Cynopsis: Kids!
12.11.13
Good morning. It’s Wednesday, December 11, 2013, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Veteran studio exec Rich Frank has joined the board of directors for BabyFirst after time spent consulting network execs. Frank, who discovered the network through his grandson, has served as Chairman of Walt Disney Television & Telecommunications, President of Paramount Television Group and President of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. He gives CynKids the inside scoop on his latest venture:
What drew you to BabyFirst?
The channel has experienced expedited growth both in terms of distribution–20% this year to 40 million homes, ratings–which doubled in the last year–and sponsorship sales, which were introduced last month. Today, the channel is moving to leverage this momentum. To help achieve these objectives, I wanted to escalate my own involvement with the channel’s management team.
Where do you see the biggest growth opportunities?
* Continuing to bring BabyFirst to major U.S. operators seeking to carry the network as part of their basic packages.
* Continuing to grow the channel’s mobile app business, which has exceeded 5 million unique downloads.
* Reaching the U.S. Spanish-speaking market with our Latino programming (featuring Hispanic on-camera and creative talent and produced by Latino independent producers).
What areas of development do you plan to focus on?
After being involved in the launch and development of three cable networks that cater to the same target audiences… I am familiar with most of the critical issues that cable networks face. The BabyFirst management and I will focus on connecting with brands, enhancing our relationships with the media agencies, and [increasing] our ability to design and execute customized solutions for brands. We will also be focusing on furthering our outreach to the production community in generating new and innovative child development programming.
Set the DVR, it may be past the kids’ bedtime… Fresh from their appearance on Saturday Night Live, Liam, Louis, Niall, Harry and Zayn will be the subject of new E! special One Direction: Off the Charts, premiering tonight (Wednesday) at 10:30p. Hosted by E! News’ Jason Kennedy, the show will feature exclusive interviews and footage.
Boomerang is serving up some holiday cheer. Cartoon Net’s 24-hour classic cartoons network is delivering 90-plus hours of holiday programming, including a 30-hour marathon starting at 6:30a Christmas Eve and a Scooby-Doo marathon airing all New Year’s Day. Among the gifts: The Cabbage Patch Kids Christmas Special, Dec. 24 at 6:30p, A Scooby Doo Christmas Carol, Dec. 25 at 8:30a, and Yogi Bear’s All Star Comedy Christmas Caper, Dec. 25 at 9a.
CAKE is joining up with The People’s Republic of Animation (PRA), the team behind Fruit Ninja, to develop a series based on the popular kids app. Fruit Ninja, aimed at 6-11-year olds, is the first of a series of narrative programming offerings PRA is developing based on games and apps developed by Halfbrick Studios.
The Parents Television Council this week released a study noting while there is about the same amount of violent programming on broadcast and cable, programs that would be labeled for mature audiences on cable (TV-MA) were rated appropriate for 14-year-olds (TV-14) on broadcast. To assess ratings, the PTC analyzed the first four eps of the 2012-13 season of seven shows each on cable and broadcast. Shows with scenes depicting stabbings, shootings and rape tended to receive a TV-14 “parents strongly cautioned” rating on broadcast TV, while similar shows on cable typically received the much more cautionary TV-MA, the watchdog group found. NBC, CBS, Fox and CW did not comment on the study, which did not include any ABC shows. But broadcaster group TV Watch, for one, accused the PTC of “exaggerated numbers, flawed methodology and misleading or outright false claims.”
Cartoon Network is adding two new categories-MVC: Most Valuable Cartoon and Best Boogie, honoring favorite cartoon dance moves–to next year’s Hall of Game Awards; the fourth annual event returns in February.
It’s a fitting week for Disney’s 53rd animated feature film, Frozen, to topple The Hunger Games: Catching Fire from its perch as top box office draw. Disney Animation is feting its 90th anniversary this fall, and last night celebrated with a bash including speakers John Lasseter, chief creative officer for Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios; Ed Catmull, Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios president; and Disney filmmakers, artists and vocal talent, reports the LA Times.
Nickelodeon is teaming with the U.S. Postal Service for a campaign encouraging children to write letters. The “SpongeBob Mailpants” program features a web site, www.nick.com/usps offering writing tips, and 25,000 post offices offering postage-paid SpongeBob postcards for kids, through Jan. 4, 2014.
It’s all downhill from here, kids. Cartoon Net tomorrow debuts Ski Safari Adventure Time on iOS, Google Play and Amazon. The game puts viewers on the snowy slopes, where they can engage in features including dressing up characters, performing ski tricks and, our favorite, skiing with your butt.

Cinedigm acquired U.S. home video and TVOD rights to all 52 episodes; and home video plus digital content aggregation deals in Canada with platforms including iTunes, Netflix, Hulu and Amazon. In Germany, Edel AG will distribute DVDs and CDs across a broad range of distribution outlets.
U.K. indie Platinum Films appointed Haven Licensing as licensing agent for its series Matt Hatter Chronicles in Australia and New Zealand. Under the new deal, Haven will recruit licensing partners for a product rollout in 2014-15 and execute a cross-platform retail and marketing campaign.
Canada’s Teletoon is adding Packages From Planet X on Jan. 16, with new eps airing every Thursday at 6:30p. The series, produced by American Greetings and DHX Media, is about a boy who continually receives cryptic secret packages from an alien planet. It airs on Disney XD in the States.
DHX Media notched new international deals for another series, Yo Gabba Gabba!, which will debut on free-to-air Pan-Arab broadcasting net MBC Group in the Middle East and North Africa. Nickelodeon Australia picked up rights to season four of the series, and ABC TV Australia renewed rights to season three and acquired season four. In Latin America, Disney Junior picked up the fourth season.

Electronic Arts appoints veteran licensing exec Ryan Gagerman to Director of Licensing. Gagerman’s hiring comes as EA prepares for the launch the next Plants vs. Zombies game, Garden Warfare, in February, and Need for Speed in March. Gagerman most recently was VP of International Licensing at Paramount Pictures and held prior roles at DiC Entertainment.
Guru Studio promoted Amy Robson to VP of Production. Robson had been Senior Producer of animation for Guru since 2005, a role where she oversaw the studio’s commercials, broadcast design work, TV service work, and both the TV and interactive components of Guru’s original series Justin Time.
Ad sales veteran John O’Hara has been tapped as EVP of Warner Bros. Brand Networks, where he will head all media sales. O’Hara joins Warner Bros. from Turner Broadcasting, where he spent 24 years, most recently as VP/GM of Young Adults Ad Sales.
