07/18/16: Cynopsis Digital looks at digital campaign advertising; T-Mobile offers year of Pokemon Go data; AT&T aims to use drones for LTE coverage


Good morning. It’s Monday July 18, 2016, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.


The Optimizer: The Optimizer was a targeted advertising tool created and used by Barack Obama’s 2012 campaign for reelection. In addition to using Nielsen Media Research data, the Optimizer ingested data from voters the campaign had come in contact with. The campaign then took that data, as well as publicly available data about registered voters, and cross-referenced it against Rentrak set-top box data. With Rentrak’s help, the campaign’s advertising then targeted programs that voters – particularly persuadable voters – were frequenting.


The next phase of Decision 2016 kicks of tonight with Day One of the Republican National Convention. It’s an historic election for many reasons. For one thing, campaigns are using digital advertising and data in unprecedented ways (in addition to the above item about the optimizer). Cynopsis Digital spoke with Google, CNN, AOL, Fusion and others to get a detailed lay of the land. Check out our new piece here.
Starting tomorrow, July 19, T-Mobile will offer a full year of free data for Pokemon Go gameplay. The offer is available as part of T-Mobile’s Tuesday free rewards promotion, and can be claimed in T-Mobile’s special rewards app. Anyone who claims the reward will be able to play Pokemon Go without eating into their monthly data plan. The free data allowance will last through the end of August 2017.


Very intriguing. John Hanke, the CEO of Pokemon Go-developer Niantic, recently told the Financial Times that Niantic will soon offer sponsored in-game locations to advertisers. Hanke didn’t provide much additional detail. Whenever these sponsorships roll out, you’d better believe people will be paying close attention to how they perform: They’ll give us a very good idea of just how successfully augmented reality gaming can be monetized through advertising partnerships.

Looks like Google will be sticking to mobile-based VR. According to a report from Re/code, Google has curtailed efforts to develop a high-end virtual reality headset to compete with devices like the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift. (Google never officially confirmed those plans in the first place, though they were reported.) Instead, Google will continue putting its resources toward Daydream, its in-development mobile-based virtual reality platform.

This fall, TV network INSP will debut State Plate, a new culinary travel series series hosted by American Idol winner Taylor Hicks. This past Saturday, in advance of the series, Hicks took part in a Facebook Live chat on INSP’s Facebook page. During the live-stream, Hicks announced the premiere date of State Plate, as well as a new VIP Sweepstakes Package (one INSP viewer will have the chance to win a trip for two to Hicks’ October 29th concert in Memphis, TN). State Plate debuts on INSP Friday, October 21.


In a blog post, AT&T Chief Strategy Officer John Donovan wrote that, in the future, the telco aims to use drones to temporarily boost LTE networks. The initiative is to be geared toward concerts and other events attended by large groups of people. Donovan also announced that AT&T has launched a new national drone program, designed to focus on various drone-based solutions.


In its Global State of Play report for video, Google took a look at the state of ad viewability across the industry. The company found that viewability has improved; 66% of video ads are now viewable across the web and apps (excluding YouTube), and across desktop, tablets, and smartphones. (Google proudly says that about 93% of ads are viewable on YouTube.) The 2016 viewability rate for desktop sits at about 64%; for smartphones, it’s 73%; and for tablets, 81%. Google says that for YouTube, the numbers are, respectively, 87%, 95%, and 95%.
