The Arsenio Hall Show will not make it to a sophomore season, despite a renewal by CBS Television Distribution in February. "While there are many loyal fans of the show, the series did not grow its audience enough to continue," said a statement from CBSTVD. "When I started this adventure… we all knew it would be a challenge," said Hall. "I’m gratified for the year we’ve had."
Groovy! The premiere of CNN‘s The Sixties on Thursday at 9p averaged 284,000 in the A25-54 demo, enough to slide past Fox News (273,000) and clobber MSNBC (115,000), according to Nielsen fast nationals. In total viewers, The Sixties (1.4 million) was second, after Fox News (1.9 million); MSNBC drew 723,000. "Today we have seen the true scope of what CNN can be," wrote Jeff Zucker, president of CNN Worldwide, in a memo to staff on Friday.
Discovery Communications completed its acquisition of a controlling interest in sports entertainment group Eurosport International, to 51 percent from 20 percent. "By combining Eurosport’s popular sports programming with Discovery’s global brands and local expertise," said Discovery president and CEO David Zaslav, "we will continue to capitalize on the international growth of pay-TV and create long-term value for our shareholders."
Esquire is now live streaming its programming on new mobile app, Esquire TV Now, as well as at http://tv.esquire.com/now/. "We know that Esquire Network’s audience are early adopters who consume entertainment content," said net president Adam Stotsky, citing the need to make content "as easy and convenient as possible" to access. On demand access to current series is available as soon as the day after air.
The Casting Society of America is moving the date of its annual awards presentation from November to the heart of awards season, January 22, 2015. "The recognition of the craft and art of casting has taken a major step forward with the recent establishment of the Casting Directors Branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences," said Richard Hicks, president of the Casting Society of America. "We moved the 30th Annual Artios Awards later in the season to better align Casting with film’s other major guilds and crafts."

The National Association of Broadcasters is challenging an FCC restriction, put in effect in March, that effectively bans advertising sales resource-sharing deals between broadcasters. "NAB believes that a fact-based examination of today’s marketplace would show that FCC ownership restrictions against free and local broadcasters are outdated in a world of national pay-TV giants," said NAB spokesman Dennis Wharton.
Advertisers spent $12 billion to reach viewers watching dramas last year, the most spent among all TV genres, according to Nielsen’s latest Advertising and Audiences report. General news ($9 billion) was next, followed by sitcoms ($6 billion). The measurement company reported dramas account for 37 percent of content across broadcast and cable, with sports coming in second at 31 percent of primetime programming.

ID is ensuring June has no shortage of mayhem. Back-to-back eps of crime docuseries Cry Wolfe debuts Tuesday, June 3 at 10p, following the season two premiere of Swamp Murders. Freshman season of Suburban Secrets starts Friday, June 13 at 9p and 9:30p, followed the next day by Devil in the Details at 10p. Season two of Southern Fried Homicide bows Thursday, June 19 at 10p.
E!‘s Keeping Up with the Kardashians returns Sunday, June 8 at 9p for season nine, followed by the series premiere of real-life soap Escape Club at 10p. Plastic surgery show Botched bows Tuesday, June 24 at 9p, with #Rich Kids of Beverly Hills heading back for season two in August.

The Thursday premiere of NBC‘s Undateable at 9p and 9:30p earned a 1.3/4 rating among A18-49, outscoring fellow originals Gang Related, on Fox at 9p (1.0/3) and ABC‘s Black Box at 10p (.8/2). Good sign: The comedy held onto its audience for its second ep.
ABC News finished the May sweep number one in the A25-54 news demo with World News, Good Morning America (also tops in total viewers) and This Week (the first sweep win in the demo in over 20 years). Nightline won in total viewers, beating NBC in a sweep for the first time.
NBC‘s Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon was up 34 percent among A18-49 versus last year’s May sweep, averaging 1.1. ABC‘s Jimmy Kimmel Live averaged .6 (down 5 percent), and Late Show with David Letterman scored .5 in the demo (down 13 percent). In total viewers, Kimmel got the biggest boost, up 8 percent to 2.7 million.
AMC‘s Mad Men leaped 87 percent from Live+Same Day viewership of 1.9 million for its mid-season finale, to 3.6 million in Live + 3. Among A18-49, the jump was a whopping 116 percent, to 1.84 million viewers.
CBS‘s daytime shows all finished the season boasting year-to-year growth, with the best season in viewers ever for Let’s Make a Deal 1, up 13 percent to 3.03 million, Let’s Make a Deal 2, up 12 percent to 3.5 million and The Talk, up 16 percent to 2.78 million.
The premiere of NBC pirate drama Crossbones earned a 1.1 rating among A18-49 Friday night and almost 5 million total viewers, according to early numbers. That’s the same rating Hannibal hit in its February premiere.
Tuesday’s 19 Kids & Counting on TLC scored its highest ratings ever, with series best HH (2.2), W25-54 (2.1), P25-54 (1.3) and P2+ delivery (2.8 million viewers). TLC was the number one cable net for the night among W25-54.
Bravo had its most-watched May ever, averaging 858,000 total viewers, according to Nielsen. Year-to-date, Bravo is the number 9 ad-supported cable entertainment net among P18-49, and the number one most affluent and educated in the demo.
The second season premiere of Telemundo‘s El Senor de los Cielos averaged 2.2 million total viewers and 1.4 million A18-49. It’s the first time the net aired a telenovela for more than one season.
