“It does feel like this is a moment,” said Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav during his company’s earnings call. Zaslav was referring to the changes roiling the streaming world that prompted Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery to team up to offer a bundle of their Disney+, Hulu and Max streaming services starting this summer. “The business will look a lot different in two to three years,” added Zaslav. “It will be a lot better for consumers.”
Sinclair is looking into selling more than 30% of its 185 owned or operated broadcast stations, sources have told CNBC. Tennis Channel could also be up for grabs. Sinclair CEO Chris Ripley did nothing to downplay speculation during Sinclair’s earnings call. “As we’ve always stated, we have no sacred cows,” he said. “We want to unlock the sum of the parts valuation that we think we’re grossly undervalued for. And to the extent that asset sales make sense in order to unlock that value and help us de-lever, then that’s something that we’d be open to.”
The power of live sports content among viewers A25-54 was apparent in a study from TVision. According to the data, sports-first live streaming service Fubo captured 33% more attention than cable and 70% more attention than typical vMVPD norms, with Fubo ads outperforming vMVPD ad norms by 50%. Viewers in the demo were also at least 23% more likely to be in the room for Fubo programming than other benchmark categories, including cable and CTV.
The woman depicted as a stalker in Netflix’s sleeper hit “Baby Reindeer” came out swinging in an interview with Piers Morgan on Thursday. Scottish lawyer Fiona Harvey (Martha in the series) said the show was a “work of fiction,” and had led to death threats. “It’s been absolutely horrendous,” she told Morgan, claiming that rather than the thousands of emails her character sent to series creator/comedian/bartender Richard Gadd as depicted in the show, in fact she had just sent him some “jokey banter emails.” Netflix has said the drama is a true story, and that it took “every reasonable precaution in disguising the real-life identities of the people involved.”

“Law & Order: Organized Crime” has been renewed for season five, but it’s moving to Peacock, where Dick Wolf dramas are among the streamer’s most viewed shows. The season four finale airs Thursday, May 16 at 10p on NBC.
Paramount+ has renewed “Lioness” for a second season. Season one of the Taylor Sheridan drama drew nearly six million total viewers in its first week across Paramount+ globally and a linear preview on the Paramount Network.
Also renewed for a sophomore run is “Ted.” Following its January launch, the comedy was Peacock’s most-watched original title to date and the #1 Original Streaming Comedy in the US for more than two consecutive months.

Lionsgate Television is developing a scripted series following LA Dodgers pitcher Shohei Ohtani, who rose stardom only to be shrouded in controversy when his interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, was accused of stealing $17 million. Warner Bros. Discovery reported revenue of $9.958 billion for the quarter, below Wall Street expectations of over $10 billion, with advertising revenue in its networks segment down 11% in the first quarter. There was better news on the streaming front –subscriptions rose by 2 million, to 99.6 million. “There’s a lot of irrationality in the market that’s getting shaken out, in terms of the amount of money spent,” said David Zaslav. “We said early on, it’s not how much, it’s how good, and that’s what we’re focusing on.”
Nexstar reported record first quarter net revenue of $1.28 billion, up $27 million, or 2.1%, reflecting growth in distribution revenue, partially offset by a slight decline in advertising and other revenue. As for The CW, “We continue to make progress at The CW, reducing operating losses by $50 million year-over-year and kicking off the 2023/2024 broadcast season by delivering two sequential quarters of primetime audience improvement,” said Perry Sook, Founder, Chairman and CEO. But don’t get him started on streaming. “The main reason we’re not in streaming is because we just don’t think it’s a good business,” said Sook during Nexstar’s earnings call. “Everyone wants to stream because they don’t have broadcast assets that are free over-the-air that can reach 100% of the population. So they’re trying to expand outside of that traditional pay TV universe. But we’ve been there from time immemorial. So the more things change, the more they start to look the same.”
Sinclair met or exceeded first quarter guidance on Revenue, Media Expenses and Adjusted EBITDA, and has pre-booked $77 million in political advertising for the second half of the year through Election Day, versus $21 million as of May 1, 2020 and $28 million as of May 1, 2022. “Core advertising trends remain solid in most categories, with our effective yield management and sales training processes driving industry-leading core growth over the past several quarters,” said CEO Chris Ripley. “We have significant retransmission agreements renewing this year, of which we are 42% completed as of the beginning of May. We continue to expect a mid-single digit two-year growth in net retransmission revenues from 2023 to 2025.”
The E.W. Scripps Company delivered $561 million in revenue for the quarter, beating estimates with a loss of $12.8 million, versus a loss of $31.1 million last year. Revenue for the quarter rose 6.4% to $561.5 million. Operating performance was aided by strong Local Media political advertising and distribution revenues, a lift in direct-response advertising in the Scripps Networks division, and “prudent expense management.” The company said it has begun a public process to explore the sale of its Bounce television network, acquired it as part of the Katz networks in 2017.

FanDuel TV announced the launch of “FanDuel TV Extra.” The FAST channel is currently available on platforms including Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, Xumo Play, Plex and through FanDuel’s OTT platform FanDuel TV+.
