Good morning! It’s Tuesday, and this is the new, monthly Cynopsis sports newsletter.

MEDIA RIGHTS

NBCUniversal is planning to make a bid in the neighborhood of $2.5 billion per year for a package of NBA games that had been held by TNT, reports The Wall Street Journal. The exclusive negotiating window for Warner Bros. Discovery to cut a deal for current partner TNT expired last week. TNT had paid an average of $1.2 billion under its deal. Disney is reportedly set to pay an average $2.6 billion per year, up from $1.5 billion.

It’s the NBA’s turn to lead the media rights negotiation chatter, and right now reports are indicating ESPN and Prime Video are all but set to be part of the league’s next deal. Puck reports the league and one of the incumbent rights holders, ESPN/ABC, have the framework in place for a new deal. The expectation is that the NBA Finals will remain on the Disney networks. The other player involved, Prime Video, is making its move after obtaining rights to the NFL’s Thursday Night Football. Sources tell The Athletic that Prime Video will likely become “one of the main homes for the league’s games,” including a good portion of regular-season games as well as NBA Playoff contests.

The biggest three-vs-three basketball tournament has a new media rights deal. The Basketball Tournament (TBT) penned a multi-year deal with FOX Sports to carry games across FOX, FS1 and FS2. FOX Sports will carry 27 TBT games live on linear TV, with three of them set to air on FOX.

Caitlin Clark isn’t missing a step in leading the women’s basketball charge after becoming the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s WNBA draft. Reports from The Athletic and Wall Street Journal reveal the Iowa superstar is set to sign an eight-year, $28 million contract with Nike. It’s the richest sponsorship deal for a women’s basketball player ever, and includes Clark getting her own signature shoe. Among the also-rans were Under Armour, which offered $16 million over four years, and Adidas, which put forth $6 million over the same time frame. Puma also showed interest.

Nike and Adidas have been quick to sign NFL rookies. The two footwear giants got busy during Draft season, with Nike signing 20 players—11 of which were drafted in the first round—and Adidas grabbing four. Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua and Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby signed to Nike’s Jordan Brand, joining a roster of football stars that includes Jalen Hurts, Davante Adams, Dak Prescott and Deebo Samuel.

FIFA has a new sponsorship holder for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Soccer’s governing body entered a four-year global partnership with the Saudi Arabian oil giant Aramco that’ll run to the end of 2027. Aramco will become FIFA’s major worldwide partner in the energy category and will work with FIFA to identify opportunities to deploy different technologies and expertise, including enhanced engagement.

Gatorade is making a splash. The sports hydration company added NBA and Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic to its list of sponsored players. Doncic is the seventh NBA player to receive a Gatorade sponsorship.

The New York Yankees are donning Charles Tyrwhitt after the franchise signed the menswear brand as a partner. Charles Tyrwhitt will have signage within Yankee Stadium in addition to advertisements on WFAM radio during Yankees games, contests for tickets and other prizes and special offers for Yankees fans.

LIV Golf inked a multi-year partnership with New Era Cap to make the fashion and apparel brand the league’s official cap. LIV Golf players will wear New Era Cap products, and New Era branding will be featured at all LIV events.

U.S. Soccer is bringing in new commercial partners for the 2024 U.S. Open Cup, adding Marriott Bonvoy, Michelob Ultra, New York Life and Nike to its list of sponsors. This year’s competition will see the largest-ever investment from U.S. soccer.

Major League Fishing is teaming up with the supplement and energy brand REDCON1 in a multi-year sponsorship and licensing deal. REDCON1 will become MLF’s official energy drink, protein bar, protein powder and pre-workout, while also becoming the presenting sponsor of the MillterTech Stage Four at Lake Eufaula. REDCON1 branding will appear across MLF media and tournament assets, and REDCON1 will license the MLF logo on and brand on products in retail locations across the U.S.

ON THE MOVE

The MLB’s Athletics are saying farewell to Oakland after the 2024 season, but they’re not heading to Las Vegas quite yet. The team announced it will play the 2025-27 seasons at Sutter Health Park in Sacramento before its anticipated relocation to Sin City. The A’s and the city of Oakland tried to reach a short-term leasing agreement for the team to remain at Oakland Coliseum, but negotiations fell through, opening the door for a stop at the Sacramento stadium that can host over 14,000 fans. The A’s are hoping to open their new Las Vegas home at the beginning of the 2028 season.

The NHL’s Phoenix Coyotes are headed to Salt Lake City as their 2023-24 season comes to a close, the result of Utah Jazz owner Ryan Smith’s purchase of the Coyotes franchise for an estimated $1.2-$1.3 billion. With the league’s Board of Governors having approved the team’s plan to relocate to Utah’s capital, the Coyotes will begin playing in their new home at the start of the 2024-25 season.

A new company is looking to improve the connection between MLB’s Latino players and the global fanbase. El Show, a bilingual lifestyle baseball platform, is working with the MLB Players Association to offer a space to help fans better understand Latino players, who made up over 30% of Opening Day rosters in 2023. How does El Show expect to deepen ties? With docuseries, in-depth storytelling, fan interactions, co-branded opportunities and more, starting with players on the New York Mets and New York Yankees. El Show will grow to cover more cities and more sports, with soccer on the organization’s horizon.

Intel is rolling out an AI platform for the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games. The technology will be used to enhance universal accessibility in addition to improve broadcast coverage. The applications, which will use Intel processors and software, involve using AI and computer vision to analyze a spectator’s athletic drills to match their profile to a specific Olympic sport. It’ll also be used to allow indoor and voice navigation through a smartphone application, end-to-end 8K livestreaming for devices like 8K TVs and compatible PCs and customizable viewing experiences. Intel will introduce more AI-powered products in the coming months before the games, which begin July 26.

Los Angeles Dodger pitcher Shohei Ohtani is the new technology ambassador for Rapsodo, a sports analytics company that offers portable, data-driven technologies to showcase statistics. For baseball, high-speed cameras and radar can record and analyze data points for hits and pitchers, including pitch velocity, spin rates, launch angles, exit velocities and more. Rapsodo also offers softball and golf launch monitors.

RATINGS

Women’s basketball capped its powerful season with a record-breaking WNBA Draft. The event had 2.45 million viewers on ESPN, which was the most-viewed WNBA event ever on ESPN platforms, and 307% better than the previous record Draft set in 2004. Viewership peaked at 3.09 million viewers, and 1.06 million women viewers tuned in—a 374% year-over-year improvement. On social media, the Draft had 1,164% more total engagements compared to 2023.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

CBS Sports is continuing to invest in its Champions League coverage, unveiling a new 24-hour FAST channel titled “Champions League” that features highlights of memorable moments from the European club competition. The soccer channel kicked off on Pluto TV and the CBS Sports connected TV app, with upcoming availability that will include the CBS Sports app on mobile, online and on Paramount+.

ESPN Films greenlit a documentary about the life and career of Stuart Scott. The late broadcaster was an anchor for ESPN for over two decades starting in 1993.

Netflix is unveiling a series about the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders this summer. “America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders” will follow the 2023-24 squad from its auditions and training camp to the conclusion of the NFL season. It’ll be seven 45-minute episodes.
