Cynopsis: Kids!
09.25.13
Good morning. It’s Wednesday, September 25, 2013, and this is your first early morning briefing.
EXCLUSIVE: Yummico and WNET, parent of N.Y. public TV station THIRTEEN, shared some exciting news with CynKids. The two are co-developing preschool and family-friendly programming focused on nutrition and healthy behavior based on Yummico’s digital musical food brand Yummiloo. No release date yet, but the co-branded, interactive material will evolve to other distribution avenues to reach kids, parents and educators. “It’s likely that short-form content that lives on the web site would make great interstitial linear content,” Yummico head of strategy and business development Susanna Pollack told CynKids. Added Yummico co-founder Traci Paige Johnson, “What’s wonderful about the digital space is that you dip a toe in and get immediate feedback about what resonates with parents and kids.” Calling the programming concept “a shared mission” between WNET and Yummico, Sandra Sheppard, exec producer and director of children’s/educational programming for THIRTEEN, is “optimistic” about funding for the project. “The idea of forming healthy habits at a very young age is an issue we at WNET are very invested in,” she said. “And there are a lot of other folks in both the corporate and government sectors who know what an important public health topic this is.”
PROGRAMMING PICKS
PBS Kids will herald the Monday, Oct. 7, premiere of Peg + Cat with a one-hour block of back-to-back episodes.
Cartoon Network will follow the Sunday, Oct., 6 premiere of its original movie Contest with a live online Q&A at www.StopBullyingSpeakup.com with Rosalind Wiseman, author of the new book Masterminds & Wingmen: Helping Our Boys Cope With Schoolyard Power, Locker-Room Tests, Girlfriends and the New Rules of Boy World. Wiseman also penned girl-focused Queen Bees & Wannabes.
In other Cartoon news, the net will premiere Pokemon the Movie: Genesect and the Legend Awakened Oct. 19 at 12:30p. For the devoted, Cartoon will be airing an encore presentation of Pokemon the Movie: Kyurem vs. the Sword of Justice before the new movie at 11a.
We’re big fans of The Breakfast Club, so we’re looking forward to the new “Detention” episode of R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour on Hub Network Saturday, Oct. 12 at 7:30p. An unlikely group of high school students spend the afternoon together in detention, where strange things and people start appearing out of nowhere.
Call for Submissions: Cynopsis is producing a Halloween Programming Guide which comes out on October 17 and will be sent to all Cynopsis and Cynopsis Kids subscribers. If your network has a Halloween-themed programming, please send your listings to me, Cathy Applefeld Olson, at [email protected] no later than Friday Oct 4. Please include the following information: type of program (i.e. series, special, documentary, movie or holiday-themed episode), title, dates and times of all airings (please indicate when the show first premieres and when subsequent encores will air). I will send you a confirmation email following each submission (if you don’t receive a confirmation email, please resubmit). Thanks!
PRODUCTION NOTES
Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade is back in the television game. The three-time NBA champ will have a cameo in Disney Channel’s Austin & Ally during a season three ep slated to air early next year playing none other than himself. The jock also appeared as himself in 2012’s What to Expect When You’re Expecting and 2010’s Just Wright as well as a 2004 episode of NBC’s The Celebrity Apprentice.
Sardine Productions and Gamerizon Studio are producing Chop Chop Ninja Challenge for Teletoon Canada. The series of 1.5-minute shorts follows four main characters competing in challenges. The shorts will serve as companions to the full-length series, also in development and is slated to debut on Teletoon in 2014.
Canada’s Victory Arts is developing a slate of new kids properties: Plane Jane, Hugz and Kissez animated series Shirley Locks, live-action Alpha Ants, (which begins production this fall), and YOUniverse, a series of mixed media interstitials about space exploration.
In another video game to TV migration, BRB Internacional and TVE’s Clan Channel picked up rights to a new animated series based on the brand Invizimals. Produced by SCEE, TVE and Screen 21, the series premiere coincides with the launch of two new Invizimals video games, which will be available for the first time on PlayStationVita (PS Vita) and PlayStation3, and contain second-screen content that amplifies the TV programming.
Disney has a sweet deal with Netflix but plans to date others. That’s the gist of comments Bob Iger, chairman and CEO of Walt Disney Co., made Monday at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia conference in New York. “We like what we’ve seen from Netflix,” Iger said, but “it will be hard for the company to corner the SVOD market” because barriers to entry are lower than they are in traditional media. Through a deal sealed last December, Netflix has exclusive rights to both new and catalog Disney titles during the pay TV window in the U.S. after the Mouse House’s current deal with Starz expires at the end of 2015. But Disney is open to partnering with other Internet video services, such as those that Intel and Sony are developing. Iger said, “We’re completely open to selling our product to them,” noting Disney’s been “platform-agnostic for years.”
PBS’ Sprout and South Korea’s MBC were early buyers of Breakthrough Entertainnment’s live-action preschool series Zerby Derby. Produced in association with TVO Kids, the show also airs on the French-language TFO in Canada and Knowledge Network in British Columbia.
BBC kids net CBBC commissioned DHX Media, Walker Books and Kindle Entertainment to produce Hank Zipzer, inspired by the book series Hank Zipzer: The World’s Greatest Underachiever, written by Henry Winkler and Lin Oliver. Winkler will have a role in the TV series, which gets a 13-ep run next year and tackles his experience with dyslexia.
Nickelodeon’s 10th Worldwide Day of Play (WWDoP) last Saturday was a hit, drawing 35,000 kids and families to Brooklyn’s Prospect Park and another 15,000 to local events around the globe. Some celebs stopped by the festivities as well. Joining Big Time Rush were the NBA’s Brook Lopez, plus cast members from Sam & Cat, The Haunted Hathaways and Instant Mom, and characters from SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Join me October 17 at our Cynopsis Future TV Summit. This daylong conference will bring together expert speakers on topics including Measurement, the Second Screen, New Networks, a unique “People on Chairs” guerilla Focus Group, and much more! Register here: http://www.cynopsisfuturetvsummit.com/
DIGITAL UPDATE
Nielsen will include viewership ratings on mobile devices in its fall 2014 TV ratings system. The New York Times says the move is the result of pressure from television networks hungry for the data. The new ratings will only account for videos viewed on network sites and affiliates, and not an ad-free streaming service like Netflix.
Tickety Toc is getting its very first app. Cupcake Digital and Zodiak Kids tomorrow will release Tickety Toc Bubble Time, starring dynamic twins Tommy & Tallulah from the hit preschool series on Nick Jr. in the States and Disney Junior in Canada, on iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, and the Barnes & Noble NOOK Store.

LICENSING NEWS
Would you like a hug with that purchase? The Official Care Bears Visa Prepaid Debit Card has arrived. Seems like an odd pairing, but the partnership between AG Properties and CARD.com says that “in both spirit and design, the card celebrates the innocence and blissful existence of these loveable characters.”
Building to the Aug. 1, 2014, theatrical release of Marvel’s Guardians of The Galaxy, Marvel Entertainment added home decor maven Jay Franco to its licensee cache. Franco will develop an extensive line of bedding, pillows, bath accessories, and beach products to debut next summer.
V&S Entertainment renewed licensing deals for its preschool series Everything’s Rosie with Blues Clothing, TDP Textiles and Aykroyd & Sons.
INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS
Nick Jr. U.K. and RTEjr in Ireland are adding Puffin Rock, a new animated series about a Puffin family living on a wild Irish island, featuring narration by Irish actor Chris O’Dowd. Co-producers are Cartoon Saloon and Dog Ears; series debuts in October 2014.
Spain’s TV3, TV Catalonia, has picked up the first two seasons of Geronimo Stilton from Atlantyca Entertainment and Moonscoop. The TV antics of a super-famous mouse journalist are inspired by the popular book series of the same name.
DQE‘s CGI animated adaptation of The Jungle Book bowed in Spain on Univision’s Saturday-morning Planeta U kids programming block earlier this month. The 26 half-hour eps will be seen in rotation in Spanish only.
The Australian Children’s Television Foundation is launching four new series. Comedic Worst Year of My Life, Again!, current in post production, is presold to CBBC (U.K.) and ABC 3 (Australia). Also nearing completion are kids wildlife series WAC (World Animal Championships), Handball Heroes and You’re Skitting Me.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Big Tent Entertainment promoted Sondra Seecharan to Manager, Creative and Product Development, and brought in Justina Tang in the role of Marketing Associate. Tang previously worked in the publicity departments of fashion companies La Fiorentina and Tommy Hilfiger.
FremantleMedia North America named Christine Shaw SVP, Communications and Marketing. Shaw comes to FremantleMedia from BBC Worldwide, where she served as the Vice President of Communications.
Twitter named Jeff Sandquist as its Director of Platform Partnerships. Sandquist previously worked as Senior Director of Developer Relations and other roles at Microsoft for 16 years… another ex-Microsoft employee, Christian Kleinerman, joined YouTube this week as the new Director of Product Management.
CYNKIDS SPOTLIGHT
It’s always a great week when books are in the limelight. A standing ovation to Scholastic for donating 1 million books to the nonprofit Reach Out and Read initiative, to promote early-childhood literacy by helping low-income families to build libraries and read with their children. The donation came a day after the Library of Congress recognized Reach Out and Read with its prestigious David M. Rubenstein prize of $150,000. What a happy ending!
