Oregon’s attorney general and state treasurer are investigating Fox Corp.’s board of directors, saying they believe the directors breached their fiduciary duties by allowing Fox News to broadcast false claims about the 2020 election. Those claims led to a payment of $787.5 million to settle a lawsuit with Dominion Voting Systems. The Oregon Public Employees Retirement owns more than 250,000 shares of stock in Fox.

Animated series “Angry Birds Mystery Island,” from Eric Rogers (“Futurama”) and Titmouse, will air on Prime Video and Amazon Kids+. “The Angry Birds captivated people of all ages and became a global phenomenon with the debut of their first game, and their cultural presence has remained steadfast,” says Melissa Wolfe, Head of Animation, Amazon Studios. “We are excited by the opportunity to expand the Hatchlings’ world into a family series for our global customers to enjoy even more stories around these beloved birds.”

TECH TALK
Just a matter of time: The first Snoopy face for Apple Watch is coming with watchOS 10, available to Apple Watch users this fall. The watch face features Snoopy, Woodstock, and themes based on the Peanuts comic strip. More than 140 Peanuts animations have been created by WildBrain Studios in partnership with Charles Schulz Creative Associates and the Apple design team. The characters interact and play with the watch hands, react to the weather conditions in the area, and get active when the user does a workout.
The Association of National Advertisers released an updated version of its media agency contract agreement – created in 2016 and last updated in 2018 – to address “key developments in the media-buying industry over the past five years.” Changes include a clause requiring an agency to obtain an advertiser’s consent before utilizing any artificial intelligence applications in the delivery of its services, and clarifications on compliance audits and performance audits, non-transparent services, and ESG and DEI. “For most companies, advertising spending is their second or third largest expense after employees and real estate costs,” said ANA CEO Bob Liodice. “An advertiser’s contract with its media agency must be detailed and precise given the amount of media flowing through the agency and the complexity of the media ecosystem. This revised and updated template will help advertisers achieve that goal.”
All ads served through Microsoft Advertising will come from verified advertisers only starting August 1. The Advertiser Identity Verification program was first announced in June 2022. “We want our customers to have choice and control through transparency, so in addition to making our network safer, one of the primary goals of AIV is to increase visibility to those who interact with our ads,” wrote Sarah Ralston, Senior Service Engineering Manager at Microsoft Advertising, and Sandeep Krishnan, Senior Program Manager, in a blog post. All ads will display the name and location of the advertiser, the business, or the individual who is funding the ad, as well as information about why they are seeing an ad, such as targeting parameters.

SPORTS ROUNDUP
In a surprise – to put it mildly – move, the PGA Tour and upstart LIV Golf are merging business operations. “The parties have signed an agreement that combines PIF’s golf-related commercial businesses and rights (including LIV Golf) with the commercial businesses and rights of the PGA Tour and DP World Tour into a new, collectively owned, for-profit entity,” said the entities in a joint statement. Launched in June 2022 by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, the LIV Golf series has engendered ill will and legal disputes in the sport, but “after two years of disruption and distraction, this is a historic day for the game we all know and love,” said PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan. Fans weren’t the only ones shocked by the deal. “I love finding out morning news on Twitter,” grumble-posted pro Collin Morikawa.
As for legal unpleasantness, the merger will lead to “a mutually agreed end to all pending litigation between the participating parties.” Last summer, a number of golfers who joined the LIV tour filed an antitrust lawsuit against the PGA Tour, challenging their suspensions. The new deal calls for the PGA Tour, LIV Golf and the DP World Tour to “work cooperatively and in good faith to establish a fair and objective process” to allow players who left the PGA Tour and DP tour to re-apply for membership.
Speaking on CNBC, Al-Rumayyan, the governor of the Public Investment Fund, said the PIF would spend “billions of dollars” on the sport. “We will be investing in the game of golf and doing many new things that I think will have better engagement from the players, the fans, the broadcasters, the sponsors, everyone else,” said Al-Rumayyan.
So where does all this leave The CW, whose parent company Nexstar signed a multi-year broadcast deal with LIV Golf in January? “There is no change to the LIV Golf event schedule for 2023 on The CW,” said a Nexstar spokesperson. “We look forward to broadcasting seven more exciting tournaments this year featuring the world’s best golfers.” Disney/ESPN, NBCU and Paramount/CBS have broadcast rights with the PGA through 2030.
SponsorUnited released its NHL Marketing Partnerships Report 2022-23. Key findings include:
· Stanley Cup Finals teams have over 20% more sponsorships than the average NHL team. The Vegas Golden Knights and Florida Panthers have expanded their sponsorship deals at an average rate of 4.5 over the last year, compared to the league average of 2.5.
· The NHL witnessed 21% YoY growth in sponsorship revenue reaching $1.28B, outpacing all other major professional sports leagues, including the NFL (14%). Team sponsorship revenue in the Media sector grew 108%, followed by Sports Betting & Fantasy and Financial with 66% and 34% growth, respectively, while Auto and Business Services both rose 25%.
· Digitally Enhanced Dasherboards (DEDs) are changing the sponsorship landscape. The Auto category is the most represented sector among DEDs, accounting for 15% of all brands and 21% of all purchased assets, followed by Bev-Alc and Finance.
“The NHL took a bold, multi-pronged approach to revolutionize sponsorships, and it paid off with a 21% lift in team revenues year-over-year, out-performing industry expectations,” said Bob Lynch, SponsorUnited Founder and CEO. “Their big bet to introduce DEDs is one of the first great examples in sports marketing of how AI is changing how brands interact with consumers. Over 700 brands activated a DED in just the first season, and we’re seeing some teams generating as much as 25% more revenue in dashboard signage alone.”
For the Stanley Cup Final, NHL Blast is introducing 3D goal re-creations on Roblox for every goal scored during the Final created from NHL EDGE data. “The introduction of 3D goal re-creations in NHL Blast furthers our commitment to use innovation to engage with new and existing fans – especially during our biggest event of the year, the Stanley Cup Final,” said David Lehanski, NHL EVP, Business Development and Innovation. “After years of investing in NHL EDGE technology, we are continuing to uncover ways in which the data can create entirely new fan experiences for younger audiences and showcase elements of our great game in entertaining ways.”
