Global total advertising and marketing spending rose 4% in 2023, to $1.631 trillion, and is projected to rise 7.7% in 2024, according to PQ Media’s global forecast for 2024-2028. The US will account for 39.7% of global spend. “Early 2024 pacing data shows that brands continue to increase their budgets, as more consumers are shopping at brick-and-mortar stores, driving more miles in automobiles and attending events after years of being sequestered by the pandemic,” noted PQ CEO Patrick Quinn. “If the 2024 Super Bowl audience is an indication of consumer viewing habits, we believe brands will spend top dollar to be included in the over-the-air, digital and streaming coverage of the Paris Summer Olympics as well.”

CBS has formally ordered a “Young Sheldon” spin-off focusing on Sheldon’s older brother Georgie (Montana Jordan) and his fiancée Mandy (Emily Osment) for the 2024-25 season. The series has been in the works since January and will mark the 22nd consecutive season showrunner Chuck Lorre will have a series on the network.
A new drama series from Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios, called “The Department,” will debut later this year on Paramount+. Based on French drama “Le Bureau des Legendes,” the show is directed and executive produced by Joe Wright (“Pride and Prejudice,” “The Darkest Hour,” “Atonement”). Writer Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth (“Ford v Ferrari,” “Edge of Tomorrow”) will executive produce and write all ten episodes. George Clooney and Grant Heslov will executive produce through their Smokehouse Pictures along with David C. Glasser and 101 Studios.
NEW & RETURNING SERIES
Emmy-winning animated comedy series “Monsters at Work,” inspired by Disney and Pixar’s “Monsters, Inc.,” will return for its second season with a special two-episode premiere on Friday, April 5 at 8p on Disney Channel and Disney XD. Subsequent airings will move to Saturdays, with two new episodes launching each week beginning at 10a on both channels, leading up to the series’ streaming debut on Disney+ on Sunday, May 5.
COMING UP
Chip and Joanna Gaines will mark the tenth anniversary of their original HGTV show “Fixer Upper” on June 2 with another home renovation project series – “Fixer Upper: The Lakehouse.” The Gaineses’ own Magnolia Network and HGTV, the original home of the “Fixer Upper” franchise, will air the six-episode series across three weeks of double premieres, streaming same day on Max and discovery+. The original “Fixer Upper” series premiered on HGTV in 2014 and ran for five seasons and was rebooted as “Fixer Upper: Welcome Home” for the launch of Magnolia Network in 2021. Subsequent additions to the franchise include “Fixer Upper: The Castle” and “Fixer Upper: The Hotel.”
Peacock will debut documentary special, “Good One: A Show About Jokes” on March 26. An adaptation of the popular Vulture comedy podcast, the documentary features stand-up comedian Mike Birbiglia and his journey to develop new material, with interviews from other funnymen including Seth Meyers, Hasan Minhaj and Atsuko Okatsuka.
Fox’s “The Real Full Monty,” a two-hour special inspired by the 1997 film “The Full Monty,” will debut in the US later this year. Produced by Spun Gold TV and Fox Alternative Entertainment, the special is based on the international unscripted format that has aired in the U.K., France and the Netherlands. Featuring a daring group of male celebrities who will share their personal stories of how cancer has impacted their lives, the program will raise awareness for prostate and testicular cancer testing and research.
HBO Original stand-up comedy special, “Ramy Youssef: More Feelings” will debut March 23 at 10p on HBO and will be available to stream on Max.
Spectrum TV celebrates Women’s History Month with a collection of movies for free on demand and for rent spotlighting key women throughout history. Free movies available on demand March 5-18 under the Fierce and Fabulous category, (depending on the customers’ level of service) include “Girls Trip;” “Ghostbusters;” “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider;” “Thelma & Louise,” and all four movies of the “Hunger Games” franchise. Investigation Discovery unveiled new footage from its upcoming four-part docuseries “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV” of former Nickelodeon star Drake Bell revealing for the first time his abuse by his former dialogue coach Brian Peck. Peck was convicted of his crimes in 2004 and was ordered to register as a sex offender. “Quiet on Set: the Dark Side of Kids TV” will premiere over two nights, March 17-18 from 9p to 11p on ID.

Integral Ad Science has expanded its Made for Advertising AI-driven solution to enable advertisers to measure and optimize against both MFA and Ad Clutter sites. IAS uses advanced machine learning technology and additional signals built into IAS’s core platform to identify MFA sites (which are built to conduct ad arbitrage and feature spam sites) and Ad Clutter sites (which feature high ad density and high ad-to-content ratio). “With the proliferation of MFA, global advertisers need safeguards to avoid ad arbitrage and low performing, high ad density sites while optimizing for media quality and performance,” said Lisa Utzschneider, CEO of IAS. “We’re proud to offer the industry’s first pressure-tested solution for detecting and avoiding MFA and Ad Clutter sites at scale while also preserving the flexibility to reach audiences across a diverse range of publishers.”
Crackle Connex has signed an agreement with Infillion for the 2024 upfront purchase of advertising inventory across its AVOD. The inventory will run across inventory within Redbox, Crackle, and Chicken Soup for the Soul properties. Crackle Connex will also be able to sell the interactive ad inventory alongside Infillion. “Crackle Connex’s long-form streaming content draws the kind of high-quality attention advertisers crave, and is a great match for Infillion’s unique ad products,” said Infillion’s Chief of Staff and Head of Publisher Partnerships Mick Danahy. “We’re continuing to look for partnerships like this as upfront season kicks off.”
Sixty-seven percent of respondents said that ads running on TV screens are generally less disruptive than ads on mobile devices, according to a new study from VAB. “The Consumer Connection: Understanding the Effect of Quality Across Media Platforms” found that ads on the big stream had 2.2x higher recall and 1.3x higher purchase intent than those in a mobile environment.

The University of Wisconsin, the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Central Florida (UCF) are the confirmed participants in The Greenbrier Tip-Off men’s college basketball tournament, scheduled for November 22-24 at the White Sulfur Springs, West Virginia resort. A fourth team is expected to be announced at the end of the season, according to tournament organizers Intersport and The Greenbrier. Intersport and The Greenbrier entered into a long-term partnership to bring major college basketball to the mountain resort destination in 2023.
Martial arts organization ONE Championship announced two international partnership deals in the Netherlands and France. DPG Media will air ONE events and ancillary programming in the Netherlands across its recently launched ad.nl streaming platform. In France, ONE reached a multi-year pact with broadcaster RMC Sport, where RMC will air all ONE events and ancillary programming in the country across its RMC Sport subscription sports channels, and its Twitch channel Le 7-7. Both partnerships kicked off with the “ONE 166: Qatar” event on March 1.
Ally Financial announced a new multi-year, multi-million-dollar agreement with reigning WNBA champions the Las Vegas Aces to become the official retail banking partner of the team. In addition, a new national media deal for the league should help the financial giant move closer to its goal to reach equal spending in paid media across men’s and women’s sports. Ally intends to be close to 50/50 by the end of 2024.
Brightcove will power the live and video-on-demand (VOD) capabilities of MotoAmerica’s MotoAmerica Live + streaming service, which will exclusively broadcast the upcoming 82nd running of the Daytona 200 March 7-9.
FloHockey had its biggest winter on record, streaming more than 3,000 minor professional, NCAA and junior level hockey games in two months. The streamer said its social media accounts generated more than 5.1 million video views, 8.35 million impressions and 400,000 engagements in January.

Diagonal (Banijay Iberia) and Atresmedia TV have announced a new scripted series “El Gran Salto,” created by José Rodríguez and based on Spanish Olympic champion Gervasio Deferr’s biographical book of the same name. Directed by Roger Gual, filming for the five-episode series will begin in Barcelona this April.
ABS-CBN said it will be actively seeking co-production partners and pre-sales for drama series “The Bagman” at Asian film and entertainment conference FILMART (HKTDC Hong Kong International Film & TV Market), which begins March 11. Principal photography started February 25 on the series, a spin-off of the Filipino digital series “Bagman.”
Dori Media Group is launching international sales outside the U.S. and Latin America of ViX original romantic comedy “Lalola,” which premiered on the platform last month. DMG is selling both the new Spanish-language episodes of “Lalola,” which debuted February 2 on ViX, as well as the format rights to the international TV market. |
