Paramount Global will hold discussions with Sony and Apollo now that their negotiating window with David Ellison’s Skydance has expired, a special committee decided over the weekend. Sony and Apollo have made a preliminary $26 billion bid for Paramount, including the assumption of debt. But the committee didn’t rule out continuing talks with Skydance for a deal favored by Paramount’s controlling shareholder, Shari Redstone, along with some Hollywood bigwigs. “I love the Ellison idea,” said James Cameron in the Financial Times. “If he gets . . . to run Paramount creatively, it could be a huge boon for this business in these ailing times.” Said Ari Emanuel, CEO of Endeavor, “Everybody is in business with him — Amazon, Netflix, Apple, Paramount and Disney all have a good relationship with David.”

Chris McCarthy, President and CEO, Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios and Paramount Media Networks has been named “interim principal executive officer” at Paramount Global, according to an SEC filing. McCarthy, George Cheeks, President/CEO of CBS, and Brian Robbins, President of Paramount Pictures and President/CEO of Nickelodeon, had been named the heads of a new office of the CEO following the exit of Bob Bakish, but SEC rules require a person, not an office, be named in charge. As for Bakish, don’t cry for the ousted exec. Bakish will continue as senior advisor to the company until October 31 with a salary of $258,000 per month, then will score a severance package in the neighborhood of $48.5 million, plus a bonus for 2024.

Omnicom is integrating cultural intelligence consultancy sparks & honey, launched in 2012, into its own AI-powered OMNI platform, reports MediaPost. The move combines sparks & honey proprietary culture-mapping methodology and AI technology with the Flywheel digital commerce business and its database, acquired by Omnicom last year.

NBC officially renewed “Night Court,” its top-rated comedy, for a third run. Season two has reached 24 million total viewers on linear and digital.

An F1 Academy docuseries offering behind-the-scenes access to the all-women driving category will launch on Netflix in 2025. Produced by Hello Sunshine, the series joins “Formula 1: Drive to Survive” on the service. “As these dynamic and fearless drivers break barriers behind the wheel, we are excited to partner with Netflix to tell the stories of these powerhouse leaders,” said Hello Sunshine founder Reese Witherspoon. “What we know is that when we put women at the center, people show up to watch.”

Andy Garcia (“Modern Love”) has joined the cast of upcoming Paramount+ drama “Landman.” The series from co-creator Taylor Sheridan (“Yellowstone”) is produced by MTV Entertainment Studios, 101 Studios and Bosque Ranch Productions.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

ABC has set its summer schedule. “The Wonderful World of Disney” kicks off with “Inside Out” on Sunday, June 2, and “The Bachelorette” launches Monday, July 8. “Celebrity Family Feud” celebrates 100 episodes and its 10th anniversary beginning Tuesday, July 9, following the previously announced special “Family Feud: Decades of Laughs.” Renewed for a new season and celebrating the show’s 25th anniversary, “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire” premieres Wednesday, July 10 on ABC. The latest iteration, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, will feature a new twist with two celebrity contestants playing together with the hope of winning $1 million for the charity of their choice. Joining the Wednesday lineup is “Claim to Fame,” back for season three. “Judge Steve Harvey” returns the following week on Tuesday, July 16. “Press Your Luck” was renewed for season six, set to debut Thursday, July 18, followed by new game show, “Lucky 13,” co-hosted by Shaquille O’Neal and Gina Rodriguez (“Not Dead Yet”).

The fourth season of Netflix’s “Emily in Paris” will debut in two parts. Part one drops August 15, and part two on September 12, with some scenes shot in Rome. “Expect new characters, a lot more drama, romance, and a whole new language to try and master,” teased series creator Darren Star.

“Dynamic Planet,” a four-part series filmed over three years that highlights how the natural world is adapting in surprising ways, premieres Wednesday, June 19 on PBS (check local stations).

Season two of Paramount+’s “Criminal Minds: Evolution” launches Thursday, June 6. New episodes follow weekly.

Teen pregnancy series “Unexpected” returns to TLC on Monday, June 3 at 9p. This season features three new couples and two returning young, expecting parents.

Brazil is the destination on the season premiere of “Gold Rush: Parker’s Trail,” airing Friday, May 31 at 8p on Discovery.

COMING UP

FETV will “Leave It to June” this Mother’s Day with twelve episodes of “Leave It to Beaver” featuring June Cleaver. The marathon will run from 9a-3p with an encore presentation from 6p-12a.

“The 2024 ESPYS Presented by Capital One” returns to ABC, live on Thursday, July 11. A host will be announced at a later date.

STREAMING

For the first time, starting May 7, non-Prime Video customers can watch seasons 1-4 of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” on the show’s own FAST Channel, exclusively on Freevee and Prime Video. The series follows a 1958 New York City housewife whose life suddenly takes an unexpected turn into stand-up comedy.

SPORTS UPDATE

NFL Network is undergoing a shakeup, including the cancellation of “NFL Access,” which has aired weeknight since 2003, and the exit of commentator Michael Irvin after 15 years. “Like any successful organization, the NFL regularly evaluates its workforce to ensure the proper support of strategic priorities including international expansion, the growth of flag football, and the evolution of digital and media platforms,” said an NFL spokesperson. “We have made the difficult decision to part ways with some employees to allow us to further invest in these growth areas and ensure the continued strength of our game and the business.”

Major League Baseball is in “advanced talks” to toss rights to Sunday morning baseball to Roku, sources told The Atlantic. Last year, the games aired on Peacock

Tennis Channel and commentator Brett Haber have agreed to a contract extension that will keep Haber on air through 2028. Haber first appeared on Tennis Channel in 2004.
