Paramount+ has ordered “Crutch,” a spinoff of CBS comedy “The Neighborhood” starring Tracy Morgan (“30 Rock”) as a Harlem widower whose kids move home. The series comes from A Bird and a Bear Entertainment, Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment, Wendi Trilling TrillTV and CBS Studios.

Tyler Perry Studios and DeVon Franklin (“Flamin’ Hot”) have signed a multi-year first-look deal with Netflix to produce faith-based films. First out of the gate will be “R&B,” written by Mike Elliott (“Brown Sugar”) and Cory Tynan (“Play’d”), a modern-day retelling of the Bible story of Ruth and Boaz. “I’m so excited to be working with DeVon on this and future projects,” said Perry. “I think in this polarizing world, and at a time where the world seems to be growing colder everyday, we both share the common goal of wanting to spread some good. And there’s no better place than Netflix.”

Should there be any doubt that women’s sports are red hot, TV outcomes company EDO analyzed how consumers engaged with this year’s WNBA draft and found that viewers were 8% more likely to engage with ads during the 2024 event on ESPN than competitive primetime programming, a 52% increase in ad effectiveness over last year. The top three ads by ad impact during the 2024 WNBA Draft all featured Caitlin Clark – two from State Farm and one from Gatorade. According EDO, viewers of State Farm Caitlin Clark ads during the draft were 275% more likely to engage online with the brand than viewers of State Farm ads on competitive primetime programming.

Digital marketing agency Goodway Group has launched two new divisions: GRADIANT, a funnel marketing agency, and G-Comm, a specialized retail media accelerator. “GRADIANT bridges the gap between brand and demand, giving marketers the answers they need to secure boardroom and CMO approval,” said Marc Ducnuigeen, Chief Client Officer at Goodway Group. As for G-Comm, Angela Myers, SVP of G-Comm, noted, “Both brands and retailers know the retail media potential is immense but have not yet found excellence across the practice as a whole. “The Young and the Restless” star Melody Thomas Scott and her husband, the soap’s producer Edward J. Scott, along with host and cookbook author Lidia Bastianich will be the Lifetime Achievement Honorees at the 51st Annual Daytime Emmy Awards, airing Friday, June 7 at 8p on CBS. “We’ve long wanted to honor the legendary daytime duo of Melody Thomas Scott and her husband Edward J. Scott. FOX News host Sean Hannity will host FOX Nation historical drama series “Outlaws and Lawmen: The West,” starting Wednesday, May 8. The four-parter will delve into the true stories of wild west outlaws and lawmen. “As our viewers know, I am a strong supporter of our men and women in law enforcement and I look forward to spotlighting a period of time that is pivotal in their origin,” said Hannity.

“Destination Heaven” premieres Thursday, May 16 at 8p on Great American Pure Flix. The series tells the stories of inexplicable events that happen to ordinary people, who come face-to-face with God to navigate the situation.

“Battle on the Beach” kicks off a new season Monday, June 3 at 9p on HGTV, as mentors Taniya Nayak (“Build it Forward”), Ty Pennington (“Rock the Block”) and Alison Victoria (“Windy City Rehab”) help teams of renovators in Oak Island, North Carolina.

Concert special “Judy Collins: Wildflowers in Concert,” featuring the folk singer performing her 1967 album, Wildflowers, plus additional songs, will premiere on select public television stations and on Passport in the PBS App beginning Thursday, May 30.

The majority of consumers will opt for lower cost ad-supported video services over higher priced premium ad-free offerings, according to new findings from Hub Entertainment Research. 1Q24 findings from Hub’s quarterly TV Churn found that with the launch of ads on Amazon Prime Video at the end of January 2024, a significant number of all TV viewers shifted from watching ad-free only to watching ad-supported video. The proportion of consumers using only ad-supported increased ten percentage points since 4Q23, while the group who watch only ad-free was down nine. “Virtually overnight, Amazon Prime Video dramatically transformed the video advertising ecosystem,” said Mark Loughney, Senior Consultant to Hub. “Suddenly advertisers have the ability to reach tens of millions of viewers on one platform, with robust targeting capabilities and a vast retail capability. Amazon has immediately launched themselves into ‘must buy’ territory for advertisers and media agencies.”

Netflix scooped up US distribution rights for TV series “Penelope,” from actor and filmmaker Mark Duplass and director Mel Eslyn. Duplass’ self-funded YA series debuted at the Sundance Film Festival.

After 35 days of viewing on ABC, Hulu and digital platforms, the season seven premiere of “9-1-1” earned 13.47 million Total Viewers and 3.46 rating in A18-49, delivering its best MP+35 performance in nearly 2 ½ years.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Kim Godwin has left her role after three years as President of ABC News, and is retiring from the news business. “It’s both a privilege and a debt to those who chipped away at the ceiling before me to lead a team whose brand is synonymous with trust, integrity and a dogged determination to be the best in the business,” wrote Godwin, the first Black woman to head a network news division, in a note to staff. For the time being, President of Disney news group Debra O’Connell, who became Godwin’s superior after a restructuring in February, will lead ABC News.

Hearst Television has promoted Nick Radziul to EVP. Radziul, previously SVP, Distribution and Government Afairs, has overseen the company’s partnerships with networks as well as traditional and digital video platforms. In his new role, he adds oversight of a portion of the company’s portfolio of stations.

Ed Adams, EVP and General Manager, Warner Bros. Animation, Cartoon Network Studios, and Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe, is stepping down in September. “For someone who was such a huge fan of animation throughout my childhood and young adult years, I never dreamt I might someday make a career in the field,” said Adams. “Of all the things I have done in the legal, animation, and entertainment industries, playing a part in the history of these three storied studios will go down as the most enjoyable and rewarding experience of my career.” Matt Matzkin, EVP, Business Operations & Production, Warner Bros.
