Cynopsis: DIGITAL
10/06/11

Good morning, it’s Thursday, October 6, 2011, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.  If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here

Last evening, the world lost a true visionary as former Apple CEO Steve Jobs passed away at the age of 56. Apple’s statement on his untimely death:

We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today.  Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve.  His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Interbrand has come out with its 2011 Ranking of the Top 100 Global Brands, and the news isn’t especially pretty for Yahoo! as it dropped from 66 to 76, losing 11% in brand value at a calculation of $4.41 billion. On the flipside, Apple leaped into the top 10 for the first time, jumping from 17 to 8, as its brand rose 58% over last year to a valuation of $33.5 billion. As for the top 5, nothing changed from 2010 as Coca-Cola, IBM, Microsoft, Google and GE held on to their spots, in that order. However, Google did rise 27% to a $55.3 billion brand valuation. And last but not least, it should be noted that six of the top 10 brands for 2011 are tech companies.

Yahoo! is premiering seven new web series targeted towards female audiences this week. The unscripted, lifestyle-oriented series include Reluctantly Healthy, hosted by actress Judy Greer, and Let’s Talk About Love, hosted by actress Niecy Nash. An eighth show, The Failure Club, produced by documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock and intended for all audiences, will premiere in November and will focus on people overcoming their fears.

Hulu has announced a multi-year content agreement with Univision to bring its lineup of Spanish-language TV content to Hulu and Hulu Plus. While announcing the deal in a blog post, Hulu CEO Jason Kilar also noted some Q3 milestones for the video service. Namely, that Hulu Plus surpassed one million subscribers over the summer and the video site’s expansion into Japan.

Delta Air Lines launched new in-flight entertainment options for customers yesterday. It includes Delta Connect, a Wi-Fi portal that will give passengers free access to a range of content from Delta partners as well as news and entertainment; Entertainment on Demand, which will bring movies and TV shows to customers on all Delta Boeing aircrafts that will also be available to users for 24 hours after the purchase; and a redesigned and enhanced entertainment options for Delta’s fleet of Airbus aircrafts.

Synacor has launched “TV Everywhere for Everyone,” a campaign that focuses on helping independent pay-TV operators in smaller markets deliver TV Everywhere services. Since many operators do not have the internal capabilities of providing such services, Synacor estimates that, by offering of its own TVE solution, it can have 30% of rural subscribers TVE-ready by March 2012, and a full 100% by the 2012 Olympics.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Toronto-based startup Keek (http://www.keek.com/) has secured $5.5 million in funding. Keek is described by TechCrunch as a Twitter for video-based status updates. Users are allowed to upload and share videos that can be up to 36 seconds long from their webcams or the Keek mobile apps for the iOS and Android.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

In-stream video advertising technology provider AdoTube has launched a video production arm to its offering, called A2O Productions. The new business unit seeks to connect brands and advertisers with consumers by producing online content such as web series, viral videos and live concerts in an effort to expand beyond 15 to 30 second pre-roll advertisements.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

In the ongoing battle between Samsung and Apple over the design of smartphones and tablets, Samsung said it will try to ban the sale of the iPhone 4S in France and Italy as they try to take advantage of the significant publicity behind the unveiling of a new Apple product.

Cox Communications
will use Visible World‘s Conducter product to target customized promotions and advertisements to its own subscribers, according to Broadcasting & Cable. The cable television provider already has started using the product for back-to-school themed campaigns and has plans to do more holiday-themed campaigns.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

An eMarketer report forecasts that social network ad revenues will hit $10 billion worldwide in 2013, a sharp increase from the $5.54 billion it predicts ad revenues to reach this year. In 2011, 6.9% of global online ad spending will go to social networks, a number that is also expected to rise to an estimated 9.4% in 2013.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

AT&T mobile subscribers will soon be able to upgrade their existing iPhone to the next incarnation straight from their device, according to an interview between AT&T mobility head Ralph de la Vega and AllThingsD. Essentially, an AT&T customer with an iPhone will have access to an app that will let them order the latest iPhone and have it shipped directly to them.

Keeping up with the iPhone 4S related news, Mobile Marketer reports on how the new phone and the iOS 5 could pose some problems for marketers and app developers who will need to incorporate the more than 200 new features into the next updates for their apps.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Adspace Digital Mall Network has added three sales executives to its team. The in-mall digital ad network has hired David Botkin as Vice President of National Sales; Karen Jones Atchinson as Regional Sales Manager, based in Atlanta; and Kimberly Schraw as Vice President of National Sales for the Chicago market.

CyberDefender Corporation, a provider of direct-to-consumer remote technical support services and internet security software, has appointed Greg Thomas as CEO for a period of 12 months, effective October 10, 2011. The company has also nabbed $3.45 million in additional financing.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

In order to commemorate the unveiling of its 100 Best Dishes and Drinks, Time Out New York is running an extensive year-long promotion through various social media channels. The magazine is encouraging its readers to check out their recommendations for grabbing a bite or a drink in New York and then share their experience on social media sites, by offering a slate of prizes throughout the year. It’s a simple process: check-in to a restaurant using Foursquare; or share a picture of the recommended dish/drink via any photo-sharing site; just make sure you share it on Twitter using the #100best hashtag and @TimeOutNewYork handle that features prominently on the cover of the issue. After that, be in the running to win some prizes. Eat, drink, be merry and then eat some more.
