CYNTHIA TURNER’S
CYNOPSIS

10/15/04

Good morning. It’s Friday, October 15, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Wednesday night’s lineup including the third Presidential Debate from 9-1030p.  The debate was sustaining coverage and not included in the Nielsen Media Research.  According to national ratings, Fox’s baseball coverage delivered a 5.5/14 from 8-11p.  ABC’s Lost beat everyone at 8pm by a landslide – 6.8/18 A18-49 rating. Trailing ABC was WB’s 2.6/7 for Smallville, NBC’s 2.8/8 for Law & Order and CBS’ 2.0/5 for 60 Minutes.  UPN’s Top Model earned a 2.3/6 A18-49 rating, and ranked #2 among W18-34 with a 4.0/11, second only to ABC.  UPN’s Kevin Hill at 9p earned a 2.4/6 among the same W18-34 demo; while WB’s Mountain found its high demo mark among teens 1.8/6.

Debate Numbers: 51.2 million tuned in on Wednesday night to watch the third and last Presidential debate of this election year.  ABC with the biggest pre-debate audience, also had the biggest debate audience with 14.5 million viewers.  NBC had 13.9 million, CBS 10.8 million; and PBS 3.5 million.  Among the cable news outlets, Fox News led with 6.9 million; CNN 3.7 million; MSNBC 2.1 million.

The FCC has said it is not within their bailiwick to stop the Sinclair Broadcast Group from airing the anti-Kerry film Stolen Honor on 62 of its stations in 39 markets. Said FCC Chairman Michael Powell: “Don’t look to us to block the airing of the program. … There is no rule that I’m aware of that would allow the commission, nor would it be prudent, to prevent the airing of programing. …  I think that would be an absolute disservice to the First Amendment and I think it would be unconstitutional if we attempted to do so.”  Were the FCC to try to prevent SBG from airing the film, it would violate Sinclair’s Constitutional rights to free speech.  An airdate has not been announced for the film, just that Sinclair plans to air it within the final two weeks before the election.

Casting / Development / Production:

  • In active development at the SCI FI Channel is an original miniseries called Darwin’s Children from Michael De Luca (Magnolia, Rush Hour, Blade). This project marks De Luca’s his first television endeavor, which is based on the Greg Bear Novels, Darwin’s Radio and Darwin’s Children.
  • NBC has ordered a put pilot from Steven Levitan, John Immesoete and 20th TV for an untitled sports related sitcom about a black sports superstar who has a somewhat inflated view of himself and his world.
  • NBC‘s comedy in development My 11:30 (NBC Universal) with Jeff Goldblum has been cut loose, per Variety. The show was originally considered for this fall’s lineup, was pushed back to a potential mid-season launch, and has now been pushed off the face of the NBC earth.
  • Kevin Sorbo‘s talent holding deal with ABC may come to fruition with a family comedy project from Barry Kemp and Touchstone Television.  Kemp’s credits include Coach and Newhart, among many others.

ABC has moved up the finale episode of its Monday night reality series The Benefactor to October 25 – taking it out of the November sweep.  In fact, the entire series will be shortened from 8 eps to 6 eps, per Variety.

Starting October 18, WCVB/Boston will begin translating its local broadcast news and Chronicle (it’s daily evening news mag) into Spanish.  Additional news affecting or pertinent to the area’s Hispanic population will be included on WCVB’s website, TheBostonChannel.com, with in-kind articles and editorials with the El Mundo newspaper.  This new initiative is being financed by General Motors’ Hummer unit.

Nickelodeon will host its fifth Kids Pick the President election, on Tuesday, October 19.  Kids are invited to voice their choice by logging onto http://nick.com and to place their vote.  Why is this so interesting to you?  Because in the last four presidential elections, kids have picked the winner.  Kind of a Presidential Early Warning System.

Friday Fun Fact:  A “claque” is a group of clappers for hire.  I wonder what laughers for hire are called …

The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1965:  David Miller, a Catholic pacifist, burns his draft card in a demonstration organized by the National Coordinating Committee to End the War in Vietnam.  Miller’s vivid act of protest was not constitutionally protected speech: in direct violation of a law banning this form of protest, Miller was later arrested by the FBI, tried, found guilty, and sentenced to two years imprisonment.
