CYNOPSISDIGITAL
10.13.16 Good morning. It’s Thursday October 13, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
The wait is over – Amazon Music Unlimited streaming source was finally unveiled and is on the move to undercut Spotify and Apple Music with considerably less expense for the consumer. Amazon Prime members are eligible for a significant deal at only $7.99 per month (or $79 for a pre-paid 12 months), for which they are promised unlimited on-demand access to "tens of millions" of songs. Non-Prime members price is $9.99 per month, matching the price for Spotify and Apple Music subscribers. Amazon has some catching up to do, as Spotify and Apple Music now have 40 million and 17 million paying customers respectively.
Pandora is not to be left out of the on-demand music streaming service conversation. To take a little wind out of Amazon Music Unlimited’s sails, Pandora launched their new mid-tier service, Pandora Plus. To go along with its logo redesign, the ad-free Pandora Plus allows listeners to pay $4.99 per month for a wider set of features, including the ability to skip more songs, more replays, and offline listening. The next step up will be more of a true on-demand streaming service, launching later in the year. Overall, Pandora has 78.1 million users.
Google and Facebook are partnering to lay a 7,953-mile underwater cable from Los Angeles to Hong Kong that’s top capacity will be 120 terabytes per second when it’s up and running in 2018. The project, new Pacific Light Cable Network (PLCN) will help Google deliver the G Suite (aka Google apps) and other Google Cloud services to the Asia-Pacific region, a tech market that is growing by leaps and bounds. This isn’t Google’s first rodeo when it comes to underwater cables; they hold stake in six others. In May, Facebook announced that at the time it was teaming with Microsoft to build a 4,000-mile underwater cable across the Atlantic Ocean to make Microsoft’s and Facebook’s services work more quickly and reliably for overseas users.
Nolan Bushnell (the founder of Atari and Chuck E. Cheese) is teaming up with Jason Crawford (who invented the Modal tech) to form a new virtual reality company called Modal VR. The platform combines radically different hardware and complementary software to deliver a portable, wireless, full-body VR ecosystem for enterprise that sets up in minutes and for multiple users at once. It boasts extremely fast and accurate tracking in very large areas, physical exploration and real-time editing of up to 900,000 square feet. "One of the things that we take for granted is that we can go buy a ticket, sit in a movie and watch somebody else’s world. I believe that very shortly we’re going to be able to go buy a ticket and enter a world," Bushnell said.
SpotX, the video inventory management platform, and Vemba, video discovery and distribution platform, are joining forces on a suite that provides top to bottom product for content producers and publishers that syndicate video content. Publishers will have the ability to access over 500,000 videos from Vemba’s discoverable marketplace and use it for their own properties.

The White House has issued a recommendation for the development of artificial intelligence. "Intelligent computer systems have long been the subject of science fiction," the administration said in a released report produced by the Executive Office of the President’s National Science and Technology Council (NSTC). "Now, we are entering an era in which AI is having broad and deep impacts on our daily lives." The report suggested that the use of AI could help private and government broadband networks anticipate and react to cybersecurity threats. "Given the potential impacts of AI, society would benefit from accurate and timely methods for monitoring and forecasting AI developments," said the White House.
