03/03/20: DAZN unlocked plans to hit over 200 countries with its new platform

 

 

Tuesday March 3, 2020

DAZN sees big things ahead, announcing plans to expand into 200 countries and territories as the countdown runs for the company’s its first global live event featuring Canelo Alvarez’ on May 2. DAZN is currently available in nine countries — Austria, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the United States, with the new rollout out focusing on an English-language service focused on boxing. “Beginning this spring, most of the world will have access to DAZN and its unmatched schedule of boxing events,” said DAZN Group Executive Chairman John Skipper, per Deadline. “Our roster of championship fighters represents some of the world’s most popular athletes and we’ll be working with them to stage spectacular international events for years to come.”

PROGRAMMING

Univision’s TUDN extended its agreement with UEFA to continue to serve as the exclusive U.S. Spanish-language broadcast rights partner for the UEFA Champions League for another three seasons beginning in 2021. As part of the renewal, TUDN will continue to carry the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, and UEFA Super Cup contests, and has added UEFA properties in the UEFA Europa Conference League and UEFA Youth League to its broadcast lineup.

ESPN went public with plans to add baseball Hall-of-Famer Chipper Jones to serve as a Major League Baseball analyst. The World Series Champion and eight-time MLB All-Star will debut as part of ESPN’s Opening Day coverage on March 26, as the game analyst for the Giants/Dodgers telecast at 4p. Jones will primarily serve as an ESPN MLB game analyst, contributing to Opening Day, weeknight baseball and Holiday Baseball coverage.

The NFL, which announced that female fandom reached an all-time high of 47% of NFL fans, is launching several initiatives that will roll out during Women’s History Month. Among them is an “NFL360” special debuting on International Women’s Day – March 8 at 9p on NFL Network. In addition, NFL Network will air A Lifetime of Sundays at 7:30p, which tells the story of the NFL through the perspective of four iconic female owners.

An all-new edition of the unscripted series The Shop, Uninterrupted debuts Saturday at 10 on HBO. Joining Carter will be Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes; actor Chadwick Boseman; Atlanta Hawks star point guard Trae Young; rapper, singer, songwriter and record producer Roddy Ricch; actress, comedian and author Tiffany Haddish; agency executive, entrepreneur and author Steve Stoute; and marketing executive Paul Rivera.

Super Smash Bros. is getting a global circuit, with plans in place to launch the Smash World Tour around the world and featuring both Super Smash Bros. Melee and Ultimate. Players will be ranked based on their performance at select tournaments, and the top 31 players moving on to play for $250K. CEO Dreamland will serve as the first tournament listed on the schedule, with a over 25 community events on the docket.

The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference is set to become the “first Division I NCAA Conference to hold its esports championships concurrently with its men’s and women’s basketball championships” when the New Jersey Army National Guard 2020 MAAC Esports Championships opens on March 13-14 in the Adrian Phillips Theater at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. Seven MAAC schools – Canisius, Manhattan, Marist, Niagara, Quinnipiac, Saint Peter’s and Siena will compete in four different games: League of Legends, Overwatch, as well as Rocket League, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate presented in partnership with the Electronic Gaming Federation.

TSM named Mark Jacobs as Vice President of Digital Sales for Blitz based in New York. Jacobs joins after serving as the Senior Managing Director, Digital Sales for the Robb Report.
