The Arsenio Hall Show will not make it to a sophomore season, despite a renewal by CBS Television Distribution in February. "While there are many loyal fans of the show, the series did not grow its audience enough to continue," said a statement from CBSTVD. "When I started this adventure… we all knew it would be a challenge," said Hall. "I’m gratified for the year we’ve had."

IN THE NEWS

Groovy! The premiere of CNN‘s The Sixties on Thursday at 9p averaged 284,000 in the A25-54 demo, enough to slide past Fox News (273,000) and clobber MSNBC (115,000), according to Nielsen fast nationals. In total viewers, The Sixties (1.4 million) was second, after Fox News (1.9 million); MSNBC drew 723,000. "Today we have seen the true scope of what CNN can be," wrote Jeff Zucker, president of CNN Worldwide, in a memo to staff on Friday.

Discovery Communications completed its acquisition of a controlling interest in sports entertainment group Eurosport International, to 51 percent from 20 percent. "By combining Eurosport’s popular sports programming with Discovery’s global brands and local expertise," said Discovery president and CEO David Zaslav, "we will continue to capitalize on the international growth of pay-TV and create long-term value for our shareholders."

Esquire is now live streaming its programming on new mobile app, Esquire TV Now, as well as at http://tv.esquire.com/now/. "We know that Esquire Network’s audience are early adopters who consume entertainment content," said net president Adam Stotsky, citing the need to make content "as easy and convenient as possible" to access. On demand access to current series is available as soon as the day after air.

The Casting Society of America is moving the date of its annual awards presentation from November to the heart of awards season, January 22, 2015. "The recognition of the craft and art of casting has taken a major step forward with the recent establishment of the Casting Directors Branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences," said Richard Hicks, president of the Casting Society of America. "We moved the 30th Annual Artios Awards later in the season to better align Casting with film’s other major guilds and crafts."

BRANDS & ADVERTISING

The National Association of Broadcasters is challenging an FCC restriction, put in effect in March, that effectively bans advertising sales resource-sharing deals between broadcasters. "NAB believes that a fact-based examination of today’s marketplace would show that FCC ownership restrictions against free and local broadcasters are outdated in a world of national pay-TV giants," said NAB spokesman Dennis Wharton.

Advertisers spent $12 billion to reach viewers watching dramas last year, the most spent among all TV genres, according to Nielsen’s latest Advertising and Audiences report. General news ($9 billion) was next, followed by sitcoms ($6 billion). The measurement company reported dramas account for 37 percent of content across broadcast and cable, with sports coming in second at 31 percent of primetime programming.
