Cynopsis: DIGITAL
05/25/11

Good morning, it’s Wednesday, May 25, 2011, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.  If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here

A mad rush for 99 cent downloads of Lady Gaga’s newest album from Amazon‘s cloud-based music offering crashed its Cloud Drive service on Monday, backfiring for the e-commerce giant and renewing questions about how ready the architecture is to meet unpredictable bursts of traffic. (Amazon offered the album for just 99 cents for a 24-hour period but the servers couldn’t keep up with demand.) Amazon Music allows you upload tracks you already own or purchase MP3 tracks and albums that reside on the web that can be downloaded using a proprietary player from your computer or any Android device.

Meanwhile (complex) negotiations continue to progress between Apple and the major music labels to clear the way for its own cloud-based music service, reports CNET. For instance, license fees for cloud services have no precedence and mechanical fees, set at 9.1 cents/track for CDs and downloads, have yet to be legislated.

AT&T’s U-Verse TV service has struck new TV Everywhere deals with Turner that will add online access to TBS, TNT, truTV, Cartoon Network and Adult Swim. U-verse Online now offers more than 160,000 TV show titles.

HGTV announced a redesign of its real estate site FrontDoor.com complete with a new free agent profile service that allows agents to build a persona on the site and seamlessly integrate with it with their Twitter and Facebook accounts.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Tech-centric Toyota is embracing social networking in a new partnership with Salesforce.com. “Toyota Friend” is a private social network for Toyota users that enables users to post short messages about their electric and hybrid cars to promote sharing about maintenance tips and user experiences. Rolling out in Japan initially, the network will also send alerts when service is due and will also be accessible through smart phones, tablet PCs, and other advanced mobile devices.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

App discovery platform AppTap unveiled a new self-service ad network for app developers at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference that enables advertisers reach a collection of tech blogs including AOL’s The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW), Cult of Mac, The iPhone Blog (TiPb) and AndroidTapp.

Virtual Greats has struck a strategic partnership with Universal Pictures to bring branded virtual goods of the studio’s titles into the social media marketplace. The partnership will launch on Thursday with catalog titles “Scarface” and “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” within the teen site Meez.com.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Brightcove is expanding beyond the video platform business, unveiling a new cloud-based content app platform used for building and operating apps for Apple iOS and Google Android smartphones and tablets. The App Cloud will enable companies to develop apps once using a web-based interface (open HTML5, Javascript and CSS3 are supported) then deploy them to both platforms. Content Optimization services promise enhanced synchronizing, transcoding, caching and delivery of content.

Poor Sony was hit with more hacker attacks on its music services in Greece and Japan, according to reports. The Greek attacks, which occurred on Sunday, were believed to have exposed some user information including names and some passwords.

Video solutions provider Imagine Communications is demoing an update to its ICE Broadcast System at the Cable Show, featuring increased flexibility and interoperability, sharper imagery and mobile and internet de-interlacing.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Online video viewing appears to be additive to linear television viewing, i.e. it doesn’t eat into prime time TV viewing, according to a quarterly monetization report from FreewheelTV, a company that tracks monetization rights of online video syndication. Online viewing (and ad consumption) tend to be fairly constant during the week then spikes on Saturday by some 13% over the lowest day (Sunday.) In terms of ad formats, pre-rolls are beginning to show classic ad cycle seasonality, peaking during Q4, then tapering off in Q1. Also, news and live events greatly impacted video viewing during the most recent quarter as consumer turned to their closest available screen to view horrific scenes from the Japanese earthquake or watch NCAA March Madness games while away from home.

Using facial tracking algorithms and biometric monitoring, video ad network YuMe and IPG Media Lab compared and contrasted how viewers pay attention to video ads online and on television. Based on the trial, researchers concluded that online video ads have 20% more attentive impressions than TV ads, as some 63% of TV impressions were ignored. Online video content gets 8.5% more attention than TV and online video ads have 18.3% more fully attentive viewers than TV ads. Although fast-forwarded video ads achieve little recall, ad fast forwarding accounts for only a small amount of wasted ad impressions – a larger factor is the familiar cadence of TV content, which increases drop-off to ads compared with online video.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

While users continue to wait for the delayed release of Angry Birds on the platform, Microsoft unveiled its “Mango” update to its Windows Phone 7 operating system due out later this year. Look for improved multitasking and some 500 new features, including:

  • New “threads” allowing you to switch seamlessly between text, Facebook, Windows Live Messenger and Twitter for the first time
  • Contacts that can be grouped into “live tiles” that reveal the latest status updates, texts or emails sent by each person
  • Microsoft’s App Connect will be better integrated with search and content offerings, allowing more flexibility and organizational options
  • location awareness and camera functionality will be integrated across several aspects of the operating system

Barnes & Noble is also following up its successful color NOOK with a smaller, cheaper black-and-white Wi-Fi only touch-screen version, shipping on June 10 for $139 (the same price as the ad-free Kindle.) The new NOOK features a 6.5″ x 5″ screen and is 35% lighter and 15% thinner than the previous model. It can hold 1,000 books as it ships (2GB of storage) but it can be expanded to hold up to 32GB. Like the iPhone the device sports just one button.

Spot‘s $170 Satellite-based Spot Connect GPS device, which provides a Bluetooth-connected transceiver that links to the Android operating system when you’re off the grid, is now available for iOS. Connecting via GPS enables you to send and receive SMS messages, emails and location-based Facebook and Twitter updates. The app is free but the service costs $100/year.

Comcast has come out with an update to its Xfinity TV app that extends Wi-Fi-based on demand streaming functionality released for the Xfinity TV iPad app in Feb. to the iPhone and iPod Touch. Nearly 6,000 hours of authentication-based shows and movies are available from networks including HBO, Showtime, Starz, Encore, TNT, TBS and BBC.

Twitter‘s rumored move to acquire TweetDeck has been finalized for a package of cash and stock worth $40 million, according to a report from CNNMoney. Tweetdeck is one of many social dashboards that has sprung up to make it easier to manage your Twitter obsession but no company has done more to constantly innovate its various interfaces and spread to the platforms consumers have embraced. (Tweetdeck says more than 1 million posts a day are now recorded on its Android app alone.) One of the smartest things TweetDeck did was to combine the ability to update your Facebook and Twitter accounts from the application, despite the fact it was born out enhancing the Twitter experience. Hopefully Twitter will continue to embrace its user-led legacy.
