NBCUniversal execs touted the content giant’s reach, programming and ad tech at its Upfront presentation Monday, with Global Advertising & Partnerships Chairman Mark Marshall pointing to its One Platform Total Audience offering, which showed dramatic increases in sales (up to 38%) for customers like Domino’s, Amgen and others versus its traditional plans. “Results like this don’t just happen on their own,” he said. “They happen when you invest in premium content and data.” NBCUniversal Studio Group chairman and Chief Content Officer Donna Langley pointed to NBCU as a home for storytellers, and that the company gives a “voice to visionary artists with something to say.” NBCU News Group chairman Cesar Conde added that the news division’s audience trust and reach locally, nationally and internationally is important during these “momentous time,” adding that it is a “responsibility we take very seriously.”

Seth Meyers, who drew some of the biggest laughs during NBCU’s Upfront presentation, has renewed his contract to host “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” through 2028. His Sethmaker Shoemeyers production company also extended its agreement with Universal Studio Group to produce content across NBCU platforms. Meyers recently celebrated his 10-year anniversary as the host of the talk show.

Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, 20 years after their reality show “The Simple Life” bit the dust, are reportedly ready to pair up again. In a joint posting with Richie and the streamer on Instagram, they wrote: “New Era. Same Besties. Coming Soon to Peacock.” Seems a new reality show is coming to Peacock. “The Simple Life” lasted for five seasons (three on Fox, two on E!), and Hilton has done a reality series for Peacock – “Paris in Love” – which debuted its second season in November 2023. Richie has done voice work for animated series “HouseBroken” and was a recurring character on “Bless This Mess.”

Fox Entertainment unveiled its 2024-25 programming slate at its Upfront presentation at the Manhattan Center Monday, with new dramas, comedies and unscripted series joining the lineup. New shows include action-drama “Rescue: HI-Surf,” from executive producer John Wells; psychological crime procedural “Murder in a Small Town” and medical drama “Doc.” Returning series “Accused” will have new cast members Felicity Huffman, William H. Macy, Nick Cannon and Michael Chiklis. Comedian Denis Leary will star and executive produce single-camera comedy “Going Dutch,” while animated comedy “Universal Basic Guys,” will join the lineup. Fox also will air a new special event “The Real Full Monty” and “LEGO Masters” will air its annual multiple-night holiday event “LEGO Masters: Celebrity Holiday Bricktacular.” Additionally, FOX Sports’ presentation of Super Bowl LIX will air on Februray 9, followed by a special episode of “Rescue: HI-Surf.”

Fox Entertainment President of Scripted Programming Michael Thorn has given an early season-two renewal to upcoming animated comedy “Universal Basic Guys” ahead of the show’s premiere. The series, from creators Adam and Craig Malamut (“Sports Friends,” “Game of Zones,” “The Champions”), centers on two brothers, Mark and Hank Hoagies, who lose their jobs to automation and are given $3,000 a month in a new basic income program.

AI Q&A

Marketers – and everyone else, it seems – are exploring the potential and pitfalls of artificial intelligence. Douglas Montgomery, Senior Analyst at Aluma Insights, who will be moderating a discussion about the revolution in retail advertising at the Cynopsis Big TV Summit, answers some burning questions on the topic.

What should AI’s most important contribution to advertising be?
There is a famous phrase, now at least 150 years ago, that still holds true. John Wannamaker’s “half the money I spend on advertising is wasted; the trouble is I don’t know which half“. To solve this equation should be the goal of AI in advertising, less waste. Addressable advertising, the ability to deliver relevant messages to desired audiences at the right moment, should be greatly aided by AI technology. AI algorithms can analyze massive datasets to understand patterns and consumer behaviors on an individual level, which can then in turn be used by advertisers to create more effective ads. These ads can then be targeted much better to those consumers who are more likely to act on the ad.

What should marketers be most concerned about when it comes to AI?
There is considerable concern in the advertising industry (and the public at large) about the use and potential misuse of AI. Consumer privacy, pirating copyrighted materials, and many other issues may cause the use of AI to stall, or be used unseen. The present generally agreed-upon solution to this is for marketers to clearly state whether and how AI is being used. Much like customer service chatbots that tell consumers “I am a chatbot.”

Another major concern is accuracy. By now everyone has used AI tools like ChatGPT and found instances where the generated answer was wrong or misleading. This likely will get better going forward. However, complete accuracy (or even 99%) of the tool is likely to always remain slightly behind the use cases it is given. Artists will always push boundaries and it is doubtful the technology will be able to match the edge cases.

What future opportunities for the use of AI do you foresee?
In the immediate term, there will be an explosion of opportunities for people to use AI on an individual level, as a collaborative partner. At the recent Runway AI film festival, a panel of professional AI users “confessed” they use AI as a productive, non-judgmental, “partner” in creation. For them, AI technology is always available for an infinite number of tweaks, without the stress or pressure of a human partner. AI can also be very beneficial for the tedious task of work, like script drafting, image generation, pitch decks, etc. These are very time-consuming and for smaller entities the ability to gain efficiency here allows them to be competitive with larger ones.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Caravan has begun production on a new history documentary, “Field of Vampires,” for PBS’s “Secrets of the Dead,” which is slated for broadcast this fall. Abacus Media Rights, an Amcomri Entertainment company, has secured distribution rights to the rest of world, excluding the U.S., and has already made pre-sales to A+E Networks EMEA for Sky History in the UK and The History Channel in Poland and SVT in Sweden.

Returning FOX series for the 2024-25 season include dramas “9-1-1: Lone Star” (Season Five), “Accused” (Season Two), “Alert: Missing Persons Unit” (Season Three) and “The Cleaning Lady” (Season Four); comedy “Animal Control” (Season Three); animated series “Bob’s Burgers” (Season 15), “Family Guy” (Season 23), “The Great North” (Season Five), “Grimsburg” (Season Two), “Krapopolis” (Season Two) and “The Simpsons” (Season 36); and unscripted series “Crime Scene Kitchen” (Season Three), “The Floor” (Season Two), “Hell’s Kitchen” (Season 23), “LEGO Masters” (Season Five), “The Masked Singer” (Season 12), “MasterChef” (Season 15), “Name That Tune” (Season Five), “Next Level Chef” (Season Four) and “Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test” (Season Three).

“Queer Eye” star Antoni Porowski will have a star-studded lineup of celebrity friends to return home with on global culinary adventures in the docuseries “No Taste Like Home with Antoni Porowski.” Joining Porowski on the program, which will premiere in the spring of 2025 on National Geographic are: Awkwafina (“A Real Bug’s Life,” “Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens”), Henry Golding (“The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare,” “Crazy Rich Asians”), James Marsden (“Jury Duty,” “X-Men,”), Florence Pugh (“Oppenheimer,” “Don’t Worry Darling”), Issa Rae (“Insecure,” “American Fiction”) and Justin Theroux (“The Leftovers,” “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”).

COMING UP

Comedy Central’s half-hour special “The Daily Show Presents: Jordan Klepper Fingers The Pulse: Moscow Tools” will premiere on May 20 at 11:30p.

Ahead of the season two debut of “House of the Dragon,” on June 16, Max has announced opening submissions for the national “Beatport Presents House of the Dragon Remix Challenge,” with the electronic music hub. From May 13 through May 29, contestants can submit their remixes to the “House of the Dragon” theme song using stem files which can be downloaded from the Beatport-owned platform Loopcloud.com.

The Academy of Country Music, Prime Video, and Dick Clark Productions revealed their lineup of presenters for the 59th Academy of Country Music Awards on May 16. Alabama, BRELAND, Tyler Cameron, Jordan Davis, Sara Evans, Carin León, Little Big Town, Ashley McBryde, Dion and Rozene Pride, Noah Reid, Richard Sherman, Charissa Thompson, Randy Travis, and Clay Walker will be among the presenters at the awards. The ACM Awards Red Carpet Show will air at 7p on Prime Video and the Amazon Music channel on Twitch, will feature a special performance by Megan Moroney and be hosted by Amber Anderson and Kelly Sutton, Makho Ndlovu, and Elaina D. Smith. Katie Neal will serve as a correspondent from the carpet.

STREAMING

Streaming service TCLtv+ and Bloomberg Media have announced a joint content partnership that will bring two of its FAST channels – Bloomberg TV+ and Bloomberg Originals – to the TCLtv+ app beginning this month. The new AVOD titles will launch this spring. TCLtv+ is currently available to TCL Google TV and will soon be available on all other TCL Connected TVs in the United States and Canada. Audiences in the U.S. and Canada can find Bloomberg’s FAST Channels as featured new channels by going to the TCLtv+ app’s News & Opinion genre. The joint announcement comes as Bloomberg Media continues to expand its video offerings under the Bloomberg Originals brand including documentaries, video podcasts and smart series at the intersection of business and culture.

AMC Networks’ premium streaming service Shudder has acquired “The Demon Disorder” from Steven Boyle (“The Matrix” Trilogy, “The Hobbit” Trilogy, “King Kong”). The streamer also released the trailer for the film, which marks Boyle’s feature directorial debut. Starring John Noble (The Lord of the Rings Trilogy), Charles Cottier, Christian Willis, and Dirk Hunter, “The Demon Disorder” will make its exclusive streaming debut on Shudder in Fall 2024.

Hour-long news and interview program “The Leventhal Report” premiered Monday and will air live each weeknight at 7p on Newsmax2, Newsmax’s free streaming channel.

Mansa, a free streaming platform dedicated to showcasing global Black culture, has partnered with Ava DuVernay’s ARRAY Releasing to distribute a curated selection of ARRAY’s independent feature films directly to audiences via the Mansa Streaming Service and on the Mansa Mix FAST channel. The initial slate of titles available on Mansa in the coming weeks include: “This is the Life,” “They’ve Gotta Have Us,” “Jezebel,” “Residue” and “Burning Cane.”

SPORTS UPDATE

Roku has reached a multi-year deal for rights to Major League Baseball, offering a slate of 18 games – dubbed “Sunday Leadoff” – that will stream live and for free on its Roku Channel on Sundays from May 19 to September 15. The streamer also is offering an all-new MLB Zone to help baseball fans discover live and upcoming games, nightly recaps, highlights, a fully programmed MLB FAST channel, and more across its platform.

New York’s Hospital for Special Surgery remains the Official Hospital of the WNBA’s New York Liberty, after inking a new five-year partnership, extending their 19-season relationship with the team.

Wonderful Pistachios has been named the “Official Snack” of Combo Breaker, the second largest video game convention and tournament series in the U.S. dedicated to competitive fighting games. Wonderful Pistachios will engage with an estimated 7,000 attendees and online viewers at the convention, which will run May 24-26.

GOING GLOBAL

Studio 100 International has launched a new YouTube channel, “Studio 100 – Heroes of Childhood,” with a focus on teens and young adults, featuring familiar characters like “Maya the Bee,” “Heidi,” “Vic the Viking,” “Alice in Wonderland,” “Pinocchio,” and “Sindbad the Sailor.” New content will be available each week.

European independent animation studio and IP developer Millimages has launched the second season for its “Molang” YouTuber series, with a twist – Molang and side-kick co-host Piu Piu will speak English on all platforms. In the previous six seasons of the “Molang” TV series, characters were dialogue-free, only conversing in their own made-up language “Molanguese,” while the first Youtuber season was in Molanguese subtitled in English.

London independent studio Loud Minds has signed a partnership agreement with White Spark Pictures, the Australian factual independent studio. The company is currently in production on “Surviving Earth,” an eight-part series for Universal Television Alternative Studio, which visits eight dramatic mass extinction moments throughout Earth’s history.

Warner Bros. Animation, Cartoon Network Studios, and Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe is set to return to the Annecy International Animation Film Festival with slate of animated content including a first look at New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Animation’s original anime feature “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim,” the upcoming DC Studios/Max Original “Creature Commandos,” “The Amazing World of Gumball,” and the World Premiere of “The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie.”

Nicely Entertainment has acquired international rights to Lifetime’s soap opera spoof, “Ladies of the ‘80s: A Divas Christmas,” starring Loni Anderson (“WKRP in Cincinnati”), Morgan Fairchild (“Falcon Crest”), Linda Gray (“Dallas”), Donna Mills (“Knots Landing”) and Nicollette Sheridan (“Knots Landing”).

Globo signed an agreement with streaming platform Butaca TV in the U.S. and Latin America (except Brazil) to release telenovelas “Rock Story” and “Caribbean Flower,” and series “The Cariocas” and “Merciless.” In addition to Butaca TV, Globo productions are also available on Pluto TV and Vix, in Latin America (except Brazil), with increasing content updates.
