Video Player-Ad Interface Definition: Video player-ad interface definition, or VPAID, is the protocol between an ad and the video player required to enable ad interactivity and other advanced video functionality. VPAID offers two-way communication between an ad and a video player, allowing for formats such as non-linear video ads and interactive linear video ads.

The Ringer is joining Vox Media – kind of. The sports and culture site, launched by Bill Simmons last year, has been hosted on the online publishing platform Medium since its inception. But under a new pact, The Ringer will now be hosted by Vox’s network, and Vox will sell ads for the site and its properties. Still, The Ringer will remain editorially independent. Vox distinguishes between adding a site to its “advertising and technology platform” – what it’s doing with The Ringer – and officially adding a site to its corporate family of sites, which is not the case here.

Google is giving brands and agencies a closer look at how their YouTube ads are influencing consumers. As part of an expansion to its “store visits” service, Google will now track how often a YouTube ad impression directly leads to a trip to the advertiser’s store. The service, initially launched in 2014 to measure the impact of search ads, tracks store visits based on users’ proximity to an advertiser’s location on Google Maps. Since 2014, Google says it’s logged over five billion store visits.
 
Ad tech verification specialists Integral Ad Science and DoubleVerify announced a new partnership with Snap Inc. The two companies will work with Snap to offer brand-safety controls to advertisers. Dubbed the Snapchat Brand Safety Protocol, the new initiative is designed to block ads from appearing next to inappropriate user-generated content. Snapchat had pre-existing relationships with IAS and DoubleVerify, along with the 3rd-party measurement specialist Moat, the three of which were already helping brands to measure Snapchat ad campaigns. The new brand safety initiative will also see the companies establish and join a council – called the Brand Safety Coalition – which will regularly meet to discuss best practices and Snap policies.
 
Ad-buying software provider Centro announced that it has created a new private marketplace (PMP) directory. Available through the Centro DSP demand-side platform, Centro says that the directory consists of over 1,000 curated deals from over 150 publishers. Access to the directory is exclusive to Centro’s customers.
 
 
PROGRAMMING + CONTENT ACQUISITIONS
 
You can’t exactly make a foray into original content if you don’t have any content. Fortunately for Apple, Carpool Karaoke: The Series finally has a release date. Along with upcoming reality series Planet of the Apps, Carpool Karaoke series – a spinoff of the well-known segment from The Late Late Show with James Corden – represents one of Apple’s first efforts to create its own programming. The series is slated to debut on Apple Music (subscription price: $9.99 per month) on August 8. The tech giant had originally predicted that the series would debut in April.
 
 
SOCIAL MEDIA
 
Influencer whitelists appear to be on the rise. Spurred on by growing brand safety concerns, brands and agencies have been creating lists of preapproved influencers with reputations for credibility and reliable past behavior, notes a new story from Digiday. The goal for most marketers is to make sure their brands don’t wind up juxtaposed to things like politically slanted posts or pornographic content – though some marketers are using whitelists to pinpoint influencers who’ve never before worked with other brands in the same field.
 
 
VIRTUAL + AUGMENTED REALITY
 
Fox Sports announced that it will offer this Saturday’s UEFA Champions League final in virtual reality. The stream will be accessible through an app for Google Cardboard viewers and Samsung VR headsets. A 360-degree video version will also be available for mobile devices.

Now that smartphones have become pretty much ubiquitous, overall media consumption trends are starting to plateau a bit. That’s one of the takeaways from Zenith’s newest data: The research firm finds that, on a global level, individuals will spend an average of 455.8 minutes consuming media this year. That’s a decline from 2016’s 456.1 minutes. Granted, the picture is a little different when you look solely at North America, where overall media consumption is projected to increase by 1.8 percent this year, reaching 612.4 minutes per day. Jonathan Barnard, Zenith’s Head of Forecasting, says that mobile internet is what’s driving up overall media consumption: Mobile internet consumption increased, on average, by 44 percent between 2010 and 2016. And while that growth is continuing, it’s slowing. As of last year, mobile accounted for 19 percent of all global media consumption. Zenith expects that number to be 26 percent by 2019.
 
The ListenFirst Television Interest (TVI) Rating (TM) is a standardized measurement of the most buzzed-about TV programs on linear TV and streaming services. A complement to ListenFirst’s other syndicated data products (such as the ListenFirstDigital Audience Rating – TV), the metrics included in the rating capture organic actions that are largely unaffected by paid media. Programs that surface on the TVI leaderboards are the most hashtagged on FacebookTwitterGoogle+, and Tumblr, as well as most searched for on Wikipedia (used as a proxy for organic search volume).

Music streaming service SoundCloud is losing Stephen Bryan, its Chief Content Officer. The company announced that he’d be leaving by the end of May. Bryan had been at SoundCloud for three years, overseeing the company’s publishing and record label deals. SoundCloud has already lost three other major execs this year, including COO Marc Strigel, Finance Director Markus Harder, and General Counsel Neil Miller.
