Apple beat analyst estimates for the quarter, with revenue of $90.8 billion versus the $90.3 billion expected. Growth in Greater China dipped 8% year-over-year, less than Wall Street had expected, while services revenue hit $23.87 billion, up from $20.91 billion last year, and a record high. Apple also announced it was authorizing an additional $110 billion for share repurchases and increased its dividend to $0.25 per share.

The battle between TikTok and Universal Music over royalty payments and AI policies ended with a deal the companies say will “deliver improved remuneration for UMG’s songwriters and artists, new promotional and engagement opportunities for their recordings and songs and industry-leading protections with respect to generative AI.” With UMG music back on TikTok after a ban that began in February, the two will collaborate on new monetization opportunities utilizing TikTok’s growing e-commerce capabilities.

Gray Television continued its rollout of NextGen TV in its market with several key initiatives to advance the transition. Among other consumer benefits, NextGen allows broadcasters to deliver superior picture quality and immersive sound. “For many years, broadcasters have been promising to use NextGen TV to bring superior picture quality and immersive sound to viewers,” said Pat LaPlatney, Gray’s president and co-CEO. “Gray is proud to be among a handful of leading broadcasters who are now delivering on that promise. Our stations in Louisville and Las Vegas are just the beginning of Gray’s efforts to launch more of its NextGen TV stations.”

Samsung Ads took to the NewFronts to tout a new lineup of sports, music, family and entertainment content on FAST service Samsung TV Plus. Among the sports offerings are live streams of the games of American Hockey League team the Ontario Reign, a Major League Baseball channel with recaps and replays, and channels dedicated to the PGA Tour. That’s in addition to new tools to enable advertisers to leverage AI for enhanced targeting and performance-driven outcomes. “Our AI and data-driven advertising solutions will better help advertisers meet their objectives across the full marketing funnel, from achieving mass reach to bottom-of-funnel outcomes like customer acquisition,” said Michael Scott, VP, Head of Ad Sales and Operations at Samsung Ads. “Advertisers will have a direct connection to audiences who frequently return for quality content.”

There are common misconceptions and misunderstandings around ad fraud, transparency, and brand safety, along with confusion regarding who is ultimately responsible for monitoring these issues, according to “Exposed: 5 Inconvenient Truths We Learned From Marketers,” a VAB study from Advertiser Perceptions. Key findings include:
– No single party is willing to assume responsibility for addressing ad fraud. Thirty-two percent of marketers say brands are responsible for preventing ad fraud, and another 27% say agencies are responsible.
– Marketers face persistent ad fraud with little recourse or power to address it. The main recourse taken by marketers is to shift some ad dollars away from the offending digital platform; 88% of marketer respondents report having shifted some of their ad budget to another platform as a result of discovering digital ad fraud.
– While over 80% of marketing professionals say ad fraud is a major concern, only 32% of brands and 27% of agencies are prioritizing brand safety over cost.
– A lack of transparency prevents marketers from understanding and identifying where the risks of ad fraud exist – more than half of marketers mistakenly believe the cost of their ad placements has no bearing on the likelihood of ad fraud.
“Over the last year, it’s been impossible to ignore the headlines filled with the repercussions of ad fraud and the lack of digital transparency. Yet, we’ve noticed a curious silence on this topic among marketers—the same marketers who loudly and rightfully demand their TV advertising meet strict brand safety guidelines and adhere to rigorous third-party measurement,” said Danielle DeLauro, EVP, VAB. “From misaligned KPIs to an imbalance in power to limited oversight, most marketers are clearly struggling to understand the consequences of their digital investment decisions. The good news is there is recourse and a path forward. By actively demanding transparency from media partners, marketers can reclaim true stewardship of their brands and work towards a business-building future.”

At the IAB NewFronts, FuboTV unveiled a suite of four new CTV ad units. Now available for brands are Marquee content sponsorships, enabling advertisers to curate highly visible content carousels located on Fubo’s home screen; Interactive Ads, designed to increase audience awareness and drive conversion; Pause Ads which can be outfitted with a QR code for additional engagement opportunities; and Enhanced Banner Ads, to give advertisers more precision in reaching their desired audiences. “As a company of firsts, Fubo’s ethos is rooted in innovation and enhancing ad opportunities on our platform is the next iteration of this,” said Dina Roman, SVP, Global Ad Sales, Fubo. “Our new ad units make way for high impact brand activations that drive even deeper levels of attention and engagement.”

Google took to the stage at NewFronts to announce partnerships with companies using its Display & Video 360 tools, including Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global. In another update, Google reported it is one of the first partners to directly integrate into Disney’s Real-time Ad Exchange (DRAX).

Among the announcements at Roku’s NewFront event was deal with The Trade Desk, giving the DSP’s advertisers direct access to Roku via a private marketplace and enabling advertisers using the Trade Desk to “suppress incremental households that have seen their linear TV ads. Roku also said it made iSpot a preferred third-party TV/streaming measurement partner, and ahead of the Paris Summer Olympic Games on NBCUniversal, has launched the NBC Olympic Zone on Roku, allowing users to browse through live and upcoming programming.

The Acceptable Ads Committee announced a new milestone: Acceptable Ads Standard now governs the browsing experience of 350 million users worldwide, a 40% increase in users that view Acceptable Ads in the past 2 years. “Prioritizing the needs of users has, and will continue to be, essential,” stated Terry Taouss, President of the Acceptable Ads Committee. “Intrusive advertisements alienate users, and this ultimately affects both publishers and advertisers. The growth of the Acceptable Ads Standards is proof that users are not necessarily opposed to advertising, but rather they are opposed to the types of ads that do not respect their choices. The Standard offers clear research-backed guidance for industry stakeholders that aligns with user preferences and sets an example for creating engaging digital experiences.”

AC&M Group, a marketing agency specializing in connecting brands and consumers with cultural insights, announced the acquisition of Argentina-based Axlot, specializing in web development, digital advertising, analytics and digital innovation. The acquisition is aimed at enabling culturally relevant marketing strategies with advanced digital solutions such as web and app development, interactive experiences, programmatic media planning and buying and marketing automation. “This move is more than an expansion; it’s a commitment to our clients,” said Jaime Cardenas, co-founder and CEO of AC&M Group. “Together, we’re setting new benchmarks in multicultural marketing, ensuring our campaigns are as dynamic and multifaceted as the communities we serve.”

STREAMING

Cineverse has debuted cineSearch, a new content search and discovery service. Available in public Beta, cineSearch aims to redefine how audiences interact with movies and TV shows. Viewers chat with AI video adviser Ava, who gives personalized recommendations. “In our eyes, cineSearch is a win-win-win – using AI to solve actual problems that our industry has to contend with in order to keep serving fans, creators, and all of the platforms that connect the two,” said Cineverse Chairman and CEO Chris McGurk.

Agora, a platform for real-time engagement APIs, unveiled its latest innovation, Adaptive Video OptimizationTM (AVO) along with support for the AV1 video codec. The technology harnesses the power of machine learning to dynamically adjust parameters at every step from capture to playback to deliver an enhanced live video streaming experience. “Reliable and high-quality live streaming is essential in today’s video-dominated media landscape,” said Tony Zhao, CEO and Co-Founder of Agora. “Our Adaptive Video Optimization technology enables smooth delivery of every call and livestream—despite network variability, user’s location or device. These improvements increase engagement and empower Agora’s customers to provide the highest-quality live video user experience.”

Paramount+ leads all streamers in ad impressions, peaking at 6.37 billion in 1Q24, according to data from AdImpact. HBO Max had the next highest level of impressions in the quarter, followed by Hulu and Disney+ and Prime Video. Disney+ and Amazon Prime saw declines in impressions from 4Q23 to 1Q24, likely due to a drop in viewership or changing content offerings. “Our analysis shows a seasonal variance among streaming providers, with impressions at their highest around the holiday season which is typically a peak time for viewership and subscription,” said Don Norton, General Manager, Data Solutions, AdImpact. “Bundles have also grown in prominence as the streaming market evolves, and we expect this to continue with the coming joint sports venture and as streamers face pressure to maintain subscribers amid cost-cutting measures by consumers.”

Kantar introduced a new integration with Meta to measure ad effectiveness within its LIFT and LIFT+ products, without cookies. The integration enables Kantar to retrieve Facebook and Instagram ad exposure information for a cohort of panelists from Kantar’s Profiles Network, panelists who have explicitly opted-in to have their Meta data analyzed by Kantar. On receiving ad exposure data, Kantar is then able to apply the Brand Lift Insights methodology to evaluate the impact of the advertising.

Streaming technology company Brightcove has implemented Amazon Q Business, a generative AI assistant on Amazon Web Services. Brightcove is leveraging the new assistant internally for real-world use cases applicable to the media and entertainment technology sector, and launched the “Brightcove Expert Bot,” an AI-powered chatbot embedded into the internal tools, as a new resource for the customer and product support teams.

Digital advertising platform GumGum announced a 38% reduction in bidstream carbon emissions in 2023 through its partnership with Assertive Yield. The collaboration between GumGum and AY aims to assist platforms and publishers with more efficient bidstreams, resulting in decarbonization and sustainability. Through AY’s Traffic Shaping technology, GumGum optimized relationships with DSP partners by applying Query Per Second thresholds tailored to each partner’s specific needs.

Adtech company Sabio Holdings announced a streaming app partnership with SNN, a multimedia financial news portal covering the Nano, Micro, and Small-Cap markets. Sabio will leverage its complete end-to-end tech stack to power the SNN media network’s streaming apps. This strategic partnership will bring exclusive content from leading financial experts to streaming consumers across mobile, smart TVs and desktop devices globally.

MEASUREMENT

Integral Ad Science announced a first-to-market integration with Roblox, the immersive platform for connection and communication. Available for advertising campaigns on Roblox later this year, IAS’s Viewability and Invalid Traffic (IVT) Measurement products will provide advertisers increased transparency into the quality of their Immersive Ads within complex 3D environments. “IAS is dedicated to supporting advertisers wherever they are, and that includes providing unique, effective ad measurement solutions across emerging mediums such as immersive 3D environments,” said Lisa Utzschneider, CEO, IAS. “Our partnership with Roblox makes us the first measurement provider to bring enhanced visibility and transparency to the world of 3D immersive experiences on Roblox, giving advertisers the assurance they need that their ads are driving engagement and reaching real users.”

Great American Media has partnered with VideoAmp for ad buying measurement and data capabilities transacting on the company’s linear channels, Great American Family and Great American Faith & Living. “VideoAmp has worked hard to deliver big data measurement capabilities that show the value we deliver to advertisers and enable us to report on how our channels target and optimize consumers engaging with our brand,” said Bill Abbott, President and CEO, Great American Media. “As advertisers make Christmas buying decisions, they can do so with confidence knowing the industry has a solution that accurately measures linear TV audiences.”

Media platform Teads unveiled an initiative in omnichannel video advertising, merging the power of omnichannel video with the precision of attention metrics to redefine campaign success. This initiative encompasses two approaches: CTV with TVision and Omnichannel with Adelaide. “Over the past year, Teads has made remarkable strides in attention measurement, and as we look to the future, we’re dedicated to pushing the boundaries even further,” said Neala Brown, SVP, Strategy & Operations, Teads. “Our vision is clear: to harness the transformative potential of attention data and translate it into tangible results for our clients, setting a new standard in the industry.”
