NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS


Fusion
will premiere five new original series on SnapChat this year for the instant-photo sharing app’s Discover media platform. The first series to debut will be a second season of Outpost, a docu-series that mixes adventure travel with investigative journalism and available on SnapChat on April 22. The other four series to launch in 2015 include: fashion history show Weird Threads; Science Fiction/Science Fact; traditional craftsperson spotlight series The Artisans; world capital exploration show Capitals; and song and lyrics series Off the Record. “We understand that millennials consume content without border and SnapChat Discover has been a critical platform in the growth and development of Fusion’s global audience,” network CEO Isaac Lee said. Since SnapChat first revealed Discover in January, Fusion has rolled out News in a Snap and a first-look for the music video Juicy Wiggle.

Endemol Beyond USA partnered with Porterhouse Media to bring back Fear Factor in a new digital series on the show’s YouTube and social media channels. The series remixes some of Fear Factor’s most memorable moments to auto-tuned mashups by DJ Steve Porter. Porter, creator of Porterhouse Media, is an international artist, producer and DJ known for starting the viral video remix trend with videos such as “Rap Chop” and “Press Hop.” “This is the next generation of ‘Fear Factor,’ produced specifically for the digitally-savvy, millennial audience,” Endemol Beyond USA President Will Keenan said. “We’ve worked with the legendary remix artist Steve Porter to create bite-sized, ‘internet-friendly’ content that our YouTube, Facebook and OTT viewers are sure to enjoy.” New videos will post every Friday online.

VC FUNDING + INVESTORS


Vessel,
the new creator-focused video venture from former Hulu CEO Jason Kilar, landed a total of $57 million for a round of Series B funding. Led by Institutional Venture Partners, the new funds bring Vessel to a whopping $134.5 million. The new round also included investors from Benchmark, Greylock Partners and Bezos Expeditions

What was one social initiative that really challenged you but turnout a success?
At Discovery Communications and TLC, we’re always stretching the bounds of technology and the viewing experience and, while it was several years ago, I still vividly recall the very first time we featured live Tweets on air in primetime. It was nerve wracking, but ultimately a huge success thanks to lots of planning and collaboration across teams. Since then, bringing content from a range of social platforms in real-time to the screen is commonplace, although increasingly sophisticated.

What companies and brands do you see leading the way when it comes to social media?
Aside from TLC and our sister networks, I love Groupon’s voice on social media. Their personality allows them to systematically engage with their customers in a really fun, authentic way. As a brand on social media, being able to relate to and laugh with your audience is so great. #BananaBunker.

What is the best piece of advice you were given when it comes to social media? What about when it comes to your career?
In social media, knowing your audience respecting and protecting them. In terms of my career, knowing who you are, understanding your strengths and weaknesses and surrounding yourself with talented colleagues who compliment them.

Why do you think it’s important to have women in the digital industry, TV and beyond?
It’s important for women to be in every industry to ensure diversity  of voices and experiences  and to serve as role models for young girls anywhere. Lucky for me, I work with a lot of amazing women at TLC  many whom are my mentors.

What other honoree do you want to meet during the reception who was named a Top Woman in Digital?

What are three personalized and fun things that can be found in your office?

Netflix
’s push into international distribution has paid off, according to a new study from SNL Kagen. The streaming service’s global subscribers totaled 16.8 million at the end of last year, or 30.8 percent of its subscribers were located outside of the U.S.; compared to when it first internationally launched in 2010 with just 1.9 percent of its subs were in non-U.S. territories. Currently, Netflix is in more than 50 countries, and plans to increase that presence to 200 countries by the end of 2016. Canada holds the largest subscriber base outside of the U.S., existing within 30 percent of broadcast homes. SNL Kagen found that the international division is not profitable, and loses $159.8 million last year, although it’s an improvement over its 2013 loss of $274.3 million. Netflix estimates that the international division will be profitable overall by 2017.
