IN THE NEWS
AT&T and Discovery Inc. grabbed the headlines Monday morning of Upfront week with the announcement of a $43 billion deal. AT&T plans to spin off its WarnerMedia assets to be combined with Discovery, forming a new standalone company. Discovery CEO David Zaslav will run the show. In making the announcement, the companies noted the deal will accelerate plans for streaming services, unite complementary content strengths, and create at least $3 billion in expected cost synergies annually.
The surprise deal was negotiated over the weekend, said Zaslav in an early morning Zoom press call with AT&T CEO John Stankey. “I just texted John, and we ended up on a two-hour conversation about the future of media,” Zaslav told journalists. “We think together, the combination makes us the best media company in the world.” Zaslav added that the company will spend $20 billion on content. As far as possible employee exits, “The focus will be on talking to everybody at Discovery and everybody at WarnerMedia and we will be trying to figure out how to get the best people to stay,” said Zaslav.
One of those eyeing the door may be WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar, according the The New York Times. Kilar, who joined the company last year, sent a memo to staff saying, “I feel like the luckiest person on the planet. I am so thankful for all that you do and for every precious day I get to be on this team in this role,” but has hired lawyers to negotiate his exit, per to the paper. During his call with reporters, Zaslav called Kilar “a fantastic talent.”
AT&T acquired Time Warner for $85 billion three years ago. The new transaction is anticipated to close in mid-2022, subject to approvals.
Disney is launching a new curated content brand, Onyx Collective, focused on content from creators of color and underrepresented voices. Freeform President Tara Duncan will lead the brand, formerly called Disney General Entertainment Content’s BIPOC Creator Initiative. The first two projects are Questlove’s feature documentary “Summer of Soul (…or, When the Revolution Could Not be Televised,” and docu-series “The 1619 Project,” produced by Oprah Winfrey and Lionsgate.
Judges have been named for Fox reality competition “Domino Masters,” slated for the 2021-22 season. Actress/mathematician Danica McKellar (“The Wonder Years”), former NFL player Vernon Davis ,and domino artist Steven Price will oversee the toppling.

UPFRONTS
“At Fox, we have the biggest brands in news, sports, entertainment, and streaming, which deliver the audiences, reach and impact advertisers seek, but are struggling to find, in today’s marketplace,” said Marianne Gambelli, President of Advertising Sales. “Along with great content, we are investing in and delivering ad innovations that make our clients media dollars work harder and allows for our partners brand messages to breakthrough across our portfolio.”
Among the stats noted during the presentation: Fox engages 200 million viewers across screens and genres, from television to a digital footprint of roughly 1 billion streams. Tubi, with a median age of 37, “complements Fox’s portfolio and its unique audience replaces cable for many viewers with an always-on supply of on-demand content, capturing young cord cutters and cord-nevers,” added Gambelli.
Ad opportunities include Fox Entertainment’s Absolute A’s and Fast Break ad formats to deliver more relevant ad experiences; planning and optimization tools; and a suit of capabilities, including One Fox and Fox Next, that deliver better results for advertisers than traditional methods.
Fox also introduced the Portfolio Partner Hub, a media platform that provides clients with relevant information from the sports, entertainment, news, and streaming verticals. The Upfront Hub includes highlights from each brand’s upfront events, and will be part of the division’s partner portal.
On the programming front, Fox Entertainment CEO Charlie Collier teased an unscripted series with Super Bowl champ Tom Brady….The net ordered competition format “Alter Ego,” featuring contestants who “won’t perform as themselves. Rather, they’ll be given the chance to show how they’ve always wanted to be seen, creating their dream avatar Alter Ego to reinvent themselves and perform like never before.” The show will air after “The Masked Singer” on Wednesdays…Country music drama series “Monarch” premieres Sunday, January 30 after the NFC Championship Game…”The Great North” was renewed for season three, “The Masked Singer” for season six, “The Resident” for season five, “9-1-1” for season five and “9-1-1: Lone Star” for season three.
At NBCU’s Upfront presentation, it was revealed that cover bands will compete for $10,000 on “Clash of the Cover Bands” (wt). Hosted by DJ Stephen “tWitch” Boss, judges for the show will include Meghan Trainor, Adam Lambert and Ester Dean. Exec producer is Jimmy Fallon. And speaking of Fallon, he’s not quitting his night job – NBC officially renewed “The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon” for five more years.
The Games will go on, said NBC, as it touted its bustling sports season. With just six months between the Summer and Winter Olympics, and the Super Bowl in February, “NBC will be bringing all of it to America,” said sportscaster MikeTurico. All of which offers NBC a prime opportunity to launch its midseason shows, noted Susan Rovner, Chairman, Entertainment Content for Television & Streaming.
It’s not just world-class athletes who will be showcased on NBC. “Olympic Dreams Featuring Jonas Brothers,” a one-hour special featuring the pop star Jonas Brothers pursuing their Olympic dreams, premieres Wednesday, July 21 at 8p – two days before the Opening Ceremony of the Games. Joe, Kevin and Nick will be trained by some of Team USA’s best athletes as the brothers compete against each other.
Among other NBC Upfront highlights, Kevin Hart shared the news that Snoop Dogg will be hosting a show about the world’s dumbest criminals, and that he and the rapper will host a comedy sports news show currently in development.

TECH TALK
Parler, banned by Amazon, Apple and Google after the January 6 attack on the Capitol, returned to the Apple App store on Monday – but in a version that excludes some content Parler otherwise allows. “The entire Parler team has worked hard to address Apple’s concerns without compromising our core mission,” said Parler interim CEO Mark Meckler. “Anything allowed on the Parler network but not in the iOS app will remain accessible through our web-based and Android versions. This is a win-win for Parler, its users, and free speech.” Apple objected to content like Nazi imagery, but Parler says its algorithm is now able to detect violent or inciting content, “while still preserving user privacy.”
