09/30/16: Nielsen rolls out Digital content ratings; Study finds cord-cutters could cost TV industry $1 billion in one year; Playstation adds HBO Now

It’s not TV, it’s…Playstation? An app for HBO Now, HBO‘s à la carte SVOD service, just became available on Sony’s Playstation 3 and Playstation 4. On top of that, both HBO and HBO’s Cinemax have debuted on Playstation Vue, Sony’s internet-based TV service. Playstation Vue is also debuting the new "Ultra" plan, which includes HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, and more than 100 other cable channels. It costs $65 monthly — or $75 for those who live in a major metro market where Sony also offers local broadcast TV access. Vue subscribers will have to pay $15 per month for a standalone version of either HBO and/or Cinemax as standalones.

Nielsen is rolling out digital content ratings starting today. It makes available the daily measurement of audience across digital sites, including text and video ratings. This information isn’t explicitly being released to the media and will only be available in full syndication for clients. However, some of it will likely come out. The new ratings are based on Nielsen’s census data platform, SDKs and Cloud API and will measure all connected devices from game consoles to Rokus to mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. Client participants include Mashable, Vice, Buzzfeed and Discovery.

LeEco is preparing to make a splash in the U.S. Formerly called LeTV, the Chinese consumer electronics giant has sent out an official invitation to journalists, announcing an October 19th launch event. Along with the invite came artist’s renderings of a phone, a TV, a car, a bike, and a VR headset. In other words, the company is likely to debut all of its major products for U.S. consumers. The news isn’t exactly shocking; LeEco had been visibly laying the groundwork to enter the U.S. market. This year, LeEco opened an HQ in San Jose; named three former Samsung execs and one former Qualcomm exec to major U.S. roles; and announced the $2 billion acquisition of U.S. electronics company Vizio.

Programmatic TV has grown in fits and starts, but Videa is trying to move the space forward. The Cox Media Group-backed supply-side platform has officially debuted. Advertisers can now use it to purchase local broadcast TV inventory the same way they might purchase a digital ad. The platform even allows buyers to buy and plan full TV schedules ahead of time. The SSP, which was beta tested in 2015, says that it’s now working with over 200 TV stations.


Facebook really, really wants users to use Facebook Live. According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, the social media giant is planning a massive ad campaign to persuade its 1.7 billion users to stream live video. The planned campaign is said to include billboards and, much more importantly, TV spots. Facebook Live initially launched in April. Since then, Facebook has urged brands and celebrities to use the product. (Actually, in many cases it’s paid them to.) But a lot of ordinary users still aren’t touching the product, or are using it very little. For Facebook, that’s a problem. For one, CEO Mark Zuckerberg has made it very clear that he’d like to see Facebook become a "video-first" company. A big reason for that push is advertising. And if Facebook Live is to become a lucrative platform for targeted interstitial video ads, first it needs eyeballs. A ton of them.


So now we have a clearer idea of why E.W. Scripps saw fit to buy the humor site Cracked. Cracked just moved a little closer to Scripps’ TV wheelhouse, launching an OTT channel for Roku devices. The new Cracked channel will feature original content, which will ultimately debut on Cracked.com and YouTube as well.


According to a survey from cg42, cord-cutting could cost pay-TV providers almost $1 billion in revenue over the next year. The survey, which contacted 1,119 U.S. customers, estimates that pay-TV providers could stand to lose $1,248 per cord-cutter each year, and that as many as 800,000 customers might become cord-cutter within the next 12 months. One other notable finding from the study: Contrary to the assertions of many analysts, the average consumer may indeed be saving money by cutting the cord. That’s because most cord-cutters tend to spend no more $15 per month on steaming services.

Vdeo marketing platform Innovid announced some new findings. According to the company’s data, interactive political and advocacy video ad campaigns earn 336 percent more engagement than traditional video ads in the same vertical. Innovid pulled its data from all the advocacy and political video ad campaigns it supported in 2015 and 2016. The campaigns ran across mobile, desktop, Facebook, Snapchat, and connected TV devices.

The brand’s Director of International Magazine Publishing, Ariel Deiaco-Lohr says, "Snapchat is now one of our key revenue drivers on social media," pointing to its focus on social issues and purpose. The Weather Company has added two new execs. Jana Friedman, previously of Twitter, has been named as VP of East Coast Ad Sales. And Tom Kersten, previously of Wanderful, has been named as VP of Partner Solutions. The Weather Company was officially acquired by IBM early this year, and has since moved to bring increasingly advanced analytics to its ad operations. "As The Weather Company continues to transform its business, the sales team is laser focused on identifying and maximizing opportunities that will increase advertising revenues," said Jeremy Steinberg, The Weather Company’s Global Head of Sales, in a statement.  "Jana and Tom’s strong backgrounds in global and national sales will be critical as we continue to create innovative data-driven solutions for marketers."
