ROS: ROS, or Run of Site, refers to the scheduling of Internet advertising whereby ads from an advertiser run across an entire site. ROS ads are often sold at a lower rate to the advertiser than if ads had been purchased for specific site sub-sections.

Instagram’s new Stories feature took, shall we say, some inspiration from Snapchat. Instagram’s move served to demonstrate that there’s very little that’s proprietary about certain social media features – and Apple seems to have noticed. According to a report from Bloomberg, the company is looking to launch a new social media app that takes cues from both Instagram and Snapchat. Still in the early planning stages, the app would allow users to easily shoot and edit short videos. Apple may be a massive tech behemoth, but it’s actually lagged a bit when it comes to integrating its own social networking applications into its mobile devices. Still, Bloomberg cautions that it’s still possible for Apple to abandon the project at some point, especially if the company determines that such an app runs the risk of exposing consumer data.
YouTube is working on a new social networking service as well, according to VentureBeat. Called Backstage, the service would enable users to share videos, photos, text posts, links, and polls with their subs. VentureBeat reports that the service is slated to launch by the end of 2016 – possibly as early as this fall – on both mobile and desktop. At launch, the service will be available only to a select number of popular accounts, and with limited features.
Tru Optik, an audience measurement and data management platform built for OTT, announced a new audience data offering. Tru Optik’s new OTT Data Cloud is designed to give advertisers the ability to measure and buy OTT ads, similar to the way they would buy other digital media advertising. The platform provides access to behavioral, demographic and purchase data through partnerships with Experian Marketing Services, Media Source Solutions, Cross Pixel, Target Smart, and V12 Group. The OTT Data Cloud will be available through the company’s Data Management Platform (DMP).

VIRTUAL + AUGMENTED REALITY
President Barack Obama just became the first sitting president to appear in a VR video. (Be honest: Can you imagine Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump doing anything like this?) Titled Through the Ages, the video features Obama’s visit to Yosemite. The experience was released yesterday, August 25th – which happened to be the 100th birthday of the U.S. National Park Service. The video was produced by VR company Felix & Paul, in collaboration with National Geographic, Oculus and, of course, the White House. It’s available on the Samsung Gear VR headset, and will debut for the Oculus Rift headset soon. You can also check out part of the video on National Geographic’s Facebook page.
Gears of War producer Tanya Watson and Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland have teamed up to launch Squanchtendo, a new VR gaming developer. (“Squanchtendo” is a Rick and Morty reference, by the way, and a funny one.) The company hasn’t announced any active projects just yet; it’s aiming for gaming experiences featuring what it calls “refined” gameplay and “edgy” comedy.

The social broadcasting app Live.me recently launched Beam, a new feature allowing online broadcasters to invite fans into their broadcast and share the screen with another member of the Live.me community. (Beam is available immediately for starred or verified Live.me users.) The feature, available for both iOS and Android, launched in conjunction with Live.me’s sponsorship of Girls Night In. Girls Night In, a month-long tour put on by Fullscreen Live (Fullscreen Media’s touring and events division), features female YouTube stars including Jessie Page and Alyson Stoner. The tour features performances, musical sets, and meet-and-greets. The stars of the tour, which runs until September 18, are using Live.me to reach out to fans.
Facebook Live co-creator and Product Manager Vadim Lavrusik has departed the company, launching his own streaming app. Called Alively, the new service is designed to let users share live video with only a select number of people, as opposed to an entire social network. The app launched for iOS this week.
Amazon is producing it first original South Korean series. The [email protected], a K-pop infused drama series based on the Japanese Idolm@ster video game series, centers on a group of girls who embark on a career in the entertainment industry. The series will debut exclusively on Amazon Prime Video early next year. It’ll be localized into a number of languages, including English and Japanese.
And more from Amazon Prime Video: The service has acquired exclusive U.S. rights for The Kettering Incident, an Australian drama series from BBC Worldwide. The series will make its Amazon debut on September 30.
