User-Generated Content: User-generated content refers to content, such as photos, videos, articles, or quotes, that’s created by consumers. Online marketers frequently ask consumers to create user-generated content, which is then used to support an ad campaign. User-generated might include product testimonials, or videos of a consumer using a product.
Redbox parent Outerwall, now publicly traded, will be taken private by hedge fund Apollo Capital Management for $1.6 billion. If all goes well, it could be privatized by the end of the third quarter. The announcement is seen as another sign that streaming is pretty much killing off the Age of DVDs. Outerwall owns more than 40,200 movie rental kiosks, which saw a 20% drop in DVD rentals in the first quarter to 137.7 million.
Warner Bros. has filed a copyright claim with Google against a subreddit, r/BestOfStreamingVideo, which has aggregated free, pirated movies, to remove it from search results. Google has denied the request. Warner Bros. filed 23 other claims as well, including one for a subreddit that linked to 2014’s Interstellar, starring Anne Hathaway and Matthew McConaughey.
NBC Olympics has selected Microsoft Azure to provide live and on-demand streaming for its production of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. Azure will provide cloud encoding and hosting with video workflows for NBC Olympics’ production of the Games that kick off Aug. 5 and run through Aug. 21. These Games will feature 4,500 hours of online content.
Pennsylvania’s 6 percent state sales tax started to be applied to digital downloads and streaming subscription services on Monday. The state’s hope is that the new revenue will help fill up the $1.3 billion shortfall in the state’s current budget.

Five million Google Chromecasts have been sold in the last two months, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said during Alphabet’s quarterly earnings announcement. Google’s streaming media dongle has now sold nearly 30 million units since it launched in 2013.

National Geographic Channel will produce its first virtual reality documentary short film. Entitled The Protectors, the film will focus on the rangers protecting African elephants from ivory poachers, who kill more than 30,000 of the animals each year. Academy Award-winning director Kathryn Bigelow and VR creator Imraan Esmail will co-create the 12-minute VR film in partnership with Here Be Dragons and Megan Ellison‘s Annapurna Pictures.
A bank syndicate made up of BNPP, Bank of China, HSBC, Banque Palatine and BPI has raised $47 million for video advertising platform Teads, which specializes in outstream ads. The money will be used “to acquire ad tech companies in possession of technology that will consolidate” Teads’ spot in the industry, according to TechCrunch. The last round of financing for Teads, which says it’s been profitable for the last four years, was back in January of last year and brought in $30 million.
Poor viewer experience is hurting the effectiveness of video ads. “A slow video upload due to buffering raises the heart rate by more than 30%” – which, according to AdEchanger.com, “is similar to how one reacts when watching a horror movie.” Not what advertisers are generally going for. The majority of desktop users and more than 40% of mobile users say the viewing experience of ads are acceptable to poor.
Netflix went down in a handful of countries this past Saturday for three hours as a result of people using the service’s web player. The blackout occurred across international borders with viewers in Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Switzerland, and New Zealand all having the same issue, according to Digital Trends. Other countries, such as Argentina and Norway, appeared to be having similar problems.
More college students will be able to watch NFL games this year. DirecTV allowed students at four-year colleges to stream out-of-market games last year without a satellite dish. Now the company is expanding that to two-year colleges as well. On top of that, NFL Sunday Ticket is coming to Apple TV’s set-top box and will include the Red Zone Channel.
The ListenFirst Television Interest (TVI) Rating (TM) is a standardized measurement of the most buzzed-about TV programs on linear TV and streaming services. A complement to ListenFirst’s other syndicated data products (such as the ListenFirst Digital Audience Rating – TV), the metrics included in the rating are the purest form of showing interest digitally, since they’re organic actions that are largely unaffected by paid media. Programs that surface on the TVI leaderboards are the most hashtagged on Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr, as well as most searched for on Wikipedia (used as a proxy for organic search volume).

Converged TV and video advertising provider Videology has released its second-quarter U.S. Video-At-A-Glance report. It shows that the growth in programmatic TV capabilities is driving more marketers to embrace solutions that go beyond age and gender to find linear TV programs, networks or dayparts that index highest for their strategic audience. Quarter-over-quarter spending on linear TV campaigns in the Videology Platform increased by 50% from the fourth quarter of 2015 to first quarter 2016, and by 74% from first quarter 2016 to second quarter 2016. Other data from the report is below:
-14% of digital video campaigns that ran Videology’s platform in Q2 2016 used TV data segments such as their TV schedule, a competitor’s TV schedule, or viewers of news programming, to target their digital video campaigns.
-Advertisers embraced data sources such as demographic data (100%), geographic data (68%) and consumer behavior attributes (63%).
-Of all campaigns that ran in Q2, 43% of them used viewable rate as an objective key performance indicator. Of those campaigns, 89% chose to measure viewability using the MRC standard (50% of pixels on screen for at least two consecutive seconds) while an additional 11% chose to use their own custom standard for determining if an ad was viewable.
