The National Women’s Hockey League is getting a name change and refreshed logo ahead of the 2021-22 season, transforming into the Premier Hockey Federation, and – according to the league – marking the first professional women’s sports league in North America to lift the word ‘women’s out of its title. The new season begins on Nov. 6.

“The Premier Hockey Federation is home to some of the best professional athletes in the world who deserve to be recognized for their abilities and to be empowered as equals in sport,” said PHF Commissioner Tyler Tumminia. “This league has come a long way since its inception in 2015 and we believe that this is the right time and the right message as we strengthen our commitment to growing the game and inspiring youth.”

PROGRAMMING

College football week one kicked off with a roar across multiple channels. ABC saw its Sunday battle between Notre Dame and Florida State average 7.1 million viewers, and peaking with 8.8 million. That ranks as the second most-viewed Opening Week Sunday game ever, and up 29% over 2019. On Saturday, the ESPN family saw Georgia/Clemson average nearly 8 million viewers, according to Nielsen Fast Nationals, up 16% from 2019’’s comparable window, while Alabama/Miami was up 8% with 5.025 million viewers.

Around the dial, FOX notched its most-watched Week 1 college football game of all time with Ohio State/Minnesota. The game averaged 6.295 million viewers for the channel, also marking the most-watched Week 1 Thursday college football game of all time on any network.

ESPN announced that Drake will work with ESPN throughout the entire NFL season to curate music for select Monday Night Football games. The music will be a blend of Drake’s recent releases, along with some potential classics, as well as new music from other artists he identifies; all of which will run in Monday Night Football promotional spots, live telecasts and pre-game shows for ten games this season, starting this week.

NBA TV will exclusively carry the 2021 Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame enshrinement ceremony from Springfield, Mass., on Saturday at 7p. The network’s coverage will begin with a one-hour 2021 Hall of Fame Red Carpet Show at 6p, hosted by Matt Winer alongside Kristen Ledlow, Steve Smith and Stephanie Ready. The network will also provide coverage of the 2021 Hall of Fame Tip Off Celebration and Awards Show on Friday at 9p. The annual event recognizes the recipients of the John W. Bunn Lifetime Achievement Award (Carole Stiff), the Curt Gowdy Media Award (Mike Gorman, Mel Greenberg and George Kalinsky) and the Mannie Jackson – Basketball’s Human Spirit Award (Ray Allen, Vinny Del Negro and Renee Montgomery).

Meanwhile, with 34 Hall of Fame members expected to attend, MLB Network will exclusively televise the National Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, featuring 2020 members Derek Jeter, Ted Simmons, Larry Walker and the late Marvin Miller, today. Discovery Sports reached an agreement with Tennis Australia to serve up the Australian Open live and exclusively on a pan-European basis through to 2031. The ten-year deal includes all linear and digital rights and will extend Eurosport’s association with the first Grand Slam on the tennis calendar to more than 25 years having broadcast its first Australian Open in 1995. Discovery will also collaborate with Tennis Australia on a wide range of lifestyle and entertainment content to “tell more of the rich stories from the tournament and go beyond the sport alone.”

The 2021 League of Legends World Championship will reportedly run from Oct. 5-Nov. 6 in Reykjavík, Iceland, at the Laugardalshöll Indoor Sporting Arena, per Dot Esports. The event will be broken down into five stages, with the play-in stage taking place from Oct. 5-9 with the group stage running from Oct. 11-18. The playoffs will begin with the quarterfinals on Oct. 22-25, semifinals on Oct. 30-31, and finals on Nov. 6. No crowd will be allowed to attend.
