Conversion: In web media, a conversion is the achievement of a quantifiable goal. Ad clicks, sales, and sign-ups are examples of conversions.
Uh oh. Yahoo confirmed that, in 2014, hackers stole information on at least 500 million users. It’s one of the biggest data breaches in history – possibly the biggest. According to sources who spoke to Recode before Yahoo officially confirmed the hack, the company is prepping for an inevitable law-enforcement investigation and, quite possibly, lawsuits. But one of the biggest concerns for Yahoo is that that this news has come at a particularly inopportune moment: Verizon is currently in the process of acquiring the company for $4.83 billion, and news of the data breach could affect the telco’s valuation of the company. One troublesome note: Yahoo apparently didn’t tell Verizon about the hack, despite having known about it for almost two months. In August, Vice’s Motherboard reported on a Russian cybercriminal named “Peace” who claimed to be selling credentials from 200 million-plus Yahoo users, including usernames, easily-decrypted passwords, and personal info. But Yahoo had never confirmed the report, saying only that it was investigating its legitimacy. It’s safe to say that its legitimacy has been confirmed.
Recode reports that Verizon is in advanced talks to acquire Vessel, the video startup founded by former Hulu CEO Jason Kilar. Vessel has raised over $130 million since its launch in 2016, but the company has struggled. As Recode notes, Vessel has floundered in its efforts to recruit YouTube stars. That’s why, according to Recode, Vessel has been working on a new product of late. One Recode source called the new product “Snapchat-like,” complete with image filters and other features.

Twitter announced that mobile app install ads can now be converted to appear natively within the apps in the Twitter Audience Platform. (That’s Twitter’s ad tech platform, which covers numerous outside apps.) According to the company, mobile app advertisers just need to click a box labeled “native”; after that, their ad will be syndicated natively across Twitter’s app partners. Vimeo is continuing on with its efforts to showcase female talent. The video site announced three new projects featuring women stars and directors. The new productions include Marina Abramovic in Brazil: The Space In Between, a feature-length doc from Marina Abramovic; a stand-up comedy special from the South African comedian Loyiso Gola; and 555, a short-form comedy series from Kate Berlant (Netflix’s The Characters) and John Early (Other People). The projects come as part of Vimeo’s Share the Screen initiative, a program designed to provide opportunities to female filmmakers and other talent.
Perhaps the “TV” in AwesomenessTV is a little too limiting. The Gen Z-oriented digital media company has partnered with the music services company Kobalt Music Group. Under the new pact, AwesomenessTV will identify music talent and connect them with Kobalt’s publishing, label services and neighboring rights. (Kobalt’s deals with musicians allow the artists to maintain ownership of their content.) With the new deal in place, AwesomenessTV will launch Awesomeness Music, an ad-supported brand designed to help artists to grow their fan-bases. Under the deal, Kobalt and AwesomenessTV have established a revenue-sharing agreement. The L.A. band Los 5 is the first group to sign on under the new partnership.
Latin Everywhere, a U.S. company that distributes Spanish-language movies and TV shows on digital platforms, has changed its name to Pongalo. (That translates to “play it” or “put it.”) The name-change represents a streamlining effort: ‘Pongalo’ was already the name of the L.A. company’s YouTube channel and OTT Hispanic entertainment service. Along with the name change, the company also announced that it has raised new funding from Digital Bridge and Canyon Creek Capital. (The company didn’t name the exact dollar amount, but said it was in the seven figures.) Along with the new funding, Canyon Creek’s Managing Partner Buck Jordan will gain a seat on Pongalo’s board of advisers, joining former MTV Networks Vice Chairman Herb Scannell.
There’ a new addition to Discover. Complex, Verizon-Hearst’s millennial-oriented digital publisher with a focus on fashion, music and pop culture, now has a channel on Snapchat’s platform for publisher-controlled channels. The New York-based publisher says it has hired eight staffers to work on the channel. Complex’s Rawan Eewshah, who has previously held positions at BuzzFeed and Good Morning America, will oversee the channel as Deputy Editor.

The video marketing company Pixability has made a new promotion. Theresa Moore has been upped to VP of Platform Partnerships. In the new role, Moore will oversee the strategic expansion of the company’s partnerships with premium video platforms. Meanwhile, the data analyst and video strategist Jackie Swansburg Paulino has been elevated to Moore’s now-vacated position, VP of Customer Success. She previously held the title of Senior Director of Customer Success.
