neyloin, Group President, Dish TV. Tegna’s take: “Dish has refused to reach a fair, market-based agreement with us based on the competitive terms we’ve used to reach deals with numerous other providers that reflect the current market.”

Just 36% of Americans say they have a “great deal” or “fair amount” of trust in what is reported in the news media, according to a new Gallup poll. That’s the second lowest on record, after 2016. There was a big difference in numbers between parties – 68% of Democrats polled said they trusted the media, while only 11% of Republicans did.

Omnicom cultural intelligence consultancy sparks & honey announced the launch of its Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Consulting Practice. The official rollout follows the recent appointment of Davianne Harris to the role of Chief Client Officer and Head of the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Practice in June. “For so long, DE&I was considered ancillary to an organization’s core business practices, but leaders now recognize that DE&I is a tangible and measured imperative that must be embedded within every aspect of an organization’s people, products, practices and partnerships,” said Terry Young, CEO, sparks & honey. “sparks & honey has been known for its disruptive approach to consulting with solutions designed to help clients transform their organizations. We are now focused on being known for our inclusive consulting as well, with offerings designed to enable systematic change.”

TECH TALK

Advertisers recognize the opportunity afforded by addressable TV, with 32% considering addressable TV to be a must-buy (+7% points YoY), according to a WarnerMedia study conducted in partnership with Advertiser Perceptions. Other takeaways include:
· Despite the growing adoption of addressable over the years, there is still no majority consensus on the definition for addressable TV, although advertisers tend to define addressable holistically.
· Advertisers perceive CTV and addressable TV similarly, suggesting the complementary nature of these media vs. one channel being an “either/or” media investment – both offer increased ad relevance, incremental reach, and reliable audience targeting. Those who say CTV is most important to achieving their goals agree that addressable TV’s ability to test and learn is its top benefit. Those who say linear is most important to achieving their goals agree that addressable TV’s ability to deliver more relevant ads is its top benefit.

Video software provider Synamedia has launched Synamedia OTT ServiceGuard, giving media companies a tool to address the weaknesses that make it easy for pirates to not only steal content but also entire OTT services, including redistributing directly from the service provider’s content delivery network. “We have set ourselves a challenge of educating the industry about the scale of OTT piracy,” said Nitsan Baider, Director of Product Management for Security Solutions at Synamedia. “Many rights holders and operators mistakenly believe that current approaches – including DRM, client hardening and concurrency limits – provide adequate content protection. Without sugar coating the truth, they are mistaken. Up to now, technologies have barely made a dent in OTT piracy because the protocol is broken. Synamedia OTT ServiceGuard is designed to safeguard against those risks.”

Entertainment content and technology company Trioscope, recognized for its proprietary animated drama engine, has raised $5.25M led by BITKRAFT Ventures, a venture capital firm focused on gaming, esports, and interactive media. Sony Innovation Fund, Transcend Fund, Cordillera Investment Partners and Thomas Vu/Axis Mundi Capital participated. Trioscope will use the investment to expand its US and worldwide business; focus on boosting its original IP and content; and productize its enhanced animation technology toolset for global third-party creators and studios to produce content through licensing agreements.
