With hockey season finally here, ESPN revealed a brand-new, cross-platform creative identity for the company’s upcoming coverage of the NHL, blending “the authenticity of legends past with the elegance of the modern game in a powerful, fluid identity, rooted in cutting edge design” for the new work.

“NHL is the first project of this size and scope developed within our newly formed ESPN Creative Studio,” said Ben Bieglecki, senior manager, Creative Operations. “The final product is a result of company-wide collaborations and it displays the ECS team’s dedication and passion for the sport of hockey that we hope will strike a chord with both old and new fans. Opening Night is only the beginning for us as we continue to develop the creative in support of the All-Star Game, Playoffs, and ultimately the Stanley Cup Finals in June 2022.”

The company also announced that fans will “both see and hear the game like never before through new, innovative production approaches and technologies” with ESPN offering: on-ice cameras with operators allowed onto the ice for shootouts, coming out of the breaks and more; pregame interviews; locker room cameras; and SMT – NHL EDGE (Puck & Player Tracking). Production also includes the four point SupraCam aerial system, Super Slow Mo Replay and Libero Telestration.

PROGRAMMING

Turner Sports opens play with the NHL regular season opening week doubleheader tonight that will showcase the Rangers visiting the Capitals at 7:30p, followed by the Blackhawks/Avalanche at 10p. NHL on TNT Face Off Presented by Verizon pre-game studio coverage will begin at 7p. Based out of WarnerMedia Studios in Atlanta, the new NHL on TNT studio set includes “first-of-its-kind” front projection technology across every screen featuring over 1,000 square feet of LED tiles, totaling over 400 tiles that reach up to 13 feet high. Additionally, it includes an area with over 50 feet of curved LED tiles. The channel’s marketing campaign “It’s Our Shift” uses first person view (FPV) racing drones to shoot 45 of the top players in the NHL, to showcase the speed and skill on the ice and get fans excited for a new shift of hockey coverage on TNT.

Meanwhile, NHL Network will increase its NHL Network Showcase presented by SAP game package this year with a season-long schedule of 25 live weekend afternoon telecasts, plus an additional 65 live games this season. Live studio content will return with analysis, interviews, and previews on NHL Now, NHL Tonight and On The Fly. NHL Network’s weekly kids-focused program, will return this season on Saturday at 9a.

On the ratings front, ESPN’s Monday Night Football presentation of the Colts/Ravens generated an audience of 11,375,000 viewers across ESPN and ESPN Deportes, up from the 2020 season’s Chargers-Saints Week 5 matchup tally of 11,181,000 viewers on ESPN. Season-to-date, Monday Night Football is up 20% from both 2020 and 2019 seasons, averaging 14 million viewers through the first five weeks of the season.

Sunday Night Football, meanwhile, handed NBC with a average Total Audience Delivery of 18.4 million viewers, up 18% from Week 5 SNF Last Year. SNF is averaging a Total Audience Delivery of 22.4 million viewers for the franchise this season, tops through week five since 2015.

FOX Sports saw its presentation of America’s Game of the Week snag 22,052,000 viewers, to rank as the most-watch telecast of the week, with the overall week 5 lineup averaging 16,450,000 viewers, up 16%.

CBS Sports’ presentation of Texas A&M’s upset victory over Alabama on Saturday ranked as the most-watched TV program of the day on any network. The game peaked with 12.263 million viewers for the finish and averaged 8.334 million viewers. It also marked the second-most streamed regular season college football game ever on Paramount+.

Athletes Unlimited announced the launch of a new professional women’s basketball league, set to debut in January 2022. Basketball will be the fourth Athletes Unlimited league, joining softball, volleyball and lacrosse. Athletes Unlimited Basketball will feature 44 players competing in a five-week season from January 29 through February 28, 2022. The league also announced its first three players: Washington Mystics standout Natasha Cloud (Broomall, Pa.) and WNBA veterans Sydney Colson (Houston, Texas) and Ty Young (Wilmington, N.C.).

ESPN Podcasts will debut a new men’s college basketball show, Bald Men on Campus, beginning Thursday and featuring men’s college basketball analysts Jay Bilas, LaPhonso Ellis and Seth Greenberg. “Nothing has made me want to grow hair more than being a part of Bald Men on Campus,” said Bilas. “This podcast gives us the opportunity to talk about all the biggest issues in college basketball with the best coaches and players as guests and the best broadcasters in the business as hosts…and the most humble.”

ESPN’s morning debate show First Take – featuring Stephen A. Smith and host Molly Qerim Rose – will hit the road for its first on-site show since Jan. 2020 when it travels to Florida A&M for the university’s homecoming weekend.

Syracuse University Athletics and LEARFIELD announced the launch of the trailer for STORIED – a five-part documentary providing fans all-access into the 2021-22 Syracuse men’s basketball program. STORIED is directed by Josh Swade with episodes of the series running on Tuesdays, from October 12 – November 9.

CBS Sports locked in its college football Saturday showcase for Oct. 23 at 3:30p will feature the SEC on CBS matchup between LSU and Ole Miss. Brad Nessler, Gary Danielson and reporter Jamie Erdahl will call the action from Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford, Miss.
