“We’re not involved in any of that,” Discovery Inc. President and CEO David Zaslav said of the abrupt resignation of CNN head Jeff Zucker. Speaking to CNBC last week, Zaslav said, “Jeff is a good friend of mine. I can’t speak to this issue. We don’t own the company yet.” Zaslav, soon-to-be CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, pending regulatory approval of the deal, added, “CNN is a fantastic asset. I can’t wait to get in there.”

Joe Rogan offered his “sincere and humble apologies” in a lengthy Instagram post after a compilation video surfaced that showed him using a racial slur 24 times. While “The Joe Rogan Experience” host said the clips were “taken out of context” and insisted he is not a racist, Rogan acknowledged, it “looks f—in’ horrible, even to me.” The damning video was shared by singer India.Arie, who removed her music from Spotify over Rogan’s language around race. Since musicians including Neil Young and Joni Mitchell yanked their music from Spotify late last month over the spread of Covid misinformation on Rogan’s show, dozens of episodes of the podcast have been removed by Spotify.

SAG-AFTRA’s national board has approved proposals for a new commercials contract. The current contract expires March 31. Negotiations with the advertising industry are slated to begin February 15.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

HBO’s “Euphoria” was renewed for a third season. The show, starring Zendaya and written by Sam Levinson, delivered over 14 million viewers for its season two premiere. The Emmy winner’s sophomore run wraps Sunday, February 27.

Olympian Teddy Riner has partnered with with Banijay’s Endemol France (“Lego Masters,” “M6”) to create Yasuke Production Company. Endemol France and Riner will jointly develop and produce formats with a focus on the world of sport.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Apple TV+’s “Roar” (Apple TV) will premiere globally on Friday, April 15. The anthology series is the first to be released under showrunners Carly Mensch and Liz Flahive’s (“GLOW”) deal with Apple TV. “Roar” chronicles the experiences of women in varied settings, both real and imaginary.

FX has set the premiere date for half-hour animated comedy “Dicktown”: Thursday, March 3 at 10p on FXX. The premiere and the four subsequent episodes on will each feature two 15-minute segments focused on a washed-up boy detective who, in his 40s, is still solving teen crimes. The first season of “Dicktown” was part of season 3 of “Cake” (FX).

“Aftertaste” is set to premiere on Acorn TV on Monday, February 14, with all episodes available at once. The comedy starring Erik Thompson (“800 Words”) and Rachel Griffiths (“Six Feet Under”) focuses on a down-on-his-luck chef forced to ask for the help of his niece, a pastry chef.

Season 2 of Apple TV+’s “Dear…” premieres Friday, March 4th. Directed by R.J. Cutler (“Billy Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry”), “Dear…” showcases the cultural impact of celebrities through letters from their fans. Celebs included in the upcoming season include Viola Davis, Malala Yousafzai, Jane Fonda, Ava DuVernay, Billy Porter, Sandra Oh, Laird Hamilton, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and the late “Vogue” creative director André Leon Talley.

Instagram and Facebook series “Future Made” celebrates Black History Month by spotlighting Black public figures and their children, highlighting the influence on Black history that each has had.

New home, new date: Seth MacFarlane space adventure comedy “The Orville,” which ran for two seasons on Fox, moves to Hulu as “The Orville: New Horizons” on Thursday, June 2. The show was originally slated to make its Hulu debut on March 10, but was delayed due to Covid-19. MacFarlane posted an apology to fans on Twitter for the late start, which featured a preview for the new season.

Showtime’s “The L Word: Generation Q” was renewed for a third season. The sequel to “The L Word” (2004-09) is expected to launch its next season later in 2022.

COMING UP

Prolific producer Greg Berlanti (“Dawson’s Creek,” “The Flight Attendant”) will receive the Producers Guild of America’s Norman Lear Award on Saturday, March 19 at the 33rd Annual Producers Guild Awards. The Norman Lear Award celebrates producers who have made an impact on the art and craft of television.

Nat Geo’s “Clotilda: The Last American Slave Ship” premieres today, February 7 at 10p. The doc showcases the wreckage of a ship that illegally housed hundreds of kidnapped Africans for trade in Alabama in 1860, and was burned and sunk so that its owners could cover up their crime.

STREAMING

Amazon spent $13 billion on music, movies and series in 2021, according to an SEC filing, up 18% from 2020. That’s hardly pocket change, but less than the $17 billion spent by Netflix.

Shudder has acquired “The Cellar”, from Irish writer-director Brendan Muldowney and starring Elisha Cuthbert and Eoin Macken, ahead of the film’s world premiere at SXSW. “The Cellar” will have a day-and-date premiere on April 15.

Sensical, the streaming service for kids 2-10, launched a new roster of shows to celebrate Black History Month. The collection, called “Celebrate Black Stories”, will focus on Black creative achievement. Some programs from the collection include “Kujo’s Kid Zone,” “Kid’s Black History,” and “Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls.”

Anthem’s IMPACT Wrestling Channel and Fight Network have been added to YouTube TV’s Sports Plus package. The Sports Plus subscription for Youtube TV is billed at $10.99 per month.

Comcast NBCUniversal announced the launch of the NBC Olympics VR by Xfinity app. Available for the first time in 8K resolution, the app features more than 150 hours of live and on demand interactive virtual reality coverage of the Winter Games. “We strive to create innovative viewing experiences so immersive it rivals being at the Winter Olympics live,” said Sophia Ahmad, EVP, Xfinity Consumer Services. “Our robust network makes it possible for Xfinity customers to get closer to the action than ever before, experiencing for the first-time ever, the Games in 8K VR.”

Snap posted its first full year of positive cash flow in 2021. The company also announced its first quarter of positive net income in the fourth quarter. With this development, Snap has reduced its net loss from $945 million to $488 million. Changes in the past few years include a sharp increase in ad content and sponsored posts.

GOING GLOBAL

Cinedigm has acquired North American rights to the coming-of-age drama “Coast,” to be released day-and-date in theaters and on VOD April 8. The film, starring Fatima Ptacek (“Dora the Explorer”), Cristela Alonzo (“Cars 3”), and Mellissa Leo (“The Fighter”), follows a 16-year-old girl in a farming community who must decide whether to stay with her family, or leave to join a rock band. VMI Worldwide will handle international sales and distribution.

Fox’s “Next Level Chef” posted a 2.8/20 Live+3 rating after the NFC Championship on January 30, marking television’s #1 entertainment series telecast of the 2022-23 season and Fox’s highest-rated and most-watched Sunday in two years.
