Cynopsis: DIGITAL

02/14/11

Good morning, it’s Monday, February 14, 2011, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.  If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here

Two powerful brands have thrown in together to try and play catch-up in the lucrative smartphone race. Nokia has signed a deal with Microsoft to make the Windows Phone 7 platform the primary operating system for Nokia phones going forward, fed by the Microsoft Marketplace application store. (Nokia will offer Windows Phone 7 apps through its Ovi Store portal initially, according to Nokia CEO Stephen Elop.) Nokia will try to expand the range of phones supporting the platform while Microsoft gains another partner for its Bing search engine and adCenter search ad services. It may seem late in the game for both companies, but the smartphone market continues to expand rapidly, particularly in markets where the segment is still in its nascent stages. And Nokia continues to enjoy a large market share of the non-smartphone market.

Lionsgate Digital
, hud:sun media and Todd Goldman (David and Goliath apparel) have partnered to launch a new animated short-from series, “Trailer Trash,” exclusively on Hulu beginning March 7. Lionsgate’s first online series revolves around a crudely-drawn family which lives, you guessed it, in a trailer park.

Independent entertainment-themed publisher BuzzMedia (Buzznet, JustJared) has acquired celebrity gossip site The Frisky from TBS,Inc for an undisclosed amount.

On demand service Exercise TV is celebrating awards season and Valentines Day with a new selection of on demand Red Carpet and Bellydance workouts.

Facebook announced it will permanently deploy changes to its Facebook Pages interface that will improve communications between companies/organizations an their followers:

  • A new layout provides a new navigation menu and new tools such as profanity blocks and the ability receive notification about fan activity
  • A new commenting system will enable small brands to place comments directly on other brands’ pages
  • Groups can feature photos of recent experiences on the top of their pages

Technology start-up MasterImage 3D is unveiling a new product at the Mobile World Congress this week that will enable smartphone and tablet computers to display 3D holograms, per THR. The image, as demonstrated by R2D2 in the original Star Wars (“Help me, Obi Wan Kenobi – You’re our only hope,”) can actually be interacted with by the user.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

The Ad-ID system of digitally coding commercials and implementing file-based workflows across the marketing supply chain, administered by the Association of National Advertisers and the Four A’s (American Association of Advertising Agencies,) has gained the acceptance of several industry groups including Nielsen, the IAB, CAB and TVB. The system will allow marketers to track viewership of individual commercials as accomplished by Tivo’s second-by-second Stop||Watch service.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Ailing video rental chain Blockbuster is putting itself up for sale instead of going through a massive reorganization in bankruptcy court, according to reports in the WSJ and New York Post. Carl Icahn and a consortium led by hedge fund Monarch Alternative Capital are the leading contenders to acquire the company, according to the Journal, but an auction could also be in the works.

Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Cal.) introduced a bill requiring the FTC to establish standards for “Do Not Track” legislation. The bill, inspired by “Do Not Call” rules, authorizes the FTC to enforce regulations that would give consumers the right to block companies from tracking their online activities. It would also require those who collect online traffic data to honor opt-out requests by consumers. Several consumer groups including Consumer Watchdog, World Privacy Forum and the Center for Digital Democracy announced their support for the measure.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Two app stores – the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace and the Google Android Market grew at a faster rate than all others in Jan., according to Netherlands-based app store tracker Distimo, expanding by 30% and 18% respectively for the month. The number of paid apps increased by 1,027 in Windows Phone 7 Marketplace while the number free applications increased by 576. The Google Android app store, the only store that has more free than paid applications, increased the number of free applications by 16,150 and expanded its number of paid applications by 6,847.

ComScore‘s monthly rankings also found that Bing grabbed search market share from Google in Jan., enjoying its greatest single month jump since launching in June 2009. Bing climbed from a 12% to a 13.1% market share while partner Yahoo’s share rose slightly to 16.1%, making their combined share 29.2%, compared to 65.6% for Google (which saw its market share decline by 1% point for the month.)

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Apple
is working on a new line of cheaper, streamlined iPhones to help expand its market share, reports the WSJ. A new model is in the works that is half the size and half the price of current models. The company is also exploring a major revamp of its $99/year MobileMe online storage service.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Marybeth Guiney has joined San Francisco-based Premier Retail Networks as VP/Sales. She will be based in LA and joins the digital place-based media services company from National Cinemedia.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Major League Baseball is hoping to make Fantasy Baseball a little more accessible striking a new exclusive partnership with CBSSports.com that will bring live MLB game audio and in-game video player highlights to the site’s Fantasy Baseball product. Users of the $180/league premium subscription will get free access to the MLB audio games at no extra charge, as well as the ability to pull up highlights of players they are thinking about trading for before they pull the trigger on a deal. With the NFL on the verge of a work stoppage next season, Fantasy Baseball could expand its audience significantly this year and advertisers who have found this dedicated bunch already know that FB engagement numbers (which peaked at over 3 hrs/per player for CBSSports.com last summer) far surpass those of FF. (Baseball teams play everyday instead of once a week, so your fantasy baseball team requires a lot more fine-tuning.)
