10/17/16: Twitter’s stock plunges as Salesforce passes on takeover bid

Good morning. It’s Monday October 17, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

TODAY’S CODEBREAKER

Paid Traffic: Paid Traffic refers to any form of paid advertisement that directly moves traffic to a website. Most often, it refers to web traffic that results from a company bidding on keywords and making advertisements around those keywords to be displayed on search engines.

TOP NEWS

It’s official: Twitter isn’t getting sold anytime soon. As first reported by the Financial Times, Salesforce has decided not to acquire the microblogging platform. Along with Salesforce, rumored suitors had originally included Google and Disney. But, one by one, the companies lost interest. And with Salesforce out of the running, the suitor pool has apparently winnowed to zero. According to a recent Bloomberg report, the possibility of an acquisition sparked internal divisions within Twitter, with CEO Jack Dorsey opposed to a sale and board members, including former CEO Ev Williams, pushing to explore all options. It appears that Twitter’s shareholders favored a sale as well: The company’s stock plunged over 5% after Salesforce officially walked away.

The Snapchat Discover channel Sweet, a joint venture between Hearst and Snapchat parent Snap Inc., launched its first annual music issue yesterday. The issue featured a profile and exclusive cover shoot and profile of the Danish musician . The issue also featured an interactive element: Sweet’s editors shared songs that changed their lives, and invited users to snap their responses.

Some news from across the English Channel: France may soon be collecting a 2% tax on ad revenue generated by online video platforms like YouTube and Dailymotion. The lower house of the French legislature has already passed a bill that would impose the tax. (Informally, it’s being called the “YouTube tax.”) The bill now goes to the French senate for consideration. If it passes there, it would then need the approval of the European Commission

The Internet advertising and ad management software company AppNexus just laid off a good number of workers. 150 employees – 13% of the company’s workforce – have met the boot. AppNexus is telling employees that the lay-offs come as part of a streamlining effort; the company is planning to combine its buy- and sell-side groups, which have been operating separately. The moves come just ahead of an expected IPO, which could come as early as 2017’s firs quarter.

VIRTUAL + AUGMENTED REALITY

Looks like Oculus is expanding its hardware capabilities. The Facebook-owned VR company has acquired InfiniLED, a tech startup that’s been developing low-power LED screens for mobile devices. Facebook and Oculus haven’t explicitly said what they’ll do with the company, but it’s not too hard to make an educated guess. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently suggested that Oculus is developing a new headset that doesn’t require either a mobile phone or an external PC. To get the headset consumer-ready, Oculus will need to minimize the amount of power it eats up. InfiniLED’s low-power display technology might well be of help.

PROGRAMMING + CONTENT ACQUISITIONS

Chuck Lorre is getting into drama for the first time. The prolific comedy scribe and producer (The Big Bang Theory, Two and a Half Man) has reached a deal with Amazon to develop an event series based on Tom Wolfe’s The Bonfire of the Vanities. The project will be a co-production between Warner Bros. TV and Lorre’s Chuck Lorre Productions. The plan is to produce a single eight-episode season. It’ll be only the second adaptation of Wolfe’s 1987 novel. Hopefully it’ll perform better than the first one.

Instagram Stories, Instagram’s response to Snapchat Stories, is now an original scripted content distributor. Yesterday, the video-sharing platform debuted JoJo Head, a weekly comedy series from the CW. The series, made up of one-to-two-minute episodes, comes from director Suzanne Luna and writer/actor Johanna Stein. It’s produced by the Warner Bros. digital content studio Blue Ribbon Content and Unperfect Productions. The series will run for 18 episodes.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

The engagement agency Drumroll has named Russell Lambrecht as Group Creative Director. Lambrecht will be tasked with overseeing the agency’s creative direction and client roster. He joins Drumroll from the ad agency mcgarrybowen.

The digital ad services company Undertone has made two new moves. Robert Schwartz, previously Chief Strategy and Development Officer, will now serve as the company’s President and GM. And Undertone Co-Founder Eric Franchi has been named Senior Vice President of Business Development.
