IN THE NEWS
NBCUniversal and Google reached a carriage deal the day after their previous agreement expired – and after NBCU had warned YouTube TV subscribers that if a deal wasn’t reached, they could lose over 14 channels, as well as regional sports networks. “YouTube is a valued partner and we never want to involve our fans in a dispute, but we felt obligated to let them know what was at stake,” said the company.
“The current RSN model is fundamentally broken,” opined Brian Neylon, Group President, DISH TV, after the satellite company dropped AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain, AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh and Roor Sports Northwest. “This model requires nearly all customers to pay for RSNs when only a small percentage of customers actually watch them.” Neylon added that DISH had proposed an a la carte model, with “no customers paying for what they don’t watch.” Responded Patrick Crumb, President of AT&T Sports Networks, “It is unfortunate that Dish has decided to abandon local MLB, NBA and NHL games, but the vast majority of Dish subscribers will have multiple alternative options for TV and streaming providers that carry our networks.”
Digital media company Ozy Media, founded in 2013, is shutting down. The news came on Friday, five days after a New York Times article raised questions about the company, including the description of a phone call during which Ozy co-founder and CEO Samir Rao impersonated a YouTube executive on an investor call. Reports had also surfaced questioning the company’s claims of audience numbers. “At Ozy, we have been blessed with a remarkable team of dedicated staff,” said a statement from the company’s board of directors. “It is therefore with the heaviest of hearts that we must announce today that we are closing Ozy’s doors.”
“Mike & Molly” is joining Nick at Nite’s lineup beginning today, October 4. The comedy, which ran on CBS from 2010-17, will air weekdays from 2a-4a.
Donald Trump wants to get back on Twitter. Attorneys for the former president filed a motion in Miami seeking a preliminary injunction against Twitter and CEO Jack Dorsey, claiming the platform’s banning of Trump, following the January 6 attack on the Capitol, is a violation of his First Amendment rights and Florida’s new social media law. The new law, signed by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in May, prohibits social media companies from “knowingly” deplatforming politicians, but was blocked by a federal judge in July, a decision that is being appealed.
After 22 years with NBC, Natalie Morales is joining CBS’ “The Talk.” Morales has worked on “Today” since 2006, and joined “Dateline” as an official correspondent in 2020. She will continue to appear on “Dateline” through the end of the year.
Scarlett Johansson and Disney have settled a lawsuit over Disney’s release of “Black Widow” on Disney+ as well as in theaters in July, which Johansson claimed reneged on their promise that the film would be released exclusively in theaters. But despite heated words, it appears there’s no bad blood. “I’m very pleased that we have been able to come to a mutual agreement with Scarlett Johansson regarding ‘Black Widow,’” said Alan Bergman, Chairman, Disney Studios Content. “We appreciate her contributions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and look forward to working together on a number of upcoming projects, including Disney’s ‘Tower of Terror.’”
“America’s Got Talent” host Terry Crews will also host NBC’s upcoming spinoff, “AGT: Extreme.” Joining Simon Cowell as judges will be former WWE wrestler Nikki Bella and X Games gold medalist Travis Pastrana. The series is set to launch midseason.
“Dancing With the Stars” contestant Cody Rigsby and his (also vaccinated) partner, Cheryl Burke, will compete on the ABC show tonight despite both having tested positive for COVID-19. They will appear virtually from home to dance, and be graded on rehearsal footage.
