Cynopsis: Kids!
10/18/10

Good morning. It’s Monday, October 18, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) and PBS have been awarded a Ready To Learn grant of close to $72 million by the US Department of Education’s Office of Innovation and Improvement to fund multiplatform content efforts to improve math and literacy skills of K2-8.  The grant, which is part of $15 million in funds that will be handed out to organizations between 2010-2015, enables CPB and PBS to further their multiplatform math and literacy educational efforts with a range of partners, including local PBS stations, and existing and new PBS Kids producers, including Sesame Workshop, WGBH, Universal, The Jim Henson Company, Out of the Blue, TPT National Productions, Kratt Brothers, Cloud Kid, Portfolio Entertainment Inc., and Random House Children’s Entertainment. Other partners include the School of Education at Boston University, the Chicago Public Schools’ Virtual Pre-K and Virtual K programs, the National Summer Learning Association, Creative Commons and the Collaborative for Building After-School Systems.  Education Development Center, SRI International and WestEd will conduct research and evaluations to help support the CPB and PBS initiative.  This is the CPB and PBS’ fourth Ready To Learn grant since 1995.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Fox sets the release date of the feature film adaptation of Mr. Popper’s Penguins for August 12, 2011, per Variety.  Starring Jim Carrey and Carla Gugino (Watchmen, Sin City, Night at the Museum, Spy Kids, Entourage), the movie is being directed by Mark Waters (The Spiderwick Chronicles, Mean Girls, Freaky Friday), with John Davis producing under his Davis Entertainment banner.  The movie is based on Richard & Florence Atwater’s classic kid’s book Mr. Popper’s Penguins (1938).

The Hulk is head back to TV in a new series being developed by Marvel TV and Disney/ABC for ABC, per THR.  CBS aired the live-action series The Incredible Hulk starring Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno from 1978-82.  Additionally, Marvel TV is developing Cloak & Dagger, a series that follows two teens who have newly found super powers, which might be for ABC Family.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Teletoon (Canada) premieres a new series and new season of another series to its Superfan Friday programming block later this month and next.  The new Marvel The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes series debuts Friday, October 22, with the new season of Batman: The Brave and the Bold, from Warner Bros. Animation and based on DC Comics characters, bows Friday, November 5 at 7.  The block also features Justice League (7:30p) and the recently launched new season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars (8:30p).

The Ad Council and Sesame Workshop in partnership with the US Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) are launching a national public service ad (PSA) that will provide kids/families with information about preventing the flu this season.  Produced by Sesame Workshop, the TV PSA features Sesame Street’s Elmo and HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius explaining healthy preventative habits (e.g. stay home when you are sick, sneeze into the bend of your arm) and directing viewers to flu.gov ( www.flu.gov ).  The Ad Council will distribute the PSA nationwide to stations.  The new spot is also an extension of a campaign launched last year by HHS and the Ad Council, which also educated families about protecting themselves from the seasonal flu, as well as an extension of Sesame Workshop’s Healthy Habits for Life initiative.
