A Cynopsis Message From VICE
News We’re drawing the line on news.
We don’t accept the premise. We don’t accept that you have to follow the 24-hour news cycle. We don’t accept that people prefer to get their news from a suit behind a desk instead of journalists in the field. We don’t accept that you can’t have a perspective without pushing a partisan agenda. We don’t accept that news can’t exist outside the echo chamber. We investigate the stories that intrigue and challenge us, no matter where those stories lead.

IN THE NEWS
Fox News was the first network to cancel its upfront event, scheduled for March 24. “In a precautionary effort to keep our employees, client and agency partners safe, we have determined that it would be best to cancel our upcoming event in New York based on public health concerns due to Coronavirus,” said Jeff Collins, EVP of Fox News Media Advertising Sales. The news came one day after Disney+ canceled its European press launch event over coronavirus concerns. The annual Google I/O developers conference and Facebook’s F8 Developers Conference, both scheduled for May in California, had also been canceled; Adobe’s Summit event in Las Vegas will be hosted online.
No Cannes do: Amid France’s coronavirus outbreak, Reed Midem canceled TV market MIPTV 2020, slated for March 30-April 2. Also canceled are MIPDocs and MIPformats, scheduled for March 28-29. Canneseries has been moved to October 12-15, where it will run with MIPCOM. “In the current context, many of our clients have expressed concerns about travelling at this time. Rescheduling MipTV in the coming months is not feasible, so the most appropriate course of action is to cancel MipTV for 2020,” said Reed Midum.
As far as the coronavirus pandemic’s effect on ViacomCBS, “The broader media industry on a relative basis is probably less exposed that other sectors and ViacomCBS is less exposed relative to some of its competitors,” said CEO Bob Bakish at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom Conference. Bakish also said the company has plans to sell its Simon & Schuster publishing unit, which “does not have a significant connection for our broader business.”
The shows will go on at SXSW, at least for now, despite the withdrawals of Twitter, Facebook, TikTok and more. “It’s important for us to remember at this stage that we’re actively evaluating mass gatherings on a daily basis,” said Mark Escott, interim medical director and health authority for Austin Public Health. “Right now there’s no evidence that closing South by Southwest or other activities is going to make this community safer. We’re constantly monitoring that situation.” Event is slated to place March 13-22 in Austin.
Will concerns about coronavirus keep you from attending industry events? Let us know in the Cynopsis poll: https://www.cynopsis.com/#cynmore.
Seventy-four percent of global video customers said they plan to stop paying for pay-TV within five years, according to Grabyo’s Value of Video Report 2020: The Consumer Strikes Back. In the US, 47% of respondents said they were willing to pay up to $35 monthly for online video services. “2020 will be the year we see the true impact of the streaming wars on viewing habits and what this means for the wider video industry,” said Gareth Capon, Grabyo CEO. “Our latest report shows streaming is no longer just for younger demographics, the viewing preferences of all consumers are beginning to align.” The report used data from 13,000 consumers across 11 territories.
Tavis Smiley will have to pay PBS at least $1.5 million after a jury found he breached a morals clause in his contract by having affairs with subordinates. PBS suspended Smiley’s late night show in 2017 after receiving a complaint. “We are pleased with the jury’s decision,” a PBS spokesperson said. “PBS expects our producing partners to provide a workplace where people feel safe and are treated with dignity and respect. It was important for us to ensure that the courageous women who came forward were able to share their stories and that we continue to uphold the values and standards of our organization.” Smiley said his contract did not forbid sexual relationships and he never showed favoritism, but an investigation by PBS concluded women felt coerced into sexual conduct, and some believe they faced retaliation.
A federal judge tossed presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard’s lawsuit against Google over a several-hour suspension of her Google Ads account. While Gabbard claimed Google violated her right to free speech, Google countered that the suit should be dismissed since it isn’t the government, and therefore should not be bound by the First Amendment’s prohibition on censoring political speech. (Google also said the suspension occurred because its automated anti-fraud system flagged unusual activity, not for any reason tied to politics.) Noted U.S. District Court Judge Stephen Wilson, “Google is not now, nor (to the Court’s knowledge) has it ever been, an arm of the United States government.”
Sci-fi series The Rook did not make it to season two on Starz. Rook’s first season averaged 225,000 total viewers. |
