TOP NEWS

Yeesh. For the fourth time in the past few months, Facebook has fessed up to presenting marketers with inaccurate data. In a new blog post, the social giant admitted to undercounting iPhone traffic on certain Instant Articles, its mobile publishing format that lets news publishers distribute articles across the Facebook app. It seems it was comScore, Facebook’s measurement partner, that caught the error. Facebook says the issue has now been fixed.

Major League Baseball-owned streaming video unit BAMTech is making a huge investment in eSports. Under a new multi-year deal, BAMTech will work with Riot Games to globally deliver content related to League of Legends, a multi-player game that boasts over 100 million players around the world. According to the Wall Street Journal (and later confirmed by a source who spoke with Variety), BAMTech will gain the exclusive rights to develop and distribute League of Legends eSports tournaments, as well as sell sponsorships and ads. BAMTech will reportedly pay Riot Games at least $300 million for the League of Legends rights. It’ll start to make use of those rights 2017; the deal expires in 2023. BAMTech is backed by Disney, which owns one third of the unit. Riot Games is owned by Tencent, a Chinese internet giant.

CYNOPSIS RATINGS MASTER CLASS
JAN 25  // 9AM – 3:30PM // NYC // Sponsor

TV measurement is more accurate than ever before – and also more complicated. Programmers and agencies can help advertisers target the audiences they want to reach, across platforms, but first they need to understand how to best interpret and employ the latest innovations and datasets. The master class offers explanations, insights and case studies from experts in the field on the tools your team needs to make their case. Register your team today for $100 off.

ADVERTISING

There’s a new ad industry trade group on the scene. Called the Ad Consortium, the group was founded by Comcast Technology Solutions, Adstream, Entertainment Communications Network, Burns Entertainment & Sports Marketing, Syncro Services Digital Media, Yangaroo, and The Team Companies. The Ad Consortium says it aims to increase efficiency when it comes to tracing and distributing creative ad content. The group will pursue goals such as identifying the best approaches for file-sharing and analytics, finding common terms for efficiency in order to improve accuracy, and directing marketers through emerging media.

Paris-based YouTube competitor Dailymotion has introduced a new ad product.  The product in question: A full-screen vertical video format that appears pre-roll (i.e., in-stream before a the start of a video). The new ad product is now available through direct sales; it’ll be opened up to programmatic buying early next year.

PLATFORMS, APPS + DEVICES

Amazon has made new updates to its second–gen Fire TV and Fire TV Stick streaming devices. A new user interface features large teasers for TV shows and movies from certain partners. (To start, those partners include HBO Now, Showtime, Netflix, and Dish’s Sling TV.) The new interface also lets users customize their home screens, offering faster access to their preferred apps.

PROGRAMMING + CONTENT ACQUISITIONS

Netflix has renewed Haters Back Off! for a second season. The comic series focuses on Miranda Sings, a popular YouTube character from comedian Colleen Ballinger.

VIRTUAL + AUGMENTED REALITY

Samsung was the first company to offer a sophisticated mobile-based VR headset to consumers. But with companies like Google making big moves in the space, adaptation and innovation will be key. So this comes as no surprise: Samsung is preparing to launch an updated version of the Gear VR headset, according to Electronics VP Sung-Hoon Hong. (Not too much is known about the new device, which may be unveiled soon.) According to Sung-Hoon Hong, Samsung is also developing a new augmented reality headset to compete with Microsoft’s HoloLens. Like the HoloLens, the new AR headset will enable users to see holograms superimposed over real-world surroundings. There’s no word on when the AR device will be consumer-ready; it could be quite a while.

OTT + SVOD

Canadian cable provider Rogers Communication announced that it has axed plans to launch its own OTT-based TV service. Instead, the company says it will launch a new service in 2018 via Comcast’s X1 hosted video platform. Rogers says it’s shifting to X1 “to ensure it has access to the scale and technical road map needed to meet the ongoing pace of IPTV innovation.” As a result of killing its own IPTV project, the company expects to take an impairment charge of close to $500 million (Candian) for the quarter ending December 31.

Speaking of Comcast, the company is boosting its efforts to compete with in the digital movie-sales space. The cable giant has begun offering enhanced film extras via its X1 service. The offerings come as a result of new deals with Universal, Paramount, Sony, Lionsgate, and Comcast subsidiary NBCUniversal. (Disney, 20th Century Fox, and Warner Bros. aren’t on the list, at least for now; Comcast says more studio deals will follow in 2017.) The new extras, which come with the digital purchase of a movie, are available for select titles. Comcast isn’t exactly breaking new ground; Apple’s iTunes, for instance, began offering movie extras in July of 2014.
