NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

Microsoft‘s first TV series, executive produced by Steven Spielberg and based on the hit video game franchise Halo, will be released in fall 2015. Variety reports that Xbox Entertainment Studios and Showtime Networks are discussing a partnership to run the series on Showtime first. Additionally, Microsoft announced that the fifth installment of the video game franchise Halo 5: Guardians, will be out around the same time. At the company’s NewFront this year, Xbox Entertainment Studios President Nancy Tellem introduced six originals, with 11 more in development.

AT+T is expected to announce its acquisition of DirecTV today. Bloomberg reports the potential $50 billion deal would allow both companies to compete with the likes of Comcast and Time Warner Cable; the two companies recently agreed to a similar merger.

AMC ordered eight episodes of the web series All-star Celebrity Bowling from host of Comedy Central‘s @Midnight, Chris Hardwick. The show, which has attracted major stars like Jon Hamm and Bryan Cranston, was originally a hit on Nerdist‘s YouTube channel, with 1,049,368 total views. Hardwick also hosts AMC’s The Walking Dead talk show, Talking Dead.

CBS is developing a 24-hour digital new net, Les Moonves told Bloomberg. "There are already too many players for us to start a brand new cable network," said the CEO, "so we thought with all the content going digital right now, wouldn’t it be a good idea to do a 24-hour digital channel taking all the resources that CBS News has?" Moonves described the project as being in "early stages." The move may be in light of the Aereo Supreme Court case, according to Media Post. Broadcasters sued Aereo for copyright infringement for distributing antennas to consumers to watch live TV on the web for a price.

A new partnership between Vimeo and IPG Mediabrands will enlist the video streaming site’s creators in producing branded content for Mediabrands Publishing clients. The first to sign on, Charles Schwab, will produce a series of videos expected to be out this summer. "Our goal is to connect with people around our brand values, particularly on the idea of taking ownership, and the videos we’re creating are a compelling way to start that conversation," Charles Schwab EVP and CMO Jonathan Craig said.

Through a new partnership, Getty Images users will now be able to license Viral Spiral‘s library of clips and online influencers. Viral Spiral has connected brands like BMW and DailyMotion to social content sourced from the web.

Despite World Wrestling Entertainment‘s (WWE Network) confidence in reaching one million subscribers by the end of the year after becoming an online TV network in February, its shares dropped as much as 47 percent on Friday. Bloomberg reports that the wrestling net needs 1.3 to 1.4 million subs to break even and the network ended the first quarter with just 670,000 customers. NBCUniversal recently signed another multiyear deal to continue airing Raw and Smackdown on its USA and Syfy networks.

Hulu will now offer the popular Japanese animated series Sailor Moon to its U.S. viewers. Through a deal with distribution company Viz Media, Hulu will release two of the 200 new episodes every Monday. The first four eps are recut and remastered, and available to stream starting today.
