09/24/21: The WNBA wrapped up the season on a high note

The WNBA regular season wrapped up with big gains for the league on ESPN networks, as matchups delivered an average of 306,000 viewers. That is good for a 49% rise over 2020 regular season numbers and is up 24% over 2019. The postseason is now underway, with the semifinals set to run Sept. 28-Oct.8 leading into the WNBA Finals Presented by YouTube TV, with Game 1 on Oct. 10, at 3p on ABC. The WNBA Finals will move up to start on October 6 or 8 if both semifinals end in three or four games, respectively. Every game of the postseason – a potential 19 total games – will be available across ABC, ESPN and ESPN2, with all games available to stream in the ESPN App.

PROGRAMMING

Tennis Channel serves up coverage of the fourth edition of Laver Cup this weekend in Boston, and running through Sept. 26. The event, postponed last year due to COVID-19, pits a team of Europe’s top tennis players against the rest of the world’s best. The first match takes place at at 12:30p with the network set to show approximately 25 hours of live Laver Cup tennis this year, with another 20 hours dedicated to same-day encores each evening. Steve Weissman will host daily lead-in show Tennis Channel Live at the Laver Cup, which runs ahead of each of the five Laver Cup sessions across three days.

SHOWTIME Sports Documentary Films announced Passion Play: Russell Westbrook, described as “an intensely personal examination of one of the most dynamic and complex figures in professional sports.” The documentary premiers Oct. 15 at 9p on SHOWTIME and is executive produced by Westbrook and Donnell Beverly.

After four weeks on the road to kick off the 2021 college football season, Big Noon Kickoff will hit Madison in Week 5 for Michigan/Wisconsin on Oct. 2. Host Rob Stone and analysts Brady Quinn, Reggie Bush, Matt Leinart and Bob Stoops will be live on-site beginning at 10a ahead of the Big Noon Saturday game of the week.

Hockey hits Turner Sports’ networks a little early as TNT will present an NHL preseason doubleheader on Sept. 30, featuring the Bruins/Flyers at 7:30p and Golden Knights/Kings at 10a from Vivint Smart Home Arena in Salt Lake City. Kenny Albert, Eddie Olczyk and Keith Jones will provide game commentary for Flyers/Bruins, and Brendan Burke, Darren Pang and Jackie Redmond will be on the call for Golden Knights/Kings. Host Liam McHugh, analysts Anson Carter and Rick Tocchet, and contributor Tarik El-Bashir will provide studio coverage.

Major League Baseball announced the Arizona Fall League’s 2021 schedule, with the 90-game regular season set to open on Oct. 13. The League’s annual Fall Stars Game will be played on Nov. 13 while the AFL Championship Game is scheduled for Nov. 20, carried on MLB Network, as well as streaming on MLB.com and in the MLB App.

ESPN will celebrate 20 years of Pardon the Interruption with a one-hour PTI20 television special as well as a four-part ESPN Daily podcast highlighting the weekday sports debate and discussion show featuring co-hosts Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon. The documentary-style television special will premiere Sept. 28, at 7p, while the ESPN Daily podcast series hosted by Pablo Torre will debut a new episode each Saturday from Oct. 2-23.

The Canadian Olympic Committee and Canadian Paralympic Committee announced that athletic apparel brand lululemon will now become the new Official Outfitter of Team Canada. The Philadelphia 76ers announced a new partnership with Crypto.com, designating the crypto company as the team’s official jersey patch partner. The partnership is also Crypto.com’s first in the NBA. To tip off the partnership, the 76ers will be launching their first-ever non-fungible token (NFT), available for fans to purchase through Crypto.com NFT.

DAZN and pledge-based social impact football movement Common Goal teamed up with a mission to “drive long-term, solution-oriented change around critical issues at the intersection of sport and society.” DAZN is making a multi-million dollar pledge to Common Goal alongside a 1% global employee time and resource commitment in a long-term partnership that will collectively focus on three fundamental and deep-rooted issues, within and beyond football: gender equity, racial justice, and cultural diversity.As part of its pledge, DAZN committed to leveraging its storytelling and creative expertise to examine the defined issues as they relate to sport, while showcasing solution-oriented goals and actions via co-branded and co-produced content with Common Goal.

Playfly Sports struck a multi-year deal with Pac-12 Networks to become the exclusive third-party seller of the network’s advertising inventory, running through the 2023-24 school year. Playfly will sell the Pac-12 Networks’ advertising inventory through its Home Team Sports subsidiary.

The National Hockey League and Fanatics announced the opening of the new 9,000 square foot NHL Shop flagship store in New York City. The store was re-located from Midtown to Manhattan West. “We are thrilled to bring a new NHL Shop flagship store to Manhattan West, the site of our new corporate home in a burgeoning part of New York City,” said Brian Jennings, NHL Chief Brand Officer and Senior Executive Vice President. “Our vision was to build a multi-sensory hockey experience that emotionally connects our fans to the game, teams and players they cheer for. Callaway officially entered the Daily Fantasy Sports space through a partnership with FanDuel that will see them sponsor three Ryder Cup DFS contests. Callaway will be sponsoring multiple daily fantasy sports (DFS) contests that include: Callaway Ryder Cup Eagle Contest and on the first day a Callaway Bonus around the performance of their golfers as well as a Callaway Pick ‘Em Contest around Ryder Cup action and questions featuring Callaway golfers (Xander Schauffele and John Rahm).

The Washington Football Team announced the launch of a partnership at FedExField with Grubhub, that marks the first time a professional sports property has partnered with Grubhub and is designed to enhance and expedite the ordering experience and payment process for in-stadium dining at FedExField. As part of this partnership, Grubhub has created a custom ordering experience specifically for FedExField that fans can access through the Grubhub app. Utilizing geo location, Grubhub’s technology enables fans to place an order with select vendors near their seats, pay directly through the Grubhub app, and pick up their orders through designated concession lanes. Approximately twenty vendors throughout FedExField will be available for ordering on Grubhub.

ESPORTS

Misfits Gaming Group announced a $35 million investment round led by The E.W. Scripps Company. As part of the investment, Scripps also will appoint a designee to Misfits’ board of directors. Scripps will invest $10 million into MGG’s global esports organization, which includes its two Florida esports franchises. With its investment, Scripps has the power to distribute MGG’s content through its linear and over-the-top television platforms in Florida and across the U.S.

King unveiled pop music star Doja Cat and NFL champ Rob Gronkowski as celebrity competitors in the Candy Crush All Stars U.S. tournament. The event will be hosted by Khloe? Kardashian.

Valve locked in a partnership with esports merchandising company We Are Nations to produce and distribute a line of merchandise for Dota 2’s The International 2021. We Are Nations will be charged with creating official branded apparel and accessories related to the event, which runs Oct. 7-17.

Esports Collegiate is teaming with eFuse to produce ESC events for the 2021-22 academic year. eFuse will produce, stream, and coordinate 280 competitive matches for the conference’s 14 teams across the three-month season. ESC currently sees teams compete in Rocket League, League of Legends, and Overwatch.

AT&T is dialing up a deal with content creator Tim “TimTheTatman” Betar, collaborating on content, events and innovation designed to showcase AT&T’s 5G capabilities.The collaboration activated next week when AT&T and TimTheTatman embark on the AT&T 5G Roadshow on Sept. 28 at 1:30p.

The National Basketball Players Association named Tamika Tremaglio as its next Executive Director.
