Cynopsis: Kids!
07.31.13
Good morning. It’s Wednesday, July 31, 2013, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Are you a morning person? Sprout is giving aspiring actors and fans the opportunity to audition for the role of live morning show host with its launch of a national competition to find the next great preschool TV host. Now through August 31, hosting hopefuls can upload a 60-second audition video including their rendition of Sprout’s “Happy Birthday Song” at SproutOnline.com. Each day in August, Sprout will put the most notable videos on its YouTube channel, giving fans the opportunity to watch and participate in the Sprout Host Hunt. A live event will be held in LA on Aug. 23 at Universal CityWalk where Carly, one of The Sunny Side Up Show co-hosts, will join Chica – the world’s most famous chicken–to entertain fans and help prepare contestants for their audition. Three finalists will be flown to the set of The Sunny Side Up Show in Philadelphia in September, where they will have the chance to audition with Chica live in front of the show’s producers. The Sprout Host Hunt winner will be announced in December.
Speaking of Sprout… the net’s new trio of acquired series Sarah and Duck, Zou and Stella & Sam all hail from outside the U.S. and are exclusive to the network in the States. We wondered if exclusivity is the new bar for Sprout’s acquired content going forward. “We aren’t looking solely at exclusive content, but it’s very important to cable operators and it’s very important to us from a brand standpoint,” network president Sandy Wax told CynKids. “Shows like this which are exclusive and very high quality are often produced internationally, so we will continue to look at acquisitions around the world.” Sprout also airs Iceland-produced Lazytown, which is also currently exclusive to the net. Back in the world of original programming, the season two of Sprout’s hit The Chica Show debuted Monday (July 29).
Hub Network has set Saturday, Oct. 26, as the date for its inaugural Halloween Bash. The newest kids net didn’t waste much time jumping on the signature-event bandwagon–and it’s going big. The live-to-tape special will take place at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, be exec-produced by Bob Bain (Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards and Fox’s Teen Choice Awards) and produced by Paul Flattery, and air five to seven times around the holiday. A “spooktacular” event is the perfect dovetail with Hub’s cache of safe-scary programming including Goosebumps and RL Stine’s The Haunting Hour. The Halloween Bash will include entertainment, plus a nationwide costume competition with finalists from every state. “We’re trying to celebrate all kinds of families, stimulate imagination and creativity and I think we’re going to be blown away by the level of what we see and the creativity,” Hub president/CEO Margaret Loesch tells CynKids exclusively. “Think about it–a whole class of from a school in southern Illinois [where I lived for a while when I was a child] could be the winner. Or a couple, or an individual. We want it to be very egalitarian. Anybody can win if they have the best costume. They don’t have to sing or dance; they just have to have a great imagination.” Celeb host, presenters, judges and musical acts are sure to be in abundance and will be announced shortly.
A kid block for every niche: No matter which age or stage your child is in, there’s a network that’s got their Saturday mornings covered. The latest is CBS, which is partnering with Litton Entertainment on the three-hour “The CBS Dream Team, It’s Epic” block, which debuts Sept. 28 and aimed at those hard-to-pin-down 13-16-year-olds. The FCC educational/informational compliant programming block consists six new high-def half-hours packed with pro-social messages. Here’s the lineup:
Lucky Dog: Animal trainer Brandon McMillan swoops into animal shelters and rescues hard-to-love, unadoptable dogs and sets to work turning the frightened pooches into perfect pets.
Dr. Chris Pet Vet: Chronicles the adventures of Dr. Chris Brown, one of the world’s busiest vets, and the animals he devotes his days to caring and treating.
Recipe Rehab: Families submit their favorite high-calorie, family-style recipes, and two chefs face off in a head-to-head competition to give the recipes a low-calorie, tasty twist.
Jamie Oliver’s 15-Minute Meals: Oliver, of the Emmy-winning Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution, has perfected a delicious collection of healthy recipes that can be prepared in no time. In his signature style, he makes these meals for viewers in real time, offering hints, tricks and lots of nutritional info along the way.
All in With Laila Ali: Ali scours the globe to track down the world’s most compelling stories, profiling inspirational people, groundbreaking achievements and extraordinary lifestyles.
Game Changers With Kevin Frazier: OMG! Insider’s Frazier celebrates athletes and fans who reach out in their communities to make life better.
Nickelodeon will debut Spin Master Entertainment’s Paw Patrol on Monday, Aug 12. The CG-animated series, based on a concept by Keith Chapman, (Bob the Builder) and with animation from Guru Studio, is set to premiere Monday, Aug. 12. It stars a pack of six heroic puppies — Chase, Marshall, Rocky, Rubble, Zuma and Skye — who are led by a tech-savvy 10-year-old boy named Ryder. The series curriculum focuses on citizenship, social skills and problem-solving. The Paw Patrol works together to protect the Adventure Bay community believing that “No job is too big, no pup is too small!”
Sprout continues to strike new musical notes. Kids crooners Dan Zanes and Elizabeth Mitchell will stop by the network’s live Sunny Side Up Show on Thursday, Aug. 29, for some tunes and chatter. Chica from the Chica Show will also visit Zanes’ studio later this summer and Sprout will air a short video in the fall.
PRODUCTION NOTES
Two new series renewals from Disney-land. The kids will be spending more time with Uncle Stan as Disney Channel orders a second season of Gravity Falls, the animated comedy with a twist in the credits, created and exec-produced by Alex Hirsch. Gravity Falls has become quite the draw for K2-11 (2million/5.1 rating), K6-11 (1.6 million/6.7 rating) and Tweens 9-14 (1.3 million/5.4 rating). DisneyChannel.com/GravityFalls is featuring two new games: Attic Stuff Golf brings a new meaning to the term “reading the green,” as players have five swings to navigate the ball through a mini golf course created from items in the attic; PinesQuest, which launches Aug. 16, picks up where DisneyChannel.com’s popular “Rumble’s Revenge” game leaves off. Over at Disney XD, a third season of Lab Rats is in development; production will resume in LA in September and the season will bow next winter. The series, created by Chris Peterson and Bryan Moore (That ’70s Show) and executive-produced by Peterson, Moore and Hayes Jackson (According to Jim), is Disney XD’s top-rated series in Total Viewers (835,000), target K6-14 (556,000/1.6 rating) and other key demos.
Sister net ABC Family ordered a third season of the drama Switched at Birth, and has given back-order pickups to summer hits The Fosters and Twisted. The series will premiere alongside Pretty Little Liars in January.
Riverdale Redux: Moonscoop LLC and Archie Comics are co-producing the new animated series It’s Archie, which features iconic characters Archie, Betty, Jughead, Veronica and Reggie as 12-year-olds. The companies will be shopping season one at MIP Junior and MIPCOM, Oct. 5-10 in Cannes. “It’s Archie is the first new Archie animation in many years. We are very excited to be working with Moonscoop and can’t wait for a new generation of cartoon fans to embrace the entire Riverdale gang,” says Archie Comics publisher/Co-CEO Jon Goldwater. Archie Comics, published since 1941, have sold more than 2 billion comics worldwide. Since first offered, their digital app has been downloaded in excess of 4 million times with over 11 million digital Archie Comics and books sold.
You know Dasher and Dancer and… Amazon Studios is developing an original family film based on lesser-known reindeer Comet it hopes to develop into a larger franchise.
Temple Street Productions and Family Channel started principal photography on the second season of reality series The Next Step. The serialized tween drama, created by Frank van Keeken and exec-produced by Frank van Keeken, Ivan Schneeberg and David Fortier, will air on Canada’s Family Channel. Additional content will appear on Family.ca, including The Next Step Aftershow web series featuring exclusive character interviews and behind-the-scenes footage and commentary on the series’ storylines. BBC Worldwide handles the international rights to the series.

INSIDE THE BELTWAY
Big fines for children’s television violations are flowing from the FCC. Broadcast Law Blog reports the Commission is looking at fines up to $20,000 per incident for violations of the obligations to prepare and file Children’s Television Reports as it continues to assess license renewal applications filed by TV stations over the last year. Fines determined in the past two weeks target both full-power stations and Class A stations. The larger fines are being doled out not only for failure to file the reports with the FCC on a timely basis but also because of late placement of the reports into the station’s public file, and the failure to report the deficiencies in compliance on the license renewal forms.
GAMING & APPS
Cartoon Network’s mobile app is now available for free download from the Barnes & Noble Nook store and Amazon Appstore for the Nook HD Tablet and Kindle Fire. The app offers full episodes, videoclips, games and live streaming. The app is also available on iTunes, Google Play and the nabi tablet.
