YouTube and MLB are continuing their partnership, renewing ties for the return of MLB Game of the Week Live on YouTube. The deal will feature 15 games throughout the 2022 regular season, streamed live, for free, to fans around the world in 182 countries. This season’s MLB Game of the Week Live on YouTube debuts on May 5 at 3:10p with the Nationals/Rockies. The extension marks the fourth season of this live streaming deal between YouTube and MLB. Since the start of the live games partnership in 2019, MLB content on YouTube has generated 5.4B views and 425M watch hours, with half of the audience under 35-years-old.

“YouTube became Major League Baseball’s official partner to stream live games four years ago and it’s been incredible to continue to grow the game in compelling and innovative ways on our platform,” said Jon Cruz, Head of Sports Partnerships, YouTube. “One of the biggest commonalities within our partnership is maintaining a ‘fan-first’ perspective, so we’re proud to continue to keep our games free and accessible to fans in over 182 countries around the word while delivering the best of baseball in ways only YouTube can do.”

PROGRAMMING

Wednesday night’s NBA Play In Tournament on TNT saw the Clippers/Timberwolves matchup deliver TNT’s most viewed 2022 NBA telecast (excluding NBA All-Star) since Opening Night, averaging 2.7 million viewers. Meanwhile, the Cavs/Nets contest averaged 2.5 million viewers, up 75% over the comparable 2021 NBA Play-In Tournament game. Overall, TNT’s doubleheader averaged 2.6 million viewers, up 31% over 2021. Meanwhile, the NBA on TNT will exclusively present the Western Conference Meta Quest NBA Play-In Tournament finale tonight at 10p as the LA Clippers host the Pelicans, with Kevin Harlan (play-by-play), Reggie Miller (analyst) and Allie LaForce (reporter) providing commentary.

Peacock and NBC Sports revealed the name and logo of its new baseball franchise. Dubbed, “MLB Sunday Leadoff,” the platform’s exclusive Sunday morning Major League Baseball package bows on May 8 and will offer a live stream of an NBC Sports-produced baseball game for 18 consecutive weeks.

The National Women’s Soccer League rolled out its full television and streaming schedule for the 2022 season, kicking off on April 29 in Los Angeles. Ally, the NWSL’s official banking partner, will serve as the title sponsor of all matches across CBS platforms. The CBS Television Network will air two regular season matches, as well as the 2022 NWSL Championship. Paramount+, Paramount Global’s subscription streaming service, will also stream those three matches live. CBS Sports Network will air 11 regular season games and three playoff contests, including one quarterfinal and both semifinals. Paramount+ will exclusively stream 96 additional regular season matches live in the U.S., and Twitch will exclusively stream 24 matches in the U.S. Five Saturday night doubleheaders will also be streamed live on Twitch throughout the regular season beginning May 7.

Major League Soccer (MLS) and LIGA MX, together with SoFi Stadium, announced that the sports and entertainment venue will host its first-ever soccer event this summer, a Leagues Cup Showcase featuring the Los Angeles Football Club, LA Galaxy, Club Deportivo Guadalajara and Club América. On Aug. 3, SoFi Stadium will host the four clubs in a doubleheader. The doubleheader will serve as a preview to the Leagues Cup, the annual, month-long official tournament between MLS and LIGA MX – to kick off summer of 2023.

The NBA unveiled a reimagined logo for the NBA Finals presented by YouTube TV, which brings back “the iconic script font used in variations of the logo from 1986-95 and 2004-17.” “The NBA Finals serves as the culmination of our 75th Anniversary Season as we celebrate the league’s past, present and future,” said NBA Chief Marketing Officer Kate Jhaveri. “Highlighted by the return of our familiar Finals script font, back by popular demand, our new logo pays homage to our league’s history and looks forward to what’s ahead.”

For the first time in more than a decade, the NCAA Women’s Water Polo Championship is returning to national television. USA Water Polo is partnering with the NCAA and ESPN, to serve up live coverage of the 2022 NCAA Championship final from Canham Natatorium in Ann Arbor on ESPNU and streaming on the ESPN app on May 8 at 4p. “America deserves to see the best NCAA women’s teams play for the championship, and USA Water Polo is delighted to televise this game with ESPN,” said Christopher Ramsey, USA Water Polo CEO. “As one of America’s fastest growing sports, we think it is vitally important for this game to be seen by USA Water Polo members — the next generation of scholar athletes who dream of someday winning their own NCAA championship.”

The PGA TOUR locked in a long-term commitment to staging the Presidents Cup in Melbourne, Australia, with the biennial global team competition set to return in 2028 and 2040. The 2028 Presidents Cup will mark the event’s fourth visit to Melbourne, matching Gainesville (Virginia, USA) for most Cups contested in one city.

IMG teamed up with TV, film and audio production company Scattered Pictures to produce Hidden Sport, a new four-part audio series for the BBC. The series will see Kim Tserkezie take BBC World Service listeners on “a global journey to discover the world’s lesser-known sports and explore how and why they are so important to those who watch and play them.” The first episode will launch April 23.

NESN unveiled a brand-new studio at Fenway Park that will make its on-air debut today at the home opener of the 2022 Boston Red Sox season. The 20’x24’ studio space will be the new home for NESN’s pre and postgame shows for Red Sox home games and feature a 20’x9’ mural wall consisting of 1,968 baseballs and 60 34″ wooden baseball bats.
