10/14/16: Verizon confirms: Yahoo hack is an issue


Good morning. It’s Friday October 14, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.


Engagement Rate: In digital advertising, engagement rate refers to the percent of total impressions for an ad that are interacted with in some way – for example, hovered over or clicked on. Generally the term is used when discussing rich media ads.


This has begun to leave the realm of anonymous reporting. Craig Silliman, Verizon’s general counsel, confirmed to reporters that the Yahoo data breach that affected over 500 million users has become an issue for Verizon. “I think we have a reasonable basis to believe right now that the impact is material and we’re looking to Yahoo to demonstrate to us the full impact,” he said. “If they believe that it’s not then they’ll need to show us that.” Verizon agreed to acquire Yahoo’s core Internet assets earlier this year, in a deal valued at $4.83 billion. Silliman didn’t go so far as to say that Verizon was seeking to reduce the deal’s value, though an unconfirmed report from the New York Post last week stated that Verizon was seeking to cut the deal by as much as $1 billion.
According to a report from Bloomberg, Snapchat parent Snap Inc. has chosen Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley as the leading backs for its upcoming IPO. According to unnamed sources, JPMorgan Chase, Allen & Co., Deutsche Bank, Credit Suisse, and Barclays will also be involved. Snap is currently valued at $18 billion, according to Bloomberg. The company plans to make its public offering as early as March.

Facebook is set to begin quantifying the effectiveness ads placed on Audience Network, its ad network for third-part apps and sites. Facebook announced that it will start scoring the ad slots on the site and mobile apps of its publishing partners. The scores will take into account just how likely ads are to get clicks – and how likely it is for users to then follow through on what advertisers want them to do. Advertisers can then use those scores to determine how much money they should pay for any given ad placement. Audience Network advertisers be warned: Because of these new changes, it’s very likely that you’ll begin seeing fluctuations in ad rates.

BuzzFeed Motion Pictures has partnered with the media company Keshet International on a new game show. The project: A new digital version of Keshet’s Touch. Touch, which consists of both a mobile game and a digital game show, originated in Israel. The new version will be directed toward cord-cutters who use mobile devices as a first screen.


ironSource, a company that builds monetization, analytics, and other tools for developers and device manufacturers, has launched a new customization platform. Dubbed Aura, the platform is designed to make the use of mobile apps more personalized and less cluttered. For instance, instead of pre-loading mobile devices with a number of pre-selected apps, Aura allows users to view a preview of apps they may or may not be interested in, selecting or declining to install certain apps when they set up their phone. And the system also offers smart-notifications to users – for instance, automatically advising them how to download a backup service such as Dropbox if their phone is running low on memory. ironSource says it has already secured deals with over 30 device manufacturers, including HTC and ASUS. “For the end user it’s great, because you get started faster,” said Giancarlo Fasolo, ironSource’s EVP of Sales and Marketing, in a conversation with Cynopsis Digital. “And the carriers, or the networks, they want to get data working quickly, and get the user sticky to their device. As for advertisers, they can get on a device and make a connection to a user that actually has a desire to interact with that brand.”




If you’re a cord-cutter who’s engrossed in the bizarre trainwreck that is the 2016 presidential election, it looks like BuzzFeed and Twitter will have you covered on November 8. Starting at 6 PM ET on Election Day, BuzzFeed News will use Twitter to live-stream news coverage from its New York City offices. Video will also be accompanied by election-related tweets. Decision Desk HQ, a specialist in monitoring election returns, will work with BuzzFeed to produce data and to project winners. TV producer Bruce Perlmutter will executive produce the special.
Looks like Periscope isn’t just for mobile streaming anymore. The Twitter-owned app is letting content producers, including TV networks, break free from the phone camera. In a new feature called Periscope Producer, such content producers will be able to stream directly from broadcast equipment. Periscope has already begun testing Producer with several partners, including Disney, Fox, and ABC News. Now Periscope will begin to open the feature up to more users.


The gaming-centric digital media company Machinima looks like it’s about to be acquired, according to The Information. The report, confirmed by Variety, states that Warner Bros. is close to finalizing a deal to take full control of the company. WB was already an investor in Machinima. According to the report, the final deal will fall well short of Machinima’s initial asking price of $150 million. Instead, WB has valued the company at under $100 million.
SoulPancake just got eaten. The short-form digital media specialist, founded by actor Rainn Wilson in 2009, has been acquired by Participant Media. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.



@TSSTaylor: #SNL is already cracking me up
Canvs, the language analytics company that measures emotions around content, analyzed tweets about TV and streaming programming from October 5-11 using Twitter data from Nielsen. Insights from the 5,645,796 tweets expressing a specific Emotional Reaction (ER) include:
– 9.8% of people who said they were watching something beautiful on TV were tuned into ABC, with Dancing With the Stars the biggest source of beauty among the network’s shows.
– 16.8% of viewers who said they cried while watching TV were tuned into ABC, with Grey’s Anatomy prompting most of those tears.
– 3.9% of viewers who said they just saw something funny were watching NBC, with nearly half of those reactions driven by Saturday Night Live.
– 15.1% of viewers who said they were excited about what they were watching were tuned into CBS, with the majority of that excitement prompted by NFL Football.


Uninterrupted, the sports-focused digital media company co-founded by NBA star LeBron James, has made some major hires. Matt DeMartis, formerly the Director of Digital Ad Sales Strategy at Disney ABC Television Group, has joined the company as Head of Marketing and Brand Partnerships. Former ESPN producer Matt Rissmiller has joined Uninterrupted as Production Director. And Trevor McNeal, formerly HBO’s Director of Social Media Marketing, has joined the company as Director of Audience Development. All three will work out of the company’s Los Angeles office, reporting to GM Devin Johnson.
