Good morning. It’s Tuesday June 27, 2017 and this is your your first early morning Digital briefing!

TODAY’S CODEBREAKER

Pulse-Code Modulation: PCM is a method used to digitally represent sampled analog signals. It is the standard form of digital audio in computers, compact discs, digital telephony and other digital audio applications.

JUST IN

Dish Network and its Sling OTT service are wading deeper into selling ad inventory via programmatic auctions, enabling it to sell some addressable ad impressions to advertisers for live, linear and on-demand programming. In addition, some on-demand ads delivered to Dish Network viewers on digital devices can also be included in some of the auctions.

Facebook has been making the rounds in Hollywood seeking scripted TV programming that would appeal to viewers ages 13-34, according to The Wall Street Journal. The social behemoth apparently wants to secure programming that avoids politics, news, nudity and rough language. The Journal cites sources as saying that in meetings with the likes of Creative Artists Agency, United Talent Agency, William Morris Endeavor and ICM Partners, Facebook has indicated it is willing to commit to production budgets as high as $3 million per episode.

Video-streaming service Vimeo, which had been planning to launch a subscription VOD service, is changing course. “Vimeo has confirmed that it has decided not to proceed in offering an subscription based original program service scheduled to begin in ’18,” said the company in a statement. On June 16, Apple muscled into the content space with the high profile hires of Sony Pictures Television execs Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg to lead video programming.

ABC Talent and Casting’s ABC Discovers: Digital Competition is live now through Sunday, July 9. Actors 18 and over have a shot at a $25,000 talent deal; finalists’ videos will be featured on the ABC Discovers website. This year, ABC is also launching the competition as a separate contest in the UK.

Raze, the Latino-focused media company formed in January by Modern Family star Sofia Vergara, has launched a mobile-first digital portal. The Raze platform is available at raze.tv and geared toward cord-cutting or cord-never Latino millennials.

APPS

A rash of scandalous bad news doesn’t seem to be making a dent in ride-hailing app Uber, according to data provided to ADWEEK by App Annie. Uber gained 50 million downloads worldwide in the first quarter of 2017, compared to 5.2 million for competitor Lyft and Gett’s 1.3 million. The 50 million downloads for Uber were twice the number as in the first quarter of 2016. In the U.S., Lyft’s downloads totaled 1.5 million in May compared to 2.6 million for Uber. This compares with 1 million and 2.3 million, respectively, in May of 2016.

RESEARCH

An analysis by M Science shows that subscribers to Hulu are more likely to be cord cutters, that is getting rid of pay-TV packages. M Science found that Netflix customers on average spend about $1 less per month for cable service. But Hulu subscribers pay $10 to $15 per month less for cable bundles than the average consumer, suggesting that “cord-replacement or displacement is relatively high among subscribers to Hulu’s legacy SVOD service, which is estimated to have between 12 million and 15 million subscribers currently.”

It’s the “low and slow” bots that are most difficult to detect on websites. This according to the ninth annual study from Distil Networks, which evaluated the top 1,000 sites in seven categories. Where detection falls short is in all categories for sophisticated bots, defined as “low and slow” that come from dozens of IP addresses using browser automation tools. The chances of detecting and stopping them is between 1% and 7%. When analyzing consumer sites, crude bots were found on nearly 70% of them compared to 77% for federal sites, 59% for news sites and 75% for ISP Hosts.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

The metric includes total volume of official hashtag mentions on FacebookTwitterGoogle+, and Tumblr, along with Wikipedia page views (as a proxy for organic search volume) for a show as a percentage of the total volume of the same activities for all shows.
