   IN THE NEWS

TikTok’s US employees don’t need to panic (yet) about the law that calls for the Chinese-owned video app to be banned due to security concerns. “Your employment, pay and benefits are secure, and our offices will remain open, even if this situation hasn’t been resolved before the January 19 deadline,” wrote Nicky Raghavan, TikTok’s global head of HR, in a message to US employees that was obtained by The New York Times. “The bill is not written in a way that impacts the entities through which you are employed, only the US user experience.” The law, enacted last year, calls for ByteDance-owned TikTok to be banned unless it is sold to a non-Chinese owner.

The write stuff: Competing for the WGA award for drama series are “The Boys,” “The Diplomat,” “Fallout,” “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” and “Shōgun.” Comedy series contenders include “The Bear,” “Abbott Elementary,” “Hacks,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “What We Do in the Shadows.” Winners will be announced February 15 during ceremonies at NYC’s Edison Ballroom and the Beverly Hilton in LA.

A Fubo subscriber is seeking a class action suit against Disney for alleged antitrust violations. The proposed lawsuit claims Disney’s ownership of ESPN “enables it to extract monopoly rents” by forcing streaming services to include non-ESPN content to access the sports channel. “These anticompetitive tactics restrain competition from rivals to Disney’s Hulu in the SLPTV market and force independent streaming services such as Fubo to charge higher prices to their customers than they would in a free market,” reads the complaint. Fubo’s own suit against Disney was settled with Disney’s decision to merge its Hulu + Live TV service with Fubo.

Sinclair and NBC announced a multi-year agreement that renews station affiliation agreements for all 21 of Sinclair’s owned and/or operated NBC affiliates. “These agreements reflect the mutual value and shared success between Sinclair and NBC,” said Will Bell, SVP, Head of Distribution and Network Relations, Sinclair. “It underscores the strength of our partnership and the unique role our stations play in delivering compelling content, trusted journalism, and vital services to local communities.”

OpenAI is underwriting four new Axios newsrooms as part of a broader content-sharing and technology deal. As part of the three-year deal, OpenAI will fund Axios’ expansion into Pittsburgh; Kansas City, Missouri; Boulder, Colorado; and Huntsville, Alabama. ChatGPT will use Axios journalism to answer user queries with attributed summaries, quotes and links to Axios stories, and Axios can access OpenAI’s technology to build its own AI products, processes, and systems.

Altice USA, the parent company of Optimum, reached a $119.5 million settlement with West Virginia over consumer complaints about the company’s quality of service. “This is years in the making and a big win for the consumers in West Virginia,” said then-Attorney General, now Governor Patrick Morrisey on Friday. “My office worked tirelessly to resolve this to ensure consumers in the state receive the service from providers they deserve.”

ALLBLK is now available as an ad-free add-on to Philo subscriptions for $7/month. The AMC Networks streaming service is dedicated to Black voices and talent.

Spectrum opened applications for the next class of Spectrum Scholars and will award 15 college students $20,000 each in scholarships. The students will participate in a two-year professional development program and intern with Spectrum.
